Moroccan women embroider 'art with purpose'

In a small village on the coast of southern Morocco, women gather in a house to create collaborative works of textile art, and also earn a living.
Several hunch over large canvasses, embroidering their latest piece at the women-only workshop, in the village of 400 people. Some of their works have been shown internationally.
"This project has changed my life," said Hanane Ichbikili, a 28-year-old former nursing student turned project creative director.
"And yet I had never held an embroidery needle before," she told AFP.
Just 19 percent of Moroccan women hold steady jobs, according to official figures, and in rural areas they are particularly affected by poverty, unpaid labour and a lack of opportunity.
An artist with roots in both Morocco and France has tried to make a difference.
Margaux Derhy founded the workshop in 2022 in her father's native village of Sidi R'bat, around 70 kilometres south of Agadir, to fulfil her "dream to make art with purpose".
The project uses textiles and old photographs to explore her family heritage before they left the country in the 1960s, turning sepia-toned portraits and scenes into large silk-and-linen canvases.
The North African country was a protectorate of France before gaining its independence in 1956.
- Creative process -
The project is more than just personal for Derhy -- it also provides local women in the small fishing village employment.
"I wanted to be engaged on the ground," said Derhy, adding that she hired 10 local women to work full-time for a monthly salary exceeding Morocco's private-sector minimum wage of 3,045 dirhams ($330).
The women's hands glide over frames that were once used by Paris's prestigious Maison Lesage, the world-famous embroidery house that has worked with some of the greatest names in fashion.
The creative process is collaborative, with Derhy drawing an outline and the team then gathering to choose the threads and colour palette for each section.
A canvas can take up to five months to complete.
The finished works, priced at up to $5,620, have been shown in exhibitions in Marrakesh, Paris and Brussels. Future exhibits are planned for Casablanca's L'Atelier 21 and Tabari Artspace Gallery in Dubai.
The workshop has also helped to challenge perceived ideas about women in the village.
"At first, some of the women had to hide to come because it was frowned upon," said Khadija Ahuilat, 26, who oversees operations.
- 'A blessing' -
She said some people thought the project "was nonsense, and a woman should stay at home".
"But we managed to change that. I'm very proud to have contributed to this change, even if on a small scale."
Her mother, Aicha Jout, 50, a widow who once gathered mussels and raised livestock to support her family, is now one of the embroiderers.
"It changes a lot for me to be here," she said.
"I love the idea of embroidering on pictures, but also of passing on the craft to other women."

Jout learned to embroider at the age of 12, and has trained the rest of her mostly single or widowed colleagues.
"There aren't really a lot of job opportunities here, so when the chance came I didn't hesitate for a second," said Haddia Nachit, 59, one of the workshop's most efficient embroiders.
Her nickname among the women is "TGV" -- after France's high-speed train.
Seated next to Nachit, Fadma Lachgar, also 59, said the work allowed her to help her family.
"Resuming embroidery at my age, after 20 years of stopping, is a blessing," she said.

The marriage of the spices favoured in Moroccan cuisine with honey creates a bit of sorcery in a tagine. A chicken tagine recipe needs fruit, and dates are the perfect fruity ingredient for a spiced chicken dish. This turned out exquisitely; easily the best chicken tagine dish I've made (he says with all due humility, promise). Just a few tricks to bear in mind: the skins of the chicken thighs must be removed as they'd become soggy and horrible while cooking; the sweetness and spiciness need to be balanced, and browning the flour-seasoned chicken pieces to begin with makes a massive difference to the quality of the outcome. Though I did cook it in a tagine, it can just as well be made in a heavy casserole of some kind. I have one of those Le Creuset ones with a heavy cast-iron base and a conical stoneware lid, my blue ceramic tagine having broken years ago. I had bought it at the annual French market that comes to the south of England every December, a real beauty. We'd also buy tins of pâté de foie gras and other French delights as a Christmas time treat during our Chichester years. Ingredients (Serves 4) 8 chicken thighs, skins removed, cut into two pieces each 2 medium onions, quartered 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp ground ginger 2 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 scant tsp chilli powder 1 tsp ground turmeric 1 Tbsp cornflour Olive oil as needed 2 garlic cloves, sliced 1 x 2 cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and sliced 1 cinnamon stick 2 bay leaves 2 cups chicken stock 3 Tbsp honey 1 x 400 g can chopped peeled tomatoes 1 x 400 g can chickpeas, drained 250 g pitted dates 100 g whole raw almonds, toasted Coriander leaves, chopped, f0r garnish Salt and black pepper to taste Method Mix the six dry ground spices (cumin, ginger, coriander, cinnamon, chilli, turmeric) with the cornflour in a bowl and coat the chicken pieces all over in it. That blend of spices will give you the distinctive flavour of a Moroccan spice mix. Retain the leftover spice mix. Heat olive oil in a tagine and fry the chicken pieces in batches until browned on all sides. Add more oil if needed. Remove to a side dish and fry the onions for 4 to 5 minutes, then return the browned chicken pieces to the tagine and add any remaining spice-flour mixture, the garlic, ginger, cinnamon stick, can of chopped tomatoes, bay leaves, and the honey. Pour in the chicken stock and stir. Season with salt and pepper, cover and cook for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and add the dates and chickpeas. Cook for another 5 minutes. Meanwhile, toast the almonds in a pan until they turn a slightly darker hue, just 2 or 3 minutes, and chop the coriander leaves. Serve with couscous prepared according to the packet instructions, scatter the toasted almonds on top and sprinkle with coriander. DM

NAIROBI - During his imprisonment, Kenyan author Ngugi wa Thiong'o decided he would never write in English again, a defiant move that helped put literature in African languages firmly on the map. Ngugi died at the age of 87 on Wednesday, his daughter announced on Facebook. "It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dad, Ngugi wa Thiong'o this Wednesday morning," wrote Wanjiku Wa Ngugi. "He lived a full life, fought a good fight." Widely regarded as east Africa's most influential writer, Ngugi sought to forge a body of literature reflecting the land and people from which he came, and not follow in the footsteps of Western tradition. "I believe so much in equality of languages. I am completely horrified by the hierarchy of languages," he told AFP in an interview in 2022 from California, where he lived in self-imposed exile. His decision in the 1970s to abandon English in favour of his native Kikuyu, as well as Kenya's national language Swahili, was met with widespread incomprehension at first. "We all thought he was mad... and brave at the same time," said Kenyan writer David Maillu. "We asked ourselves who would buy the books." Yet the bold choice built his reputation and turned him into an African literary landmark. The softly-spoken writer also lived a life as dramatic as his novels. His criticism of post-colonial Kenya -- describing the violence of the political class and the newly rich as "the death of hopes, the death of dreams and the death of beauty" -- brought him into frequent conflict with the authorities. - 'Decolonising the mind' - Born James Ngugi into a large peasant family in Kenya's central Limuru region on January 5, 1938, he spent the first 25 years of his life in what was then a British settler colony. His early works were heavily influenced by his country's battle against colonial rule and the brutal Mau Mau war of 1952-1960. In his first collection of essays, "Homecoming", he described himself as a "stranger in his home country". But his anger would later extend to the inequalities of post-colonial Kenyan society, incurring the wrath of the government. In 1977, Ngugi and fellow writer Ngugi wa Mirii were jailed without charge after the staging of their play "Ngaahika Ndeenda" ("I Will Marry When I Want"). It was then that he decided to write his first novel in Kikuyu, "Devil on the Cross", which was published in 1980. AFP | Tony KARUMBA He had already abandoned his "English" name to become Ngugi wa Thiong'o. "I wrote it on the only paper available to me, which was toilet paper," he told US radio broadcaster NPR. Amnesty International named him a prisoner of conscience, before a global campaign secured his release from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison in December 1978. As early as 1965, Ngugi's novel "The River Between" embarked on a critical examination of the role of Christianity in an African setting. "If the white man's religion made you abandon a custom and then did not give you something else of equal value, you became lost," he wrote. He went into self-imposed exile in 1982 after a ban on theatre groups in Kenya, moving first to Britain then to the United States. In 1986, he published one of his best-known works, "Decolonising the Mind", a collection of essays about the role of language in forging national culture, history and identity. - 'A Kenyan Tolstoy' - When Ngugi returned home on a visit in 2004, he was mobbed by supporters at Nairobi's airport. "I have come back with an open mind, an open heart and open arms," he declared. Days later, he and his wife were attacked by armed men: she was raped and he was beaten up. It was not clear whether robbery was the sole motive or whether the assault was politically motivated. Margaretta wa Gacheru, a sociologist and former student of Ngugi, described him as a national icon. "To me he's like a Kenyan Tolstoy, in the sense of being a storyteller, in the sense of his love of the language and panoramic view of society, his description of the landscape of social relations, of class and class struggles," she said. In addition to fiction, the father-of-three, who became a professor of comparative literature at the University of California Irvine, also published essays and three memoirs. His most recent book was the genre-defying novel-in-verse "The Perfect Nine", which he translated into English in 2020. It recounted the founding of the Kikuyu people, blending folklore and allegory. From widening economic inequality to the lingering trauma of racism, the issues raised in the play still persist in Kenya and beyond, a fact not lost on its creator. "I am an activist, I want to see change," Ngugi told AFP. "I hope we can continue striving for that world. We cannot give up."
