Sam Ponder opens up on relationship with colleagues in rare words on ESPN after firing
The former host of 'Sunday NFL Countdown,' who was let go as part of the network's cost-cutting layoffs last summer, revealed Monday in a fan Q&A on Instagram that she's still close with her former 'College GameDay' colleagues, Kirk Herbstreit, Rece Davis and David Pollack.
'David Pollack is stuck with me as the big brother I never (jk) wanted, and I was texting with Kirk Herbstreit the day before I got fired,' Ponder, 39, said when asked if she still talks to the 'College GameDay' crew, adding a crying laughing emoji.

'Rece Davis is my forever favorite. I'll never forget how all 3 of them loved Jesus and treated people. I will be a 'college gameday' fan as long as they continue to make it about the people. It's such a special show.'
Herbstreit reposted her message — which has since expired — on his own Instagram Story, according to Athlon Sports.
Ponder first joined ESPN in 2011, working mostly in the college football space. She contributed to and hosted 'College GameDay' from 2012-16, and worked as an in-game sideline reporter in 2016.

She was promoted to 'Sunday NFL Countdown' in 2017, joining a signature program that airs Sunday mornings prior to 1 p.m. ET kickoffs, with an analyst desk that features Randy Moss, Tedy Bruschi and Rex Ryan.
ESPN's Mike Greenberg — who also hosts 'NBA Countdown' and the daily morning program 'Get Up' — replaced Ponder as the host of 'Sunday NFL Countdown.'
Ponder, who has yet to announce her next gig, wasn't the only notable ESPN football personality to be removed from the network's lineup in advance of the 2024 college and pro campaigns.
Former Heisman winner Robert Griffin III was also let go with years left on his contract.

Griffin reportedly landed a job with Fox Sports in April.
Ponder, the wife of former Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder, made waves on social media last summer over controversial female boxer Imane Khelif, who won Olympic gold at the Paris Games.
'ENOUGH is what all of us should be saying!! Proud of this woman,' Ponder wrote, quoting a post about Italian Angela Carini, who withdrew from her opening bout with Khelif.
Ponder also expressed support for President Donald Trump after his assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally last July.
Nonetheless, reports suggest that Ponder was removed not for her political beliefs, but instead for cost-cutting purposes as ESPN alters its programming.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported a couple of days ago that Rice is expected to have his disciplinary hearing with the NFL on Sept. 30, which seems to indicate that Rice will be able to play in at least the first four games of the regular season. "The expectation is Rashee Rice is going to be suspended for a portion of the 2025 season," Pelissero reported. "The question now is how much? My understanding is the NFL initially proposed a lengthy suspension — double-digit games for Rashee Rice — the players union and Rice's attorney and agents argued for a much shorter suspension, in part, because there is no precedent for suspending someone for over half the season in a case like this." They have lacked a legitimate star wide receiver ever since trading Tyreek Hill, an eight-time Pro Bowler, in 2022. Additionally, speedster wideout Xavier Worthy showed some promise as a rookie in 2024 with 742 total yards from scrimmage and nine touchdowns. Their tag-team duo of Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt at running back looks rock solid, as does their defense, which was fourth in points allowed last year. Any team with Mahomes on it can beat any other team, especially in high-leverage situations, and he could have as many weapons around him as he has had in a couple of years -- when Rice is available to play. Caitlin Clark not with Fever in Connecticut today following death of boyfriend's grandmother
Caitlin Clark, who has been sidelined since July 15 with a right groin injury, did not travel with the Indiana Fever for Sunday's game at the Connecticut Sun. A team official declined to comment on any reason, but Clark's boyfriend, Butler assistant coach Connor McCaffery, shared an Instagram post late Saturday night mourning the death of his grandmother, Marit Smaby-Nowlin. 'I've been trying to think of what to say and I can't,' he wrote. 'It's impossible to put into words how much you meant to our entire family. I refuse to say goodbye, so until we meet again.' Will Caitlin Clark return to play? 'That's the hope. The hope is that she's back' Smaby-Nowlin, 80, was found unresponsive in a northern Minnesota lake Wednesday evening, according to the Star Tribune. The Sheriff's Office told reporters that responders arrived to find family members attempting to revive Smaby-Nowlin. An official cause of death has yet to be released. Smaby-Nowlin was brought back to land by first responders before emergency medical personnel took her to Cook Hospital, but she soon died, according to the Sheriff's Office.
