'Mansau-Ansau' Trail showcases hidden treasures of North Borneo
KOTA KINABALU (July 9): A five-day familiarisation trip themed 'Mansau-Ansau North Borneo Trail: Culture, Adventure & Nature' has shed light on Sabah's lesser-known northern corridor, unveiling its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage to a select group of media and tourism players.
Organised by Tourism Malaysia Sabah from July 4 to 8, the initiative aimed to spotlight Tamparuli, Tuaran, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu and Kudat as untapped gems within the state's rural tourism landscape.
Derived from the Kadazan Dusun language, 'Mansau Ansau' simply means 'jalan-jalan' or to stroll. True to its name, the programme took participants on an immersive journey that blends nature, culture and off-the-beaten-path adventure, offering experiences often overlooked by mainstream tourists.
The initiative supports the Cuti-Cuti Malaysia campaign and Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (TMM2026), targeting increased footfall to rural destinations while promoting community-led tourism.
A total of nine participants, including local media, social media influencers and tourism industry partners from Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak and Brunei joined the trail. Among the highlights were visits to iconic attractions such as the Tip of Borneo in Kudat and the stunning Floating Coral Bar in Pitas.
The group also had the rare opportunity to experience traditional rituals at Walai Tobilung, including a bobolian ceremony, cultural dance performances, local musical instruments and ancestral dishes cooked with native techniques.
Handcrafted excellence took centre stage in visits to community-based craft hubs: Sulaman Pis in Kudat, Corn Husk Crafts in Kota Marudu and Sulaman Serdang as well as traditional parang forging in Kota Belud, all showcasing the exceptional creativity and skills of local artisans.
One of the trip's standout moments was the hike up Aura Montoria in Kota Belud, hailed as one of Sabah's premier trekking routes for its scenic but challenging trail.
Meanwhile, a village cycling tour in Kg Sangkir, Kota Belud allowed participants to soak in the serenity of lush paddy fields, offering a taste of kampung life. At Tembara River Cruise in Tuaran, they cruised through mangrove-fringed waterways, catching glimpses of mesmerising fireflies under the twilight sky, an enchanting end to the day's adventure.
Tourism Malaysia Sabah director Haryanty Abu Bakar said the programme supports Tourism Malaysia's broader mission to diversify Sabah's tourism portfolio by promoting lesser-explored destinations.
'This initiative also aligns with our digital engagement strategies. Through travel storytelling, the media plays a vital role in capturing and conveying authentic experiences that resonate deeply with today's audience,' she said.
She added that community engagement and environmental conservation remain at the heart of rural tourism development, key components being driven by Sabah's own tourism operators.
Tourism Malaysia expressed its appreciation to all partners involved and reiterated its commitment to strengthening strategic collaborations in anticipation of a successful Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.

MP reiterates call for direct Sandakan international flights
Published on: Wednesday, August 20, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 20, 2025 By: Winnie Kasmir Text Size: Suhaimi said he had raised this matter during the winding-up session of the State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister at the First Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 16th Sabah State Assembly. SANDAKAN: Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir has called for the immediate introduction of direct international flights to Sandakan to boost the tourism industry and the local economy in Sabah's east coast. He said Sandakan is already well-known as an eco-tourism destination with major attractions such as the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Gomantong Caves, marine life-rich islands and tropical rainforests recognised as global treasures. Advertisement 'I was very encouraged by the remarks of the Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, who said that Sandakan's tourism products are entirely nature-based. 'Next year we will celebrate Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Unfortunately, Sandakan has not been prioritised from the beginning of this year as a tourism hub,' he said. Suhaimi said he had raised this matter during the winding-up session of the State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister at the First Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 16th Sabah State Assembly. The Sabah Umno Information Chief also emphasised that Sandakan's main weakness lies in its limited flight connectivity, noting that flights from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan remain too few. 'Flights from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan are only twice daily, even though nearly half the passengers on board are tourists. 'More worrying is that Sandakan still does not have direct international flights, making it difficult for foreign tourists to come here. 'In 2018, Sandakan was already allocated for direct international flights, but until today this has not been realised. I want to know what plans the State Government and Ministry have to ensure this truly becomes a reality,' he said. Suhaimi said introducing direct international flights to Sandakan was crucial as it would not only open wider access to international tourism markets but also boost economic opportunities for the people on Sabah's east coast. 'Sandakan must be made the main gateway for tourists entering the east coast of Sabah. 'I urge the State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, together with the Transport of Malaysia Ministry, to act immediately to ensure direct international flights to Sandakan are established in the near future,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysia targets high-value tourists for Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will continue focusing advertising and promotional efforts on attracting high-value tourists while maintaining initiatives for volume tourism under the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign. Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said claims that his ministry was solely focusing on potential tourists from China were inaccurate. He stressed that efforts to attract international visitors also involved various other countries. He added that a comparison of foreign tourist arrivals between January and July 2024 and 2025 for 10 countries showed a significant increase. 'Tourist arrivals from Singapore in 2025 rose by 25.5% to 10,288,256, compared with 8,397,886 in 2024; Indonesia increased by 8.2% to 2,197,288 from 2,031,111; China grew by 35.6% to 2,178,857 from 1,607,413; and India recorded a 26.6% rise to 807,664 from 638,109. 'We are not only focused on promoting the country's tourism to China; we also aim to attract high-end and high-spending tourists,' he said when winding up the debate on the motion on the 13th Malaysia Plan for his ministry. Tiong said all advertising and promotional efforts for VM2026 had been strategically planned and implemented across major markets, despite a lack of allocation. He urged all parties, including Members of Parliament, to support efforts to promote the country's tourism and refrain from politicising or sensationalising the initiative. He said the Ministry of Arts, Tourism and Culture continued to focus on all tourism segments, including Muslim-friendly tourism, which offered significant potential. He said MOTAC, through the Islamic Tourism Centre, was committed to developing and promoting Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality, highlighting Quran-based tourism with main attractions such as the Nasyrul Quran Complex in Putrajaya and Yayasan Restu in Shah Alam. 'ITC has also carried out a tourism promotion mission to four major countries, namely China, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, as part of efforts to boost Muslim tourist arrivals, particularly ahead of VM2026,' he said. Meanwhile, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the government encouraged 'pondok' institutions catering to the elderly to register as Senior Citizens Activity Centres to enable them to receive appropriate government support and assistance. She said that although the pondok education system provided lifelong learning opportunities for the elderly, the government could only channel assistance if the institution was officially registered as a PAWE. 'We have advised operators of the pondok schools to establish PAWEs. Once registered, they will be responsible for any activities they undertake and can apply for assistance from the ministry. 'We cannot provide any assistance if they are not registered with us as PAWEs,' she said, addressing an interjection by Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff. Siti Zailah highlighted the need for the pondok education system to be recognised as part of the Action Plan for Senior Citizens 2030, as many elderly individuals choose to stay at these institutions to acquire knowledge.
