TikTok's beloved D-Day veteran 'Papa Jake' Larson dies at 102
'Our beloved Papa Jake has passed away on July 17th at 102 years young,' granddaughter McKaela Larson posted on his social media accounts. 'He went peacefully.''As Papa would say, love you all the mostest,' she wrote.Born Dec. 20, 1922, in Owatonna, Minnesota, Larson enlisted in the National Guard in 1938, lying about his age since he was only 15 at the time. In 1942, he was sent overseas and was stationed in Northern Ireland. He became operations sergeant and assembled the planning books for the invasion of Normandy. He was among the nearly 160,000 Allied troops who stormed the Normandy shore on D-Day, June 6, 1944, surviving machine-gun fire when he landed on Omaha Beach. He made it unhurt to the bluffs that overlook the beach, then studded with German gun emplacements that mowed down American soldiers.'We are the lucky ones,' Larson told The Associated Press at the 81st anniversary of D-Day in June, speaking amid the immaculate rows of graves at the American cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach.'We are their family. We have the responsibility to honor these guys who gave us a chance to be alive.'He went on to fight through the Battle of the Bulge, a grueling month-long fight in Belgium and Luxembourg that was one of the defining moments of the war and of Hitler's defeat. His service earned him a Bronze Star and a French Legion of Honor award. In recent years, Larson made repeated trips to Normandy for D-Day commemorations — and at every stop, 'Papa Jake' was greeted by people asking for a selfie. In return, he offered up a big hug, to their greatest joy.One memorable encounter came in 2023, when he came across Bill Gladden, a then-99-year-old British veteran who survived a glider landing on D-Day and a bullet that tore through his ankle.advertisement'I want to give you a hug, thank you. I got tears in my eyes. We were meant to meet,' Larson told Gladden, as their hands, lined and spotted with age, clasped tightly. Gladden died the following year.In his TikTok posts and interviews, Larson combined humorous anecdotes with somber reminders about the horrors of war.Reflecting to AP on the three years he was in Europe, Larson said he is 'no hero.' Speaking in 2024, he also had a message to world leaders: 'Make peace not war.'He often called himself 'the luckiest man in the world,' and expressed awe at all the attention he was getting. 'I'm just a country boy. Now I'm a star on TikTok,' he told AP in 2023. 'I'm a legend! I didn't plan this, it came about.'Small-town museums and groups around Normandy that work to honor D-Day's heroes and fallen shared tributes online to Larson, one of their most loyal visitors.'He was an exceptional witness and bearer of memory,' the Overlord Museum posted on Facebook.'He came every year to the museum, with his smile, his humility and his tales that touched all generations. His stories will continue to live. Rest in peace Papa Jake,' it read.advertisement'Thanks for everything.'- Ends

The Vatican is taking an unconventional route to evangelism by tapping 'hot priests' with large social media followings to spread the Church's message online. More than 1,000 priests and friars have been invited to Rome amid declining congregation numbers worldwide.(Instagram) As reported by The Telegraph, this unusual outreach strategy includes figures like Father Giuseppe Fusari, a bodybuilding priest from Brescia, Italy, who boasts over 60,000 Instagram followers. Fusari believes social media holds the power to bring people 'closer to the Church.' The 58-year-old often shares images showing off his tattooed biceps alongside spiritual reflections, appealing to a broad age group, most of his followers fall between 25 and 55. Another priest, Father Cosimo Schena, has been dubbed Italy's 'most beloved' priest after his online presence helped nearly double the size of his congregation. The 46-year-old has over 454,000 followers on Instagram, where he combines pet adoption requests with gospel teachings. Father Ambrogio Mazza, known for his guitar-playing and bike-riding lifestyle, is also part of this new wave of digital evangelists. With more than 460,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok, Mazza shares selfies that show him embracing both faith and fun, earning him praise from followers who describe him as 'beautiful' and 'elegant.' The late Pope Francis had long emphasised the importance of social media in reaching global audiences. His successor, Pope Leo XIV, has continued the effort, maintaining a strong online presence and regularly engaging with his nearly 19 million followers. This is not the first time the Church has leaned into aesthetics for outreach. In 2022, a calendar featuring attractive Roman priests made global headlines, reportedly selling over 75,000 copies annually.

Meet Harold Terens, a 102-year-old WWII vet who is set to have his first bar mitzvah at the Pentagon
Source: X Age is just a number, and Harold Terens is proving it in the most extraordinary way. Recently turned 102 years old, the World War II veteran from Florida has decided to celebrate a milestone he missed nearly nine decades ago: his first bar mitzvah. And not just anywhere, it will be held at the Pentagon. Born in New York City, Terens marked his 102nd birthday with a festive brunch at a hotel in Delray Beach, joined by his second wife Jeanne (age 97), three children, eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. His granddaughter serenaded him with a cappella singing while he mambo danced with Jeanne. 'Best day of my life, believe it or not, and I've had so many,' Terens told The Post. 'I thought my wedding last year in Normandy was the best day of my life, but I think today topped it. And believe me, the best is yet to come. You ain't seen nothing yet.' Terens was previously married to his beloved first wife, Thelma, for 70 years. 'I felt her there in spirit,' he said. Why he never had a bar mitzvah until now? Terens was born to a religious mother from Poland and an anti-religious father from Russia. The two made a compromise: only their older son would have a bar mitzvah. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Harold was never given the chance — a loss he quietly carried his whole life. But that changed recently when Terens was speaking on a panel with CNN's Wolf Blitzer. A Pentagon rabbi overheard him express his lifelong wish. The idea took root immediately. 'That is definitely on my bucket list and that is truly going to happen,' he told The Post. 'It will be a sensational event. My entire family will be there along with friends. They'll all come. No one will miss that event.' He added to the Associated Press: 'That's my next bucket list. I am going to be bar mitzvahed in the Pentagon.' Life of service Terens enlisted in 1942 and was deployed to Great Britain in 1943 as a radio repair technician in a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter squadron. All four original pilots in his unit were killed during the war. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, as 150,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, Terens worked to repair aircraft returning from France. Half his squadron's pilots were lost that day. After the war, he helped transport freed prisoners of war from Normandy back to England. In June 2024, Terens was honored by the French government during the 80th anniversary of the country's liberation. It wasn't his first time back in France, nor will it be his last. 'It's very emotional every time I go,' he told The Post. 'I have friends there that I long to see and that gives me a great deal of pleasure. But going with the veterans is very, very special. I've had some very memorable moments in Normandy.' Source: X Still bursting with energy, Terens has an ambitious year ahead. His bucket list includes a 10-day transatlantic trip that will take him to the opera in Milan, a ballet in Paris, and the London Philharmonic in the UK, all before his Pentagon bar mitzvah next summer. Terens says about 80 people are already on the guest list for the ceremony, and he's planning to make it count. 'My entire family will be there along with friends,' he told The Post. 'They'll all come. No one will miss that event.' The secret to a long, joyful Life Terens, who has met five U.S. presidents, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Donald Trump, says he owes his longevity to one key thing: low stress. 'I think I'm the richest guy in the world and I don't have any money in the bank,' he told The Post. 'I wouldn't trade my life with anyone in the world no matter who it was. I am happy just who I am and with what I have. I think I have more than anyone else in the world. I am the luckiest guy that God ever created.' 'And when I say the best is yet to come, I don't know what it is — but it's there. I promise you.'

When Randhir Kapoor Accused Sunjay Kapur Of Living With Another Woman Before Divorcing Karisma Kapoor: "He Was Giving Bulls**t To Her"
Karisma Kapoor's ex-husband and businessman Sunjay Kapur died on June 12. What's Happening Sunjay and Karisma's separation made headlines, especially due to the legal and personal battles that followed. Their divorce proceedings became contentious, with both parties making strong allegations against each other. Karisma's father, actor Randhir Kapoor, also expressed disapproval of the marriage. Karisma and Sunjay got married in 2003 in a lavish ceremony. The wedding took place at the actress's ancestral home, Krishna Raj bungalow, in Mumbai. While the marriage initially appeared to be a happy one, the couple filed for divorce by mutual consent in 2014. The divorce proceedings took a turn when Karisma accused Sunjay of domestic violence. In response, Sunjay alleged that the actress had married him for financial gain. As reported by Mumbai Mirror, he claimed that Karisma married him in a "calculated and clinical" manner. The situation escalated into a public exchange of accusations. Reacting to the claims made by Sunjay, Karisma's father, Randhir Kapoor, said, "Everyone knows our credentials. We are Kapoors. We don't need to run after anyone's money. We have been blessed with not only money, but our talent can support us for the rest of our lives. Sunjay is a third-class man. I never wanted Karisma to marry him. He has debauchery in his system and never cared for his wife. He has been giving bull*** to her, and living with another woman without divorce. The entire Delhi knows how he is. I would not like to say anything more than this." Eventually, both parties reached a settlement, and the divorce was finalised in 2016. As per Mid-Day, Karisma received a substantial alimony settlement. The report stated, "Karisma will get Sunjay's father's house (in Khar) transferred in her name. Sunjay has to purchase bonds worth Rs. 14 crore for the children, which will attract a monthly interest of around Rs. 10 lakh." Background Initial reports cited a cardiac arrest as the cause of Sunjay Kapur's death. However, new reports suggest that the 53-year-old may have died due to complications caused by a bee sting incident. According to reports, Sunjay was playing a game of polo when he collapsed. It has now emerged that during the game, he may have swallowed a bee, which stung him and triggered a severe allergic reaction. This reaction is believed to have caused the cardiac arrest. Sunjay Kapur's personal life had often made headlines. His first marriage was to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani, which ended in divorce. He later married actress Karisma Kapoor. The couple had two children, Samaira and Kiaan, before getting divorced in 2016. He later married former model and actress Priya Sachdev and welcomed a son, Azarius, in 2018.
