Rob Gronkowski goes off on Giants rookie Abdul Carter's ‘crazy' Lawrence Taylor number request

New York Post04-05-2025

Rob Gronkowski is floored at Abdul Carter's daring request.
The former Penn State pass rusher, whom the Giants took No. 3 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, was in pursuit of Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor's No. 56 jersey to wear for his rookie season.
The bold ask rubbed Gronkowski the wrong way.

'Was he serious asking for LT's number?' the four-time Super Bowl champ said on a recent episode of the 'Dudes on Dudes' podcast he hosts with former Patriots teammate Julian Edelman. 'Yeah you were a high draft pick but LT is an absolute legend. The best to do it. One of the best defenders of all time. Like you gotta prove yourself. That's crazy just asking for LT's number. And I'm glad that LT shut him down like that.'
Gronkowski is referring to Taylor telling The Post's Steve Serby that Carter should use a different number.

'I know he would love to wear that number, but hey, I think it's retired,' Taylor said. 'Get another number, I don't care if it's double zero, and then make it famous.'
'That was such an LT response. Go make your own freaking number kid,' Edelman continued on the podcast. 'Can we read the room? And it's not even the room, it's the football galaxy. The fact that he even asked, that's crazy to me. Maybe he'll go make another one. And people say oh the [No.] 11, the 11 thing. But they give everyone 11 at Penn State but no one ever puts on the 56.'

Carter didn't take the rejection too hard.
'The worst thing he could say was NO!! My stance don't change, LT is the [goat emoji] nothing but respect…,' Carter tweeted a day following Taylor's decision. 'This just gonna make me work even harder!! I love it.'
Carter wore No. 11 at Penn State, the same number worn by former Nittany Lions linebackers LaVar Arrington and Micah Parsons.

The Giants' No. 11 initially wasn't available since it is retired for former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Phil Simms, but the former Giant later said he was open to the idea of un-retiring his number for Carter or the team's other first-round pick, Jaxson Dart.
'I told some of my friends and people around me, 'I'd let him have it in a second. Can you just help it a little or make it better?'' Simms quipped on FanDuel TV. 'I think it would be a lot of fun. It wouldn't bother me.'
Carter jumped at the opportunity, posting on X 'It would be an HONOR,' while tagging Simms with the horns hand emoji.

However, Simms' family outvoted him and his number will remain retired.
'Damn at this point imma be out there with just my last name on my jersey, no number Jkjk, It's all Love. Just wanna play Football!' Carter wrote on X with three crying laughing emojis.
Just a year after the Giants un-retired No. 1 for Malik Nabers following Ray Flaherty's family's approval, Carter is striking out in his own quest.

Vikings Linked as Possible Trade Suitor for Packers Star

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Looking ahead to the 2025 NFL season, the NFC North division once again looks to be the best in football. All four teams in the division will have a shot at making a run to the playoffs. Last year, the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Green Bay Packers all made it to the postseason. Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings are going to be an intriguing team to watch this year. They no longer have Sam Darnold under center, with second-year signal caller J.J. McCarthy set to take over the reigns at quarterback. There are also some questions marks on the defensive side of the football, especially at the cornerback position. Read more: Vikings Urged to Pursue Trade for Star Cornerback If the Vikings were planning to bring Gilmore back, it seems likely that they would have done so already. Minnesota should look into options to beef up its secondary. One possible option could be pursuing a trade with the arch-rival Packers. It would be a major shock, but it has been suggested by one NFL analyst. Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports has suggested Minnesota as one of the possible trade destinations for Green Bay star cornerback Jaire Alexander. While he thinks Alexander will remain with the Packers when all is said and done, he name-dropped the Vikings as a possible landing spot. Alexander has been unable to stay on the field over the last two years. In both the 2023 and 2024 campaigns, he has played in just seven games. Read more: Packers Dealt Brutal Honesty About QB Jordan Love Despite that fact, the 28-year-old cornerback was very productive in seven games last season. He recorded 16 tackles, a fumble recovery, two interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and seven defended passes. More than likely, this possible option will not become a reality. Alexander would be a big step towards Super Bowl contention for Minnesota, but Green Bay seems ready to keep him. Even if the Packers were to trade him, would they really send him to the Vikings? Other possible options could include Jalen Ramsey or simply re-signing Gilmore. Either way, it would be best for the defense to add another proven cornerback for the upcoming 2025 season. Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes addresses his flag football status for the Olympics

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes addresses his flag football status for the Olympics One of the most significant news updates following the owners' meetings was the approval of NFL players to participate in flag football at the upcoming Olympics. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed a desire to play two years ago and updated his preference during Thursday's press conference. "It's awesome, honestly. Just to be able to showcase the NFL to the whole world through flag football, but I'll probably leave that to the younger guys," said Mahomes, "I'll be a little old by the time that thing comes around." Each country's National Olympic Committee will select its Olympic roster based on proposals from the respective National Federations. The NFL's ability to send players will likely include some changes to accommodate training camps, but the two-time league MVP won't be interested in 2028. "I know first-hand that the inclusion of flag football in the Olympics has sparked a tremendous amount of excitement among NFL players interested in the chance to compete for their country on the world stage. said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement last week." We are thrilled that they will now have that chance." Mahomes, now a father of three, would be 32 by the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. He could change his mind, but if he could compete, it would be a thrill for Chiefs fans and the league.
