Here's How Different Generations Expect to Respond to Tariff-Driven Price Hikes

A new survey found six in ten consumers wouldn't pay more than 10% in additional costs on products impacted by tariffs.
Younger consumers were more likely to cut their budgets, purchase items before tariffs take effect, or use Buy Now, Pay Later services to contend with price increases.
Older consumers plan to purchase fewer imports if tariffs raise prices. Electronics and clothing were the most likely to be cut from consumers' shopping lists.A new survey found that consumers have limits on tariff-related price increases, and these limits could vary by generation.
Six in ten consumers said they wouldn't pay more than an additional 10% on products impacted by tariffs, according to a survey from e-commerce firm ESW. An even greater majority (70%) said they plan to reduce overall spending once tariffs begin to have an effect. However, the generations are expected to react to tariffs differently.
The report comes as President Donald Trump has placed tariffs on several U.S. trading partners and products, even as some have been adjusted or paused while negotiations take place. Trump has said the move will help reinvigorate U.S. manufacturing and bring in needed tax revenue. However, economists have said that the tariffs could lead to price increases as businesses pass some of the cost of the tariffs onto consumers.
"Rather than alienating customers and risking market share, firms are hoping tariffs are dropped and costs go down," wrote Moody's Economist Matt Colyar on Monday. "This is a short-term salve for consumers who have not yet seen broad-based price hikes in response to U.S. trade policy, but firms indicate it will not be sustained long term."
Younger shoppers were particularly inclined to slow their spending if tariffs push up prices. The survey found that more than three-in-four Millennials, aged 30 to 44, and Gen Zers, aged 18 to 29, said they planned to tighten their belts to combat higher costs from tariffs.
Gen Z shoppers were the most likely to stock up on goods now before tariffs hit, with electronics and grocery purchases being their highest priorities. Over a quarter of Millennials said they would seek Buy Now, Pay Later services to contend with tariff-induced price increases.
Meanwhile, more than half of Baby Boomers, defined as over the age of 60, are looking to purchase fewer imported goods as a result of tariffs.
'Our data finds that younger, Gen Z consumers are far more likely than older Boomers to feel unprepared for price hikes, and have already curtailed their spending in anticipation,' said Eric Eichmann, ESW chief executive officer, in a statement.
Discretionary items are the most likely to be cut from consumers' budgets if tariffs raise their prices, with 68% saying electronic purchases were the most likely to be skipped, followed by clothing and home goods. Groceries and pet supplies were the items that consumers were most likely to keep buying, regardless of how tariffs impact the prices.
'Price-sensitive consumers, especially Millennials and Gen Z, are quick to reassess purchases that can be delayed or substituted,' the report found.

Oil prices fell on Thursday morning, easing back after rallying but hovered around their highest point in two months, as investors eyed escalating tensions in the Middle East and a potential disruption to supply. Brent crude futures (BZ=F) fell 0.9% to $68.31 a barrel, at the time of writing, while West Texas Intermediate futures (CL=F) declined 0.9% at $67.56 a barrel. US president Donald Trump said on Wednesday that some of US personnel were being moved out of the Middle East because "it could be a dangerous place to be". This came following reports earlier in the day that the US was preparing a partial evacuation of its embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. CBS News reported that US officials had been told Israel was ready to launch an operation into Iran and that the US anticipated Iran could retaliate on certain American sites in Iraq. In a press briefing on Wednesday, Iran's defence minister Aziz Nasirzadeh said: "Some officials on the other side threaten conflict if negotiations don't come to fruition. If a conflict is imposed on us ... all US bases are within our reach and we will boldly target them in host countries." Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said that oil prices remain near a two-month high "driven by rising US-Iran tensions and fears of supply disruptions. At the same time, optimism about energy demand grew after the US and China reached a trade framework, and US crude stockpiles fell more than expected, signalling strong consumption." Gold prices jumped on Thursday morning, as Middle East tensions buoyed demand for the safe-haven asset. Gold futures (GC=F) surged nearly 1% to $3,376 per ounce at the time of writing, while the spot gold price advanced 0.1% to $3,359.49 per ounce. The precious metal is considered to be a safe haven asset, in acting as a hedge amid political and economic uncertainty. Britzman said: "Gold was another winner, with its safe-haven appeal gaining traction amid rising Middle East tensions and softer US inflation data, which gave a modest boost to expectations for rate cuts." Read more: UK economy shrinks by 0.3% in April Data released on Wednesday showed that the US consumer prices index (CPI) rose by 0.1% month-on-month, which was below April's 0.2% rise and lower than economists' estimates of a 0.2% monthly gain in prices. On an annual basis, CPI rose 2.4% in May, a slight uptick from April's 2.3% gain, which marked the lowest yearly increase since February 2021. Investors were also monitoring the latest trade developments, after Trump said in a social media post on Wednesday afternoon that Washington's deal with China is "DONE, SUBJECT TO FINAL APPROVAL WITH PRESIDENT XI AND ME". The pound rose slightly against the dollar (GBPUSD=X) on Thursday morning, up 0.2% to $1,3571, despite a bigger than expected contraction in UK economic growth. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that the UK's gross domestic product (GDP) — the standard measure of an economy's value — shrank by 0.3% in April, which was more than the 0.1% contraction expected by economists. The fall followed growth of 0.2% in March and a 0.7% rise in GDP in the first quarter. This latest economic data comes a day after chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered the UK spending review, sharing details of governmental department budgets for the next few years. Key announcements included a £29bn per year increase in funding for the NHS, while the government's defence budget is set to increase from 2.3% to 2.6% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) from 2027. Reeves also shared details of a £39bn boost to funding for affordable housing and £15.6bn for transport projects in England's largest city regions outside of London. "Rachel Reeves has said she is determined to deliver growth, and her spending plans have been given a cautious welcome by business groups up and down the country — but the caution speaks volumes," she said. In other currency moves, the pound fell 0.4% against the euro (GBPEUR=X), trading at €1.1743 at the time of writing. The main reason for the rise is positive news about a possible trade deal between China and the US, though no final agreement has been reached yet. At the same time, talks with Iran over its nuclear program have not made much progress. If the negotiations fail completely, there is a risk of military conflict, which often pushes oil prices higher. Adding to the upward pressure, US oil inventories fell more than expected for the third month in a row. Looking at the different parts of the ongoing tariff war, the situation with China seems to have the biggest impact on financial markets, including oil. The latest statement says that the deal is almost complete, but both Donald Trump and Xi Jinping still need to sign it. Given how quickly things can change, nothing is certain yet. Still, the market is already hoping for a return to normal trade, especially for semiconductors and rare earth metals, which appear to be the key negotiating points for both countries. A revival in trade and a stable long-term deal would help GDP growth, which would also increase demand for oil. Yesterday's decision to withdraw some staff from the US embassy in Baghdad is a bad sign for the US-Iran talks on stopping Iran's nuclear program in exchange for easing Western sanctions. People involved in the talks say that Iran is demanding more, and although negotiations are still ongoing, the chances of a deal look slim. In the worst case, the US could launch strikes on Iran's nuclear sites. If that happens, Iran may retaliate, and the conflict could spread across the region, pushing oil prices much higher. Last month, OPEC+ announced a production increase of 310,000 barrels per day but managed to raise output by only 180,000 barrels. Key producers, led by Saudi Arabia, were unable to boost production as planned. Combined with falling US oil inventories, this points to a possible, at least short-term, shortage of crude on the global market, especially if trade activity and GDP growth in the US pick up. WTI crude oil has broken through the resistance level around $65 per barrel, opening the way for further gains. The next target for buyers is the supply zone near $72 per barrel, which is where a strong downward move started in early April. Any possible pullbacks are likely to face support near the intersection of the rising trend line and the previously broken resistance, which now acts as support. An HP president says AI isn't coming for everybody's job, only the jobs of people who don't learn to use it

With the rise of AI, many employees and recent graduates are concerned about their job futures. Faisal Masud, president of HP Digital Services, shares his advice for how fresh grads can leverage AI. He also shares how, with the right mindset and upskilling, people can turn AI into a great sidekick. If you're a recent graduate, you're probably feeling some anxiety about entering the workforce. Employees — especially Gen Zs — report feeling burned out, while return-to-office mandates are affecting people's work-life balance. And as CEOs bluster about AI wiping out half of all entry-level white collar jobs, employees and soon-to-be employees naturally feel concerned for their future. It's often said that millennials grew up with smartphones, and in a similar way, today's grads are getting in on the ground floor with AI. When I graduated from college in the 90s, most people in the workforce could barely use the internet, so my generation thrived because we were fluent in the online world. In a similar way, it's early enough for fresh grads to be a part of this first wave of AI use. AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all provide free options, and you can gain a competitive advantage by learning to use them now. But AI isn't coming for everybody's job — it's coming for the jobs of people who don't learn to use AI. I feel confident that AI will make work more rewarding and enjoyable if you give it the opportunity. AI won't be leading a meeting with your biggest client anytime soon, or finalizing the plans for your spring offsite, or hiring the next VP of sales. Despite CEOs arguing that AI will take over entry-level work, enterprises are not ready to roll AI out across the entire organization. Instead, AI will help by doing the tedious parts of your job that you don't enjoy, freeing you up for more meaningful work. You'll still lead your client meeting, but an AI tool will crank out a draft of the presentation and summarize the meeting notes afterward. You'll still make the important decisions about your offsite, but AI will find you 20 locations to choose from — and email them all to check for availability. In this way, AI operates much more like an assistant than a new colleague who you'll have to compete with to keep your job. Your intelligence, judgment, and awareness will remain indispensable for this type of work. So yes, AI may be taking components of entry-level work, but it's not eliminating job opportunities entirely; it's evolving what entry-level work looks like. This kind of automation will allow you to gain more high-quality work experience early in your career, leading to faster growth and career advancement. Tech has a history of creating more jobs, not fewer, and AI is no different. Now is the time to start learning and using AI tools to get ahead of the curve. Forget generic résumés that get lost in the pile; AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini can dissect job descriptions, pinpoint essential keywords, and supercharge your résumé and cover letter so that they make it past automated screening systems. AI tools can also generate realistic mock interview questions to assist with interview preparation. Think of AI as a 24/7 career assistant. Powerful AI agents like OpenAI's Operator function can even scan job boards and submit applications on your behalf. These capabilities are still emerging, but the outcome is that you'll be able to expand your job search and apply for many more roles with precisely targeted applications. Just don't over-index on your AI use. If you use AI to spruce up your cover letter, read closely to ensure it's accurate and still sounds like you and doesn't exaggerate your capabilities. Otherwise, you run the risk of falling short of expectations when potential employers meet you in person, or winding up in a job where you're out of your depth. AI will also streamline the tech experience at work. I often think about how good the tech experience has become in our personal lives. My smartphone updates in the background and connects automatically to my TV and car. AI-powered apps like Uber and DoorDash have made my life so convenient that I take them for granted. But tech in the workplace hasn't kept up. For example, I was about to join a board meeting recently when my videoconferencing system decided to install an update. Last month, I was building a presentation when the software crashed without saving my last changes. AI will analyze the experience of millions of users and learn when it's the best time to update your Zoom (hint: it's not right before a meeting). It'll also recognize that your computer is slowing down and automatically alert the IT department to fix or replace it, saving you the hassle. In addition, AI will handle interactions with internal departments like IT, HR, and payroll. You won't have to waste time submitting expense reports, filing tickets, or asking questions about benefits and leave policies. These are all tasks that will be made faster and easier with AI. If your company dumps a new set of technologies onto you when you're already feeling overwhelmed, it's likely to cause frustration rather than make your job easier. Here's how you can get the most out of AI tools and actually look forward to using them: Ask questions about how AI will impact your role. Don't wait for clarity — be proactive and find out how these tools will affect your day-to-day tasks and long-term career. Identify how AI can enhance your workflows. Look for ways these tools can save time, reduce manual effort, or improve decision-making. Your goal should be to build a reliable, repeatable motion that can scale. Take charge of your learning. Invest time in mastering the tech's capabilities and understanding its limitations. You can accelerate learning through experimentation, trial and error, and by using GenAI tools. Stay informed about your company's goals and AI strategy. Pay attention to leadership's messaging and align your efforts with how AI tools are being positioned to support the company's objectives. Advocate for transparency and collaboration. If something isn't clear or feels off, speak up. An open dialogue with your manager can help ensure these tools benefit both you and the organization. AI isn't here to replace you—it's here to help you thrive. With the right mindset and a little upskilling, you can turn it into your ultimate sidekick, simplifying tasks and freeing you to focus on what truly matters: creativity, big ideas, and making an impact.
