Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer turned down chance to be college football team's GM
Despite former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer being out of college football now for over six years, it seems like his name still comes up when there are vacancies in the college game. His stint in the NFL was so bad that he'll likely never get a chance to prove himself at the highest level again, but he's still one of the best college football head coaches in the history of the game.
These days, Meyer is working as an analyst with Fox Sports' "Big Noon Kickoff," but he also appears on his podcast, the "Triple Option," to discuss all things college football with some of his Fox College Football hosts. This past week, Meyer dove into a discussion about the future of college football with all the changes we've seen, and he let loose some little-known information. According to Meyer, he was approached by a college football team to be their General Manager, handling some of the business surrounding the new pay models and such that the sport is now working through.
'I don't know if I even told Rob (Stone) and Mark (Ingram) this, but I had a school come see me this year and ask if I wanted to be the GM,' Meyer said. 'And a couple other phone calls. And you start to think, 'OK, they actually came to see me,' so I said, 'Yeah, I'll meet and I'll sit down with you guys.''
Sounds intriguing, but also under the radar. So, why didn't we hear more about this? Well, according to Meyer, it was mainly the job description he wanted no part of.
'I said, 'OK, what is the job description?' They said, 'Well, basically you meet with all the agents of the 17-, 18-year-olds,'' Meyer said. 'And I thought, 'I'd rather step on a rusty nail and pull it out myself.'
Ouch. Suffice it to say, we won't see Meyer in that capacity anytime soon. We'd all also like to know what school approached the three-time national championship-winning coach, but he didn't divulge that information. Too bad, but if Meyer doesn't want that type of job, I mean, who else would? It's a brave new world in college football, and Meyer -- and many others -- likely want nothing to do with the headaches that come from all the things that go into paying players, and we don't blame them one bit.

Joey Bosa was a big-name addition this offseason, and Greg Rousseau is a top-tier rusher, but adding Parsons would take this defense to the next level,' Edholm wrote. 'When the Bills have needed a crucial defensive stop in several key games the past few years, especially in the playoffs, they have come up short more often than not. Adding one more elite defender could be the difference between a title and another missed opportunity for one.' Buffalo's defense has fallen short in clutch moments for years, and Parsons could be the missing piece that finally gets them over the hump. A move like this would be a dream scenario for Josh Allen and could instantly elevate the Bills into Super Bowl favorites.

Steelers wrap up final practice of training camp at Saint Vincent College
Training camp at Saint Vincent College is a wrap for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Aaron Rodgers was on the field for the Steelers on Tuesday. His leg needed to be wrapped but he did practice and head coach Mike Tomlin said it was nothing significant. Rodgers said he had a blast at the Saint Vincent training camp experience, not just working on various parts of the game plans, but also getting to know the new group of teammates. The veteran quarterback also had some high praise for some of the skill players he'll be playing alongside coming up this fall. "I think I'm playing a little bit better," Rodgers said. "I feel comfortable in the offense and DK and I have been getting on the same page a little more frequently, which helps. You know, we've had some injuries, obviously. Calvin's been out for a while, so we'd love to get him back, but it gives opportunities for other guys. I think Scotty's done a nice job and made a lot of plays for us. I think Roman's starting to feel confident in what he's doing. I love the tight ends. I think you're getting a lot of production out of those guys. Again, with Jonnu out, one guy I'd love to single out is Connor. Connor does the right thing every time. He's a really smart football player and the smartest players are the best players, so he's the kind of guy you feel right confident that you can put him in there at any time and know he's gonna be on the same page." Rodgers said he hopes he and his offensive line can be on the same page all season long, too -- in particular with his offensive tackles. Broderick Jones has the assignment of being Rodgers' blindside protector and during the team's first preseason game in Jacksonville, Jones had a solid performance. The offensive line has been a topic of discussion the entire preseason, mainly because it's the first time the starters have been back together on the line in a year and also because there's a level of concern about their size and lack of depth. The line held a clean pocket for quarterback Mason Rudolph on Saturday while facing Jacksonville's starting defense as the Steelers closed out the opening drive for a touchdown. "It was alright," Jones said. "You know, it's always things you can clean up here and there, but for the most part, I thought we were in sync. I think we're starting to gel, just as a whole unit. We've just got to continue to trend in the right way and continue to lock in and focus on the things we can focus on and do what we can and just continue to play football." Jones says he has one main goal for himself this season. "Consistency," Jones said. "That's it, consistency. That's all football is about. If you're able to be consistent in this sport, you'll be alright." Meanwhile, it was confirmed Tuesday that rookie quarterback Will Howard will not need surgery, but is still likely to be out of the lineup until the beginning of the regular season with a broken bone in his hand. Howard, who was having a very solid first camp, says he's trying to make the most out of a bad situation. "It sucks," Howard said. "Every ounce of me wants to be out there playing and I'm just kind of, sitting here doing nothing and it kills me. Especially on something what felt dumb, to me, you know, as a freak accident. Things happen and it's about how you respond to it and how you handle the adversity. I wish I could go back and change it and I wish I could be out there playing, but the fact of the matter is it happened and I've got to continue to stay locked in and make sure I'm still on my stuff and locked in during meetings and during practice and still getting all the mental reps because this time is still important for me and although I'm not getting the physical reps, I need to continue to get the mental reps if I want to continue to on the trajectory that I was on." Keenan Allen returns to Chargers, feeling at home in new facility
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Keenan Allen walked into Los Angeles Charges training camp on Thursday feeling at home, despite a head coach and training facility that were new to him. The six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver got to work two days after signing with the team that drafted him in 2013 after spending last season with the Chicago Bears. 'This is amazing,' he said, gesturing at The Bolt, the team's year-old facility. 'Just happy to be back. This is where I'm supposed to be.' Although Allen said his year in Chicago 'was all love,' he still kept on eye on the Chargers under first-year coach Jim Harbaugh. 'This is more close to home, my family, what I'm used to,' he said. 'The organization, people around the building. Just feel like I'm home.' The Chargers traded Allen to the Bears last offseason for a fourth-round draft pick in a move he believes 'could have been prevented at some point.' He had 70 catches for 744 yards and seven TDs in Chicago. In the free agent market, Allen said he 'got a little downplayed' and that is motivating him. 'I still want to play, still got a little hunger, a chip on my shoulder,' he said. Entering his 13th season, Allen is the second-most experienced player on the roster behind long snapper Josh Harris with 14 years. Allen joins a wide receiver corps that is different than in recent years. Ladd McConkey returns for his second season after breaking Allen's single-season rookie record for catches and yards. 'That was great,' Allen said, before adding with a smile, 'He had a little bit more games.' Allen sees himself fitting in well with McConkey. 'You got two guys who know how to play football and love to play football. I think you can put us anywhere,' he said. 'Last year, he showed he can do it all too. He's elusive, fast, he made a lot of plays.' The Chargers also have Quentin Johnston, Tyler Conklin and rookies Tre' Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith after free agent Mike Williams suddenly retired before the start of training camp. 'The young guys are much better than what I'm used to seeing in training camp this early,' Allen said. 'Their technique, the way they're getting down field, the way they're pressing coverage I think is great.' Allen talks to Williams and said there's 'zero chance' he would unretire. Second-year defensive coordinator Jesse Minter met Allen for the first time before practice. 'Man, it was awesome. So much respect for Keenan, glad we got him back,' he said. 'It's just another weapon that you can tell has a lot of familiarity and comfort with the quarterback. I'm excited to see what he brings to that side of the ball.' Quarterback Justin Herbert made Allen his favorite target in their previous time together, with the 33-year-old wide receiver catching 24 TD passes. 'You got to put the work in. I'm not in football shape. They threw me right in the fire, put the pads on,' Allen said. 'You got to get in there and do it at some point so might as well go out the first day.
