PM Modi slams RJD-Congress for 'insulting' Ambedkar; warns against 'jungle raj'
New Delhi: Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
, speaking at a rally in Bihar's Siwan on Friday criticised the Rashtriya Janata Dal (
RJD
) and
Congress
over the recent controversy involving an alleged insult to
B.R. Ambedkar
's picture by Lalu Prasad. Modi asserted that both parties have consistently disrespected Ambedkar, citing his opposition to dynastic politics and his advocacy for the downtrodden. He further underlined that the two allies are trying to bring back the '
jungle raj
' that preceded
Nitish Kumar
's chief ministership.
The PM inaugurated and laid foundation stones for various projects worth ₹5,200 crore in Siwan. Ahead of the Assembly polls due in October-November in Bihar, Modi stated that the double-engine government under JDU Chief Nitish Kumar has brought all-round development to the state. He emphasised that during his just-concluded visit to Canada for the G7 summit, leaders of developed nations expressed admiration for India's progress towards becoming the third-largest economy.
Slamming RJD and Congress on the Ambedkar controversy, Modi said, "The spirit of our Constitution is that everybody in the country should get the opportunity to progress and there is no discrimination against anybody. We also say with the same feeling -'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' (Collective efforts, inclusive growth). But the 'Laltain' (lantern) and 'Panja' (hand) walas say - 'Parivar ka Saath, Parivar ka Vikas' (Family's efforts, family's growth). This is the gist of their politics -for ensuring gains to their families, they do not hesitate to harm the interests of crores of families in Bihar and the country." (Laltain is the party symbol of RJD while Panja is the election symbol of the Congress.)
He stated that Ambedkar himself was strongly opposed to this kind of politics, and hence RJD and Congress have insulted him at every step.
"The whole country has seen how RJD leaders have treated a photo of Baba Saheb. I saw posters have come up in Bihar demanding that they apologise for this insult to Baba Saheb, but I know they will never apologise, as in their hearts they have no respect for Dalits, Mahadalits, backward, and most backward communities," he said.
Live Events
Prasad, who is ailing and mostly rests his legs on a couch while sitting, was embroiled in a controversy when a party supporter placed a photo of Baba Saheb close to his feet.
BJP
and JDU have been demanding an apology from RJD for this perceived insult to the Dalit leader.
Accompanied by Nitish Kumar and other BJP-JDU leaders on the dais, the Prime Minister launched a scathing attack on the RJD, recalling the 15-year rule under Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi.
He cautioned that RJD and Congress are seeking another opportunity to bring "jungle raj" to the state and appealed to the people of Bihar to protect their future by keeping "miles away from such forces which seek to put brakes on development." He termed the policies of RJD and Congress as "anti-Bihar and anti-investment."
Later, at another rally in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, to mark one year of the BJP government in the state, the PM underlined that the dispensation is working tirelessly day and night for the welfare of all sections, especially tribals and backward communities.

Refused Trump invite as I had to visit land of Jagannath: PM Modi
US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi (File Image) BHUBANESWAR: PM Modi Friday said he had to say 'no' to US President Donald Trump's invitation to drop by in Washington on his way back from Canada, where he had gone for the G7 summit, as he did not want to miss his scheduled visit to the "land of Lord Jagannath", reports Ashok Pradhan. While Majhi's first anniversary as CM was on June 12, the Odisha govt timed the main celebration on Friday in sync with the PM's schedule. Any change in plan could have put the govt in an awkward position in a state where BJP swept the Lok Sabha polls, winning 20 of the 21 seats, and stormed into office by winning 78 of the 147 assembly seats. Speaking at a rally in Bhubaneswar to mark one year of Mohan Charan Majhi-led BJP govt in Odisha, PM Modi said, "The President of United States called me, saying, 'Since you are in Canada, please come over. We will have a meal together and talk.' I thanked him and politely declined, saying that visiting the land of Mahaprabhu (Lord Jagannath) was essential for me. The devotion for Mahaprabhu and your love drew me here." In what was Modi's sixth visit to the state in the past one year, the PM praised Odisha's progress under the BJP govt, emphasising the state's role in India's cultural and economic development. He highlighted initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare, and economic opportunities for the people of Odisha, particularly tribal communities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Attacking the previous Congress regimes, the PM said the party which governed India for decades had neglected the tribal community and "used them merely for political benefits". He said over 125 tribal-dominated districts were affected by Maoists for years. "Most of these districts were declared backward, and the then govts did not take the responsibility to develop them," Modi said. In contrast, the BJP-led govt freed tribal society from Naxal violence, ushering in development in these areas. The PM also highlighted the role of eastern India in the country's growth trajectory. "The development of 21st century India will gain momentum from eastern India. This is the era of Purvodaya."

TMC, BJP spar over Bengal foundation day
Kolkata: Trinamool and BJP clashed on Friday over Bengal foundation day. Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar alleged that police tried to stop a two-wheeler rally led by him from reaching Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's residence on Elgin Road. TMC criticised BJP, saying that the saffron party attempted to force a celebration that lacked spontaneity and with which people have no association. Centre has notified June 20 as statehood day in Bengal. Bengal govt has passed a resolution in the assembly and identified Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year's Day, for celebrating West Bengal Day. The Friday faceoff between activists of BJP Yuva Morcha and the city police took place outside the Bhowanipore residence of Jan Sangh founding member Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, where the workers had assembled to pay their respects to the leader and then planned to reach Netaji Bhavan, a kilometre away, on two-wheelers and on foot. Suvendu Adhikari, state leader of the opposition, earlier led a march of BJP legislators from the assembly premises to the statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee on Red Road, about two kilometres away, and garlanded it. "This is a historic day which we must observe. On this day in 1947, the West Bengal Assembly under the leadership of Syama Prasad Mookerjee passed a resolution to remain in India," Adhikari said. It doesn't matter where a motley band of BJP workers gather and try to force a celebration that lacks spontaneity and with which people have no direct association," said TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh. State parliamentary affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay described it as "politically motivated", pointing out that state govt had already passed a resolution in the assembly and identified Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year's Day, for celebrating West Bengal Day. "Why is BJP suddenly so much worked up on June 20 as Paschimbanga Divas?" he asked.

Trump says intel chief Tulsi Gabbard 'Wrong' on Iran nuclear threat
US President Donald Trump on Friday rejected the assessment of his own intelligence chief, Tulsi Gabbard, insisting that Iran is close to developing a nuclear weapon and dismissing the official US intelligence view as 'wrong.'Trump contradicted intelligence assessments delivered earlier this year by Gabbard, who stated that Tehran was not actively pursuing nuclear weapons. Speaking to reporters at an airport in Morristown, New Jersey, Trump said bluntly:advertisement"She's wrong." The president's remarks marked yet another instance of his public criticism of US intelligence officials. On June 18, during the G7 summit — which he cut short amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran — Trump dismissed agency assessments.'I don't care what she said,' he told reporters, reacting to Gabbard's warning against overestimating Iran's nuclear stance closely mirrors that of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has long warned that a nuclear-armed Iran poses an immediate and existential her March testimony to lawmakers, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard stated that the intelligence community 'continues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon and Supreme Leader Khamenei has not authorized the nuclear weapons program he suspended in 2003.'She also noted that while Iran's enriched uranium stockpile is at its highest recorded level — 'unprecedented for a state without nuclear weapons' — there was still no evidence of a resumed weapons inputs from agenciesMust Watch
