New Jerusalem seeks generous support this Mandela Month
As a long-established sanctuary for vulnerable children, the home provides essential love, shelter, and education.

However, with only 80 out of 120 children currently receiving funding from the Department of Social Development, the home faces significant challenges in meeting the increasing needs of its residents.
Hopkins Kaira, the home's marketing manager, emphasised the importance of support during Mandela Month—a time when organisations and individuals mobilise resources to give back.
'In this month, we see many people and organisations stepping forward to help,' said Kaira. 'The home has expanded, and so have the needs—maintenance, school materials, uniforms, and everyday essentials, among others. The children deserve a safe and nurturing environment, and these donations directly contribute to that.'
The home's wishlist for this Mandela Month is extensive and includes storybooks, fencing, gates, dustbins, furniture, paint, toiletries, food, cleaning supplies, and more.
Moreover, volunteers are essential to the cause and are encouraged to lend their time and skills. 'Tasks like weed removal behind the centre and outdoor maintenance are crucial for creating a welcoming environment for our children,' Hopkins added.
He also highlighted that the classroom project now only requires painting.
Tshepiso Mofokeng from the Hyde Johannesburg Hotel noted the impactful early donation made on July 4, which effectively kicked off the month of giving.
He said donating is part of their ethos, and they seized the opportunity to contribute well ahead of Mandela Day on July 18.
'New Jerusalem was introduced to us by one of our colleagues, who has been working closely with the home…We partnered with them in 2023 and have been consistently donating food. It's a heartwarming initiative, allowing us to engage with the children directly,' said Mofokeng.

Glen Hills church stitches for charitable causes
A GLEN HILLS church recently used their creative talents to give back to a children's home, babies' homes as well as a shelter for abused women and children. Rivers Church recently handed over 66 blankets to the Durban Child & Youth Care Centre in Berea. In the past the church has crocheted and donated blankets to the St Thomas Children's Home, The Baby Home Durban North, the Domino Babies' Homes, and the Sahara Shelter for Abused Women and Children. 'The Crochet project started early last year when we realised the children at our beneficiary children's homes didn't have proper blankets for winter. The ladies from the Foundation team wanted to make blankets for Mandela Day, and our initial goal was 67. But everyone got so inspired that we ended up making and handing over 96 blankets. Seeing how much the blankets meant to the children after that first handover really motivated us. 'The team decided to make blankets for the 66 children at the Durban Child & Youth Care Centre. Each blanket was handmade with love and personalised with the child's name on a waterproof label, making it extra special for each child. Giving back to the community is really important because it helps make a difference in people's lives and creates a stronger, more caring environment for everyone. ‘Pawsome' way to spend Mandela Day
RICHARDS Bay SPCA is calling on animal lovers to 'pawse' their day and spend 67 minutes with the animals in their care this Mandela Day on Friday, 18 July.
