Vintage Chicago Tribune: How Wrigley Field got lights and why Cubs fans had to wait past 8-8-88 to raise 'W' flag1943: The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals played without the aid of lights at Wrigley Field in the National League's first twilight game. Though the first pitch was thrown at 6 p.m., Major League Baseball still considered it a day game. The Cubs shut out the Cardinals 6-0.
The Cubs' first night game didn't take place until 45 years later.
1950: Tribune's Walter Simmons reported the outbreak of the Korean War.
On a hunch, Simmons flew to Seoul and was believed to be one of the first U.S. correspondents to file eyewitness accounts after the North Koreans crossed the 38th parallel and the war began.
President Harry Truman ordered U.S. ground forces into action on June 30, 1950. 'The attack upon Korea makes it plain beyond all doubt that communism has passed beyond the use of subversion to conquer independent nations and will now use armed invasion and war,' he told Congress.
Simmons returned to his home base in Tokyo three weeks later, wearing a suit so filthy his wife made him take it off and burn it before coming into their home.
'What's more,' he said in the 1957 profile, 'I had fleas.'

Roberts, who will also manage the National League All-Star team, offered more definitive answers on some follow up questions, though. He ruled out the idea of Ohtani pitching in the game and indicated that he would position his superstar as the leadoff hitter. "The fans love him," Roberts added. "He's the best player. It's going to be exciting for the fans to watch him in Atlanta for the All-Star Game." Baseball fans should be happy enough to see Ohtani's bat in the Midsummer Classic. Cubs Trade Ideas Lands Former Two-Time All-Star Pitcher Luis Severino originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Despite injuries to their aces, the Chicago Cubs' starting pitching has performed well in 2025, led by Matthew Boyd and Jameson Taillon, and Shota Imanaga when he has been healthy. Advertisement However, the Cubs have had to lean on three young starters in Colin Rea, Ben Brown, and Cade Horton after Justin Steele went out for the season in April, and Imanaga has been dealing with a hamstring injury. The young pitchers have been able to get the job done, for the most part, but how long will that last? The last five games may be an early sign that the Cubs won't be able to rely on that production for the second half of the season. The Cubs have lost four of their last five games, and their starters have given up 28 runs (25 earned) over their last 24 innings pitched. Imanaga is scheduled to return soon, which will give the Cubs some relief. However, the Cubs need to make an addition before the trade deadline to strengthen their starting pitching. Advertisement Severino has plenty of experience in the league, playing in his 10th year in MLB. The starting pitcher's overall stats don't look overly appealing on the season with a 4.42 ERA and a 1.338 WHIP. However, when you look at Severino's home and road splits, they tell an entirely different story. The veteran starter has an ERA of 6.79 in his home starts, but when he's on the road, his ERA is a stellar 0.93. Severino has been lights out when on the road in 2025, and pitched eight innings of one-run baseball in his lone start against the Cubs' division rivals, the Milwaukee Brewers, earlier this year. While you wouldn't expect Severino to be able to keep up his sub-one ERA on a regular basis in a Cubs uniform, you would expect his overall numbers to drastically improve when none of his starts would come in the Athletics' ballpark anymore. Advertisement The Cubs need to add a reliable starter before the trade deadline to make a World Series run, and Severino would provide that. The only thing is Severino's contract. The Athletics starter is in the first year of a three-year, $67 million deal, which would be a high price to pay. Sam Ponder opens up on relationship with colleagues in rare words on ESPN after firing
Sam Ponder is speaking out after being shockingly fired by ESPN in August 2024. The former host of 'Sunday NFL Countdown,' who was let go as part of the network's cost-cutting layoffs last summer, revealed Monday in a fan Q&A on Instagram that she's still close with her former 'College GameDay' colleagues, Kirk Herbstreit, Rece Davis and David Pollack.
