Vintage Chicago Tribune: How Wrigley Field got lights and why Cubs fans had to wait past 8-8-88 to raise 'W' flag1943: The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals played without the aid of lights at Wrigley Field in the National League's first twilight game. Though the first pitch was thrown at 6 p.m., Major League Baseball still considered it a day game. The Cubs shut out the Cardinals 6-0.
The Cubs' first night game didn't take place until 45 years later.
1950: Tribune's Walter Simmons reported the outbreak of the Korean War.
On a hunch, Simmons flew to Seoul and was believed to be one of the first U.S. correspondents to file eyewitness accounts after the North Koreans crossed the 38th parallel and the war began.
President Harry Truman ordered U.S. ground forces into action on June 30, 1950. 'The attack upon Korea makes it plain beyond all doubt that communism has passed beyond the use of subversion to conquer independent nations and will now use armed invasion and war,' he told Congress.
Simmons returned to his home base in Tokyo three weeks later, wearing a suit so filthy his wife made him take it off and burn it before coming into their home.
'What's more,' he said in the 1957 profile, 'I had fleas.'

Dodgers' Dave Roberts Mum on Shohei Ohtani Home Run Derby Plans

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers are working to build two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani back up into a starting pitcher. And in the meantime, he just keeps on slugging. Ohtani has now opened two games for the Dodgers and could see his next start come on Saturday against the Kansas City Royals. Ohtani has provided a critical bat at the top of the Dodgers' order and there was some concern that adding a pitching workload might hurt his offensive production. But so far, he's put those concerns to rest. Since returning to the mound, Ohtani has 10 RBI, two homers and four walks in just eight games. At this point, there's very little that Ohtani can do to build on his legacy as the most exciting player in all of baseball. And as he leads all National League players in votes for the All-Star Game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked if he might return to the Home Run Derby in hopes of winning it for the first time. (Photo by) More Wang/Getty "That is a question for Shohei," Roberts responded, according to Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register. "I'm staying out of that." Roberts, who will also manage the National League All-Star team, offered more definitive answers on some follow up questions, though. He ruled out the idea of Ohtani pitching in the game and indicated that he would position his superstar as the leadoff hitter. "The fans love him," Roberts added. "He's the best player. It's going to be exciting for the fans to watch him in Atlanta for the All-Star Game." Baseball fans should be happy enough to see Ohtani's bat in the Midsummer Classic. But for a player who can seemingly do it all, it might not be too much to ask that he swings it in the Home Run Derby as well. More MLB: Time For Angels To Let Mike Trout Depart Anaheim?

Cubs Trade Ideas Lands Former Two-Time All-Star Pitcher Luis Severino

Cubs Trade Ideas Lands Former Two-Time All-Star Pitcher Luis Severino originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Despite injuries to their aces, the Chicago Cubs' starting pitching has performed well in 2025, led by Matthew Boyd and Jameson Taillon, and Shota Imanaga when he has been healthy. Advertisement However, the Cubs have had to lean on three young starters in Colin Rea, Ben Brown, and Cade Horton after Justin Steele went out for the season in April, and Imanaga has been dealing with a hamstring injury. The young pitchers have been able to get the job done, for the most part, but how long will that last? The last five games may be an early sign that the Cubs won't be able to rely on that production for the second half of the season. The Cubs have lost four of their last five games, and their starters have given up 28 runs (25 earned) over their last 24 innings pitched. Imanaga is scheduled to return soon, which will give the Cubs some relief. However, the Cubs need to make an addition before the trade deadline to strengthen their starting pitching. Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell (11) watches players warm up during spring training Scuteri-Imagn Images ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan proposed the idea of Athletics pitcher Luis Severino being a potential trade target for the Cubs. Advertisement Severino has plenty of experience in the league, playing in his 10th year in MLB. The starting pitcher's overall stats don't look overly appealing on the season with a 4.42 ERA and a 1.338 WHIP. However, when you look at Severino's home and road splits, they tell an entirely different story. The veteran starter has an ERA of 6.79 in his home starts, but when he's on the road, his ERA is a stellar 0.93. Severino has been lights out when on the road in 2025, and pitched eight innings of one-run baseball in his lone start against the Cubs' division rivals, the Milwaukee Brewers, earlier this year. While you wouldn't expect Severino to be able to keep up his sub-one ERA on a regular basis in a Cubs uniform, you would expect his overall numbers to drastically improve when none of his starts would come in the Athletics' ballpark anymore. Advertisement The Cubs need to add a reliable starter before the trade deadline to make a World Series run, and Severino would provide that. The only thing is Severino's contract. The Athletics starter is in the first year of a three-year, $67 million deal, which would be a high price to pay. Sam Ponder opens up on relationship with colleagues in rare words on ESPN after firing

Sam Ponder is speaking out after being shockingly fired by ESPN in August 2024. The former host of 'Sunday NFL Countdown,' who was let go as part of the network's cost-cutting layoffs last summer, revealed Monday in a fan Q&A on Instagram that she's still close with her former 'College GameDay' colleagues, Kirk Herbstreit, Rece Davis and David Pollack. 'David Pollack is stuck with me as the big brother I never (jk) wanted, and I was texting with Kirk Herbstreit the day before I got fired,' Ponder, 39, said when asked if she still talks to the 'College GameDay' crew, adding a crying laughing emoji. 4 Former ESPN host Sam Ponder explained that she's still close with her former 'College GameDay' colleagues, Kirk Herbstreit, Rece Davis and David Pollack in a fan Q&A on her Instagram Story on Monday. I'll never forget how all 3 of them loved Jesus and treated people. I will be a 'college gameday' fan as long as they continue to make it about the people. It's such a special show.' Herbstreit reposted her message — which has since expired — on his own Instagram Story, according to Athlon Sports. Ponder first joined ESPN in 2011, working mostly in the college football space. She contributed to and hosted 'College GameDay' from 2012-16, and worked as an in-game sideline reporter in 2016. 4 Kirk Herbstreit sits on the set of ESPN 'College GameDay' prior to the College Football Playoff first round game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Tennessee Volunteers in Columbus on December 21, 2024. ESPN's Mike Greenberg — who also hosts 'NBA Countdown' and the daily morning program 'Get Up' — replaced Ponder as the host of 'Sunday NFL Countdown.' Ponder, who has yet to announce her next gig, wasn't the only notable ESPN football personality to be removed from the network's lineup in advance of the 2024 college and pro campaigns. Former Heisman winner Robert Griffin III was also let go with years left on his contract. 4 The Liberty University alum joined ESPN in 2011. Getty Images for SiriusXM Griffin reportedly landed a job with Fox Sports in April. Ponder, the wife of former Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder, made waves on social media last summer over controversial female boxer Imane Khelif, who won Olympic gold at the Paris Games. 'ENOUGH is what all of us should be saying!! Proud of this woman,' Ponder wrote, quoting a post about Italian Angela Carini, who withdrew from her opening bout with Khelif. Ponder also expressed support for President Donald Trump after his assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally last July. Nonetheless, reports suggest that Ponder was removed not for her political beliefs, but instead for cost-cutting purposes as ESPN alters its programming.
