Sustainable Farming Scheme 'cautiously' welcomed by Coed Cadw
The SFS marks a shift in the way land management for public goods is supported in Wales.
Coed Cadw has welcomed the collaborative approach taken during its development but feels more work is needed to fully realise the scheme's potential.
Kylie Jones Mattock, director at Coed Cadw said: 'We welcome the recognition by the Welsh Government that sustainable land management delivers vital public goods - such as clean air and water, carbon storage, and cultural and community wellbeing.
"Framing these outcomes as a 'social benefit' payment is important, as it reflects the interconnected value of land, people, and place."

Castell Coffi known for Welsh cakes nominated for award
Castell Coffi, owned by Ian and Leigh Crawford, in Caldicot, has been nominated for the Best of Welsh Business Awards in the South East Wales section. The ceremony will take place at Maes Manor, in Blackwood, on September 7, and customers can vote for their favourite. Owner Ian Crawford said: "Well, it's about time these Welsh cakes won something! "Please vote on the link for us if you have a minute. "We have plans to brand our Welsh cakes as people are going nuts over them. "I always knew my mother's recipe would be popular but they sell out every day and there are times during the day when people are buying them in advance because I can't cook them fast enough." Castell Coffi, situated in Caldicot Business Park, has gained fame for its homemade Welsh cakes made from a family recipe. Since opening earlier this year, the shop has attracted customers from across the country. It has also become a "celebrity hotspot", with renowned visitors such as actor and director Mackenzie Crook and comedian Omid Djalili. The shop was recently voted the best coffee shop in Gwent on TripAdvisor. It is open on weekdays from 9am to 4pm, serving coffee, homemade Welsh cakes, toasties, paninis, fresh sandwiches, and cakes. One reviewer said: "Fabulous coffee shop catering largely for local workers. "Really friendly staff, great coffee, but omg, those Welsh cakes. "Heavenly."

Minister insists fuel supplies not under threat despite oil refinery closure
An energy minister has insisted fuel supplies will not be under threat after no buyer was found for one of Britain's largest oil refineries. State Oil – the parent company of Prax Group, which owns the Lindsey refinery in North Lincolnshire – collapsed into administration last month, putting hundreds of jobs at risk. Michael Shanks pledged to support the workers who are facing redundancy, but said there is little action the Government can take to improve the statutory redundancy offer. Speaking in the Commons, he said: 'We have worked urgently to ensure the safety of the refinery site, the security of fuel supplies and to protect workers. 'This has also allowed time for bidders to express an interest in the site. 'Following a thorough process, the official receiver has rigorously assessed all the bids received and concluded that sale of the business as a whole is not a credible option.' He added: 'A package has been offered to all those directly employed at the refinery, which guarantees their jobs and pay over the coming months. 'And alongside the usual support that is offered to workforces in insolvency situations, the Government will also immediately fund a comprehensive training guarantee for those refinery workers to ensure they have the skills needed and the support to find jobs, for example, in the growing clean energy workforce.' The Lindsey site is one of only five large oil refineries remaining in the UK after the recent closure of the Grangemouth plant in Scotland. Prax Group is led by majority owner and chairman and chief executive Sanjeev Kumar Soosaipillai, who bought the Lindsey oil refinery from French firm Total in 2021. Shadow energy minister Andrew Bowie, who tabled the urgent question, claimed 625 jobs are at risk as he pressed the minister for an update on its investigation into the collapse of the company. He also asked: 'What, if any, assessment has been made into the UK's resilience given the steep reduction in our refining capacity over the past six months? 'What, if any, assessment has been made on the increased reliance on imports that will be necessary as a result of the reduction in British refining capacity?' Mr Shanks said fuel supplies had 'adjusted' in the past few weeks, adding: 'Our assessment suggests there isn't an immediate risk to fuel supplies locally or in the wider area, but we'll continue to monitor that.' On the investigation, he said: 'There is not much I can update the House on at the moment, because the insolvency service is carrying out that investigation.' Conservative MP Martin Vickers, whose Brigg and Immingham constituency includes the oil refinery, said he wanted to see 'the maximum support given to those workers'. Mr Shanks replied: 'We have looked and pushed and pushed to see if there is more action Government can take to change or to give any additional payments. 'It's not possible for Government to do that, not least because the insolvency service has to follow very specific rules in terms of creditors and what their parameters are to operate in the event of an insolvency. 'But I do think the owners of this company have profited from this business, and they should do the right thing by the workforce that delivered that for them.'

No 10 brushes off calls for extra bank holiday to mark Lionesses' victory
The England women's team will celebrate their victory with a visit to No 10 on Monday evening, followed by an open-top bus parade through central London on Tuesday. The Lionesses defended their Euros title in a penalty shootout win over Spain in the final in Basel, Switzerland, on Sunday. The Government had already indicated it was unlikely to heed calls for an extra bank holiday to herald England's success. On Monday, the Prime Minister's official spokesman attempted to make light of calls for the additional day off work. 'If we had a bank holiday every time the Lionesses win we'd never go to work,' he told reporters. He added: 'It is a tribute to the success of the Lionesses. The Prime Minister has said how inspiring their incredible victory was last night, and the team has captured the hearts of the nation. 'We look forward to joining the rest of the country celebrating this incredible win.' The spokesman pointed to the plans for a parade and the Downing Street reception as part of the Government's efforts to ensure the team has a warm welcome on their return to the UK. Bank holidays have a costly impact on the UK economy, and various governments have been reticent to introduce additional public holidays. Analysis by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport estimated the cost of the additional bank holiday to mark Elizabeth II's platinum jubilee in June 2022 was £2.4 billion. Elsewhere, the Prime Minister's spokesman insisted there was an independent process for nominations for honours, when asked about calls for the team to be recognised for their victory. However, in a rare show of support from the Government for members of the team to receive nominations, he added: 'I hope we'll see lots of nominations for this incredible winning team. 'Many of them were honoured after their incredible Euros win just three years ago, and everyone can see what an amazing job Sarina (Wiegman) and the team have done for this country in terms of its historic win, and women's sport more generally.' Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner will host the Downing Street reception for the England team on Monday night. Asked if Sir Keir Starmer was disappointed not to be at the event, his spokesman insisted the Prime Minister was 'obviously very pleased to be meeting President Trump up in Scotland'. He added: 'I'm sure he (the Prime Minister) will have a chance to celebrate with them in the future as well.'
