Chef names one ingredient that must be added to steak before cooking and it's not salt

Chef Mike Alfarah, who shares cooking videos on social media, decided to put a controversial hack to the test - and was pleasantly surprised by the results
Steak is not a budget-friendly cut of meat. It's typically more expensive and indulgent, so we all want to ensure we're cooking it properly. Luckily, there are professional chefs who are happy to share their top tips and secrets. One such culinary expert is Mike Alfarah, known on Instagram as alfskitchen_.

After learning about a revolutionary ingredient that can elevate steak to new heights, he decided to try it out himself. However, his novel method has sparked some debate online. The contentious ingredient is mayonnaise, which you should spread on the steak before searing it.

The chef stated: "Even though I've heard of this hack a few times, I'm not really a mayo fan but in the name of steak science, it's only right we give it a try!" Mike then showed the steps involved in his steak preparation, which includes a liberal sprinkling of salt and placing the steak in a vacuum-sealed bag. As for the cooking, he immerses it into what he calls his 'meat Jacuzzi'.
This refers to a sous vide or precision cooker, which circulates warm water around the vacuum-packed food and maintains a steady temperature. Using one can minimise the chance of overcooking the meat, reports the Express.
After two hours in its 120 degree bath, the steak gets pulled out and patted dry before facing what purists might call sacrilege - getting smothered on both sides with a generous layer of mayonnaise, then seared in a scorching hot pan to achieve a perfect crust.

The food enthusiast explained: "I'm pretty confident this is going to work really well because mayo is fat and that's the key to a good sear and you better believe I'm going to use that fat from the mayo [in the pan] to baste the steak as well.
He continued: "From the looks of it, we have a pretty perfect sear and again I'm not surprised that this worked really well but I am really curious. Did it affect the taste?".
Mike's hunch proved spot on - the steak was absolutely delicious. He revealed to his followers: "Not only did that give a perfect sear but it tastes incredible."
Watchers were gobsmacked by Mike's bizarre method. One person wrote: "I would not use mayo.. no way on a good piece of meat", whilst another threatened to report the chef to Gordon Ramsay.
Meanwhile, another doubter declared: "Steak cooked in water like that is disgusting in my opinion." Mike tackled the backlash directly, however. He informed the doubter that sous vide preparation is standard practice in top restaurants.
Therefore, it's probable many of us have enjoyed a sous vide steak without knowing it. His clip did spark enthusiasm amongst some viewers. One fan declared: "Yes trying it. Works on chicken and grilled sandwiches, too!".

Justin has been accused of 'hardly singing' and relying too heavily on the crowd, with many branding his performances 'lazy'. After one particular show in Tbilisi, Georgia, on July 23, a wave of support also emerged on social media, with fans urging the pop icon to rest. 'I can't believe it's almost over! Going to miss you so much, but I know you are TIRED!!! So rest up good and we can do it all over again!' one person wrote. Another added: 'I saw you in Atlanta in November and you were amazing. Best concert I've been to. I think you just need a break and to recharge. You've been doing this tour for a year.' But not everyone was so forgiving. Disgruntled ticket-holders continued to vent frustration online, asking: 'Why he treating performing like a side job?!' and 'How many words did you sing?' A third asked: 'Did he sing finally?' while a fourth fumed: 'When are the audience getting paid for their performance?' One more raged: 'Imagine paying $600 to watch the crowd at a Justin Timberlake concert sing his songs.' One viral post, which racked up hundreds of thousands of likes read: 'Justin Timberlake really thought he could do the bare minimum & get away with it? Nicky Byrne shares video from Justin Timberlake "Nah. People didn't drop $500 to watch a lifeless karaoke act. No energy, no vocals, just vibes gone wrong. "The crowd walking out says it all. It's mediocre performance. It's time to stop!' It's not the first time in the tour that Justin's left his fans upset. Back in February, he caused a furore after canceling one of his gigs just moments before being due to perform. 4 He is due to wrap up The Forget Tomorrow World Tour on 30 July Credit: Getty 4 He has come under fire in recent months for 'embarrassing' and lacklustre shows Credit: Getty 4 Justin has been accused of 'hardly singing' and relying too heavily on the crowd Credit: Instagram Wrapping up his tour at Columbus, Ohio's Nationwide Arena, Justin failed to show up and canceled at the very last minute - leaving concert goers feeling sad and angry. "You guys, I'm heartbroken, I have to cancel the show tonight," Justin penned in a statement that shared the reason why he wouldn't be taking to the stage. The SexyBack hitmaker then said: "I went into soundcheck battling the flu and now it's gotten the best of me. "It kills me to disappoint you and my team who worked so hard to make this show happen. "I want to reassure you, you'll be getting refunds for your tickets. I love you all." And, last October, Justin canceled a show in Newark, New Jersey, just hours before the gig. Later in the month, the pop star pulled the plug on a further SIX shows when he was struck down with laryngitis and bronchitis. One person due to attend the N*Sync star's Ohio concert this week has shared a video on X of fans in their droves departing the venue. "Everyone leaving Nationwide Arena because Justin Timberlake cancelled the LAST tour date after already rescheduling from October. 10 minutes before the opener and after doors opened," the person wrote. Someone replied to the video with their own first hand experience, saying: "Bought almost 40 bucks in drinks tonight, was sitting in our seats, we thought the announcement was a joke. "Paid 20 dollars in parking and now 2 vacation days wasted on this." 'UNACCEPTABLE' Elsewhere online, another person addressed the cancelation in a seething message: "Canceling [because] of being sick is 100% understandable.. Canceling 10 minutes before the doors were to open is unacceptable." A second person echoed: "The show was canceled at 7:30 and the show was supposed to start at 8:00, I'm sorry if you have the flu you would've know before 1/2hour before the show starts. "There were little kids standing in line that was devastated that you canceled. "Shame on you." Gemma Owen stuns in an all-white ensemble as she enjoys a rare family outing with mum Louise and dad Michael at Goodwood Festival

Gemma Owen turned heads in an all-white ensemble as she enjoyed a rare family outing with her proud parents Michael and Louise at Goodwood Festival on Tuesday. The Love Island star, 22, looked incredible in a crisp white blouse tucked into a A-line maxi skirt. She added inches to her slender frame with a pair of black heels and shielded her eyes with chic black sunglasses. Her mum Louise, who married footballer Michael in 2005, looked elegant in a light blue lace co-ord. She added a pair of silver open-toe heels and accessorised with silver jewellery. Meanwhile dad Michael put on a dapper display in a navy blue suit paired with a blue shirt and brown shoes. The family all appeared in high spirits as they beamed at the camera while entering the venue. Her outing comes it was revealed in February that Gemma has been setting up her own home since moving out of her family's £4million mansion. In a string of Instagram posts, Gemma revealed her bedroom and kitchen have been transformed, with a muted new décor. One video showed the before and after of her newly-renovated kitchen which is packed with grey appliances, and gold accents and fixtures. Her living room and bedroom continued with the all-grey theme, including metallic blinds, cabinets and matching satin pillows. However, Gemma faced backlash from some users online, after revealing that the renovation was part of a collaboration with a well-known design company, meaning it's likely she didn't pay a penny for the work. In exchange, Gemma promoted the company on her Instagram page, writing: 'Cottage kitchen reno… 'I'm so in love with my kitchen transformation by the incredible team at @prestigedesignyorkshire who have shared my excitement for the project throughout. I'm so happy with the glow up, it's everything that I wanted & more. @prestigedesignyorkshire.' Prior to moving into her cottage, Gemma had been living with her parents at their £4 million mansion in the Welsh countryside (pictured together at the house in 2022) Gemma, who rose to fame on Love Island also shared videos of her new bedroom, while gushing over the luxurious new blinds and curtains she received from Dutch Limes Oak flooring. The clip revealed the star's enormous bed, alongside a sleek, white built-in wardrobe. Prior to moving into her cottage, Gemma had been living with her parents at their £4 million mansion in the Welsh countryside. Ahead of her first stint on the show she admitted that her England legend father 'wasn't happy' about her signing up but he trusted her not to 'embarrass' him. The swimwear brand owner told MailOnline at the time that Michael resisted having a 'tantrum' after learning she will be on the dating show, and eventually gave his blessing, saying: 'I'm not going to tell you what to do.' She said: 'I still wouldn't say that my dad is buzzing about me doing Love Island. 'He's very supportive in whatever I decide to do. He didn't have a massive tantrum or anything like that. 'He was pretty chilled, he trusts me not to do anything to embarrass him. He took it quite well. 'He didn't say I couldn't do this or give me any dos or don'ts. He said I'm not going to tell you what to do, I trust you, you have never given us a reason not to trust you, go for it but I will always have my family's thoughts and opinions in the forefront of my mind because we are all super close and they are the most important people to me.'

Inside Sydney Sweeney's grueling exercise and diet regime as star sizzles in swimsuit alongside mystery man

Sydney Sweeney turned heads this weekend as she soaked up the sun in a swimsuit during a lakefront getaway in northern Idaho. The 27-year-old actress was seen cozying up to a mystery man, sharing playful moments and stepping away from her group of friends and family to spend some alone time with him. While some fans were left wondering who her potential new beau is, many have also been marveling at her sculpted physique. Sweeney, who is set to star as former professional boxer Christy Martin in upcoming biopic titled Christy, proudly flaunted her figure that is the result of a disciplined workout routine and diet. So how exactly did she achieve her toned look? Sweeney has always had an active streak, and has credited much of her natural athleticism to her outdoorsy upbringing. 'I grew up on the water, always running around in a bikini,' she previously told Elle. 'If I wasn't swimming in the lake or the ocean, I was skiing or attempting to surf.' Summers, she explained to Women's Health, have always played a transformative role in her physique. 'I see such a change in my body after an entire summer. My arms are stronger and more sculpted. My abs are rock solid.' But her natural athleticism doesn't stop with seasonal activities. The actress also has a background in mixed martial arts (MMA), a sport she took seriously enough to compete in - and win. 'I did competitions and I got first place fighting all guys,' she once revealed to Kelly Clarkson. But lately, Sweeney's fitness game has reached a new level, thanks to intense preparation for Christy. 'I've been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman - a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring,' she shared in an Instagram post. 'Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope.' In an interview with W magazine, she explained that while training for the role of Christy, her body became completely different. 'I loved it,' she said. 'I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.' Because of this intense routine, she went up four clothes sizes. 'My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, "Oh my God." But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong,' she said. And when she isn't training to play the most successful female boxer of the 90s, she likes to stay fit through Pilates and other similar exercises. 'I like this place called SolidCore. It's a full-body high-intensity workout but on a reformer, and it's been killing my ass. I love it,' she told WSJ Magazine. The star also emphasized the physical and emotional benefits of the practice, telling Women's Health, 'It just makes me feel so toned and strong, but also elongated, and I feel so good doing that.' As for her diet? It's not as intense as you would expect. 'I love a good bowl of berries and some eggs and a bagel,' she said to Women's Health of her go-to breakfast. She explained that she loves being on the water and noticed that during the summer, her body is at its most toned Lunch is often 'something hearty,' which to her can either mean a chicken Caesar salad or even a cheeseburger. Dinner usually depends on where she is, but one cuisine always stands out: 'I love Italian… Italian's usually my go-to for dinner,' she admitted. Despite the demands of her career, Sweeney doesn't restrict herself too harshly. 'It's important to eat,' she explained. 'I definitely one day will probably start eating healthier, but I work out and I'm so active, so I'm able to balance that out. But I love food and it makes me happy.' That love for food definitely includes sweets. 'I love my sugar. I love my candy. I love my cookies and ice cream,' she admitted. 'I'll randomly find some Sour Patch Kids or some peanut M&M's,' she said. Interestingly, despite seemingly doing everything all at once, she's never turned to coffee for energy. She also loves doing outdoor sports like skiing 'I've never even tried coffee,' she previously told Bustle. Instead, she relies on sugar when she needs a pick-me-up, including Swedish Fish or 'anything gummy.' And when it comes to drinks, she keeps it simple. 'I just identify as just a water person… I never really think about alcohol, to be honest.' She explained that since her tween years, she's stayed on top of her hydration. 'Ever since I was 12 years old, I was like, "I'm just going to drink water." And I love it.' She's also partnered with flavored water brand Bai to add a little variety.
