‘It just smelled funny': Uber drivers unwittingly used as drug mules in metro Atlanta

'How are you?' asked a Johns Creek Police officer in body camera video.
'Sorry, my English is not good,' replied the Uber driver.
In the bodycam video, a driver for Uber Courier called 911 in October after a customer asked him to deliver a suspicious package to an apartment in Atlanta.
'It's just that one bag,' said the officer on video.
Investigators said the bag contained marijuana. But that was not an isolated incident.
'It just smelled funny. It just smelled funny,' said an Uber Courier driver who asked us not to use his name due to safety concerns.
He said he doesn't know what is inside the packages he delivers most of the time.

FIRST ON FOX: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Friday lodged an arrest detainer against an illegal immigrant from Lebanon accused of kidnapping his Uber passenger in Texas. Sameh Mohamad Chami, 49, was arrested by Friendswood Police Department on Aug. 6 after allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman while working as an Uber driver, according to a report from affiliate FOX 26 Houston. The 21-year-old victim fell asleep in the backseat of Chami's car after a late night at a Galveston saloon and reportedly woke up in the front seat of his car parked near a school with her shorts unbuttoned. Uber driver 'completely forgot' it was illegal to refuse passengers with guide dogs
AN Uber driver told a court he 'totally forgot' that it was illegal for him to refuse to pick up a customer with a guide dog. Khurram Mukhtar had driven away from the disabled woman who booked his car after refusing to take both her and her dog. He had his licence revoked by Bradford Council following the incident in March. And on Wednesday he appeared in court charged with failing to accept a booking from a person with an assistance dog. The court was shown a video of Mukhtar saying 'no, no, no' before pulling away after the woman who booked the Uber informed him it would be illegal for him to refuse to transport her and her dog. He admitted the charge, telling magistrates he had been 'confused' as to what the law was. Waseem Raja, prosecuting the case on behalf of Bradford Council, said Mukhtar, 44, of Colyton Mount, Allerton, had received a boking to pick up a passenger from the Yorkshire Building Society headquarters at Yorkshire House, off Rooley Lane. The booking was made at 4.38pm on March 4, and Mukhtar's Uber arrived around 10 minutes later. The woman who booked the Uber relied on a guide dog, which was present when the vehicle arrived. Mr Raja said: 'He simply refused to take the dog and refused to take the complainant.' The complainant began recording him on her mobile phone. This footage was shown to Magistrates, and showed the complainant telling Mukhtar 'It is against the law to say no to a guide dog.'. He replied: 'No, no, no. I can't allow dogs. You need to order a pet Uber.' She told him he would be reported, and Mukhtar drove off, leaving the woman and her dog without a way to get home. Mr Raja said the Council received a complaint about his behaviour shortly after and the taxi licensing service began an investigation. Bradford Magistrates Court When they interviewed Mukhtar, he said he had forgotten that it was illegal to refuse to transport a visually impaired person and their guide dog. Mr Raja added: 'She relies on taxis to get her about, and this incident left her feeling quite upset. She feels she was treated unfairly.' He pointed out that you can hear the complainant sigh as the taxi drives off. Mukhtar represented himself in court. When asked to explain his actions, he said: 'I was so confused. 'I forgot you have to take guide dogs. I totally forgot. I know taking a guide dog is very important.' He said he only realised what he had done was breaking the law the following day. 'I've suffered from this. I've got no job' When he was questioned as to why he left a vulnerable woman with a disability at the roadside, he said: 'I was too confused at that time.' Mr Raja pointed out that all drivers are provided with training, which included disability awareness and the responsibilities of drivers in dealing with disabled customers. He added: 'He was only licensed in 2022, so any training should be fresh in his mind.' Responding to this, Mukhtar said: 'I've had no guide dog jobs in that time. I was so confused at the time. I told my friend about it after and he said 'why did you not take that job?'' Magistrates were told that on top of any punishment they issued, Mukhtar's licence had already been revoked. After some deliberation, Mukhtar was fined £80 and ordered to pay a £32 surcharge. The case cost Bradford Council £1,360 to investigate and prosecute, but due to his limited income Mukhtar will only be required to contribute £150 towards those costs. According to the Private Hire Vehicles (Carriage of Guide Dogs etc.) Act 2002, in the UK it is 'It is an offence for the operator of a private hire vehicle to fail or refuse to accept a booking for a private hire vehicle if the reason for the failure or refusal is that the disabled person will be accompanied by his/her assistance dog. 'A person who is guilty of an offence under this section is liable on summary conviction to a fine.'

ICE grabs 7-year-old NYC public school student amid Trump immigration crackdown
Federal immigration authorities have seized a 7-year-old New York City public school student, the youngest-known local school kid to be detained during the second Trump administration. Dayra, an Ecuadorian student at P.S. 89 The Jose Peralta School of Dreamers in Queens, and her mom were separated from her 19-year-old brother during an immigration check-in on Tuesday at 26 Federal Plaza, according to the family and their advocates. Her last name is being withheld as a minor. 'We were all very scared,' Patricio, Dayra's mom's boyfriend who lives with the family, said in Spanish. 'Because we knew they were going to arrest them.' Dayra and her mom, Martha, were shipped off to a detention center in Texas, advocates said. The U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement locator showed Martha as of Friday afternoon at South Texas Family Residential Center, one of the largest immigration facilities in the country. The center was reopened this year after the Biden administration shuttered it. (The locator does not provide information for detainees under 18.) 'She called me yesterday, she told me she was fine. But she is very afraid of returning to Ecuador,' Patricio said of Martha, who fled domestic violence in the country. An immigration judge had previously denied her asylum bid and ordered the family deported, according to court records, but they continued to report to their check-ins as required by law. Dayra's brother, Manuel, 19, was being held at 26 Federal Plaza, before being moved to a detention center in Newark, New Jersey, according to the locator. He recently graduated high school on Long Island and was supposed to start college this year, Patricio said. The Department of Homeland Security, the agency that houses ICE, did not immediately comment. 'We are hearing extremely concerning reports about an immigrant family, including a 7-year-old local public school student and her 19-year-old brother, detained by ICE,' Councilman Shekar Krishnan (D-Queens) said in a statement. 'My office is working actively to obtain all the details. We are in contact with the local school, DOE officials, and federal offices to learn more and fight to make sure the family can be reunited.' 'Family separation is horrific, and ICE must stop these cruel tactics.' In the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens, P.S. 89 hosts a Spanish dual-language program and is in the process of launching a similar program in Bengali, according to school data and social media. More than half of students are learning English as a new language. 'The abuses of the federal government and neglect from City Hall have created an environment of terror for families in the streets of New York,' said Naveed Hasan, an advocate for the city's immigrant students. '7-year-old Dayra is among the youngest children taken by ICE, and if she's not immediately released, our own government will illegally deprive her of her right to learn and thrive with her loving PS 89Q community.' Dayra and Manuel are the latest in a slew of New York students to be swept up in President Trump's deportation agenda, including two young men, Dylan and Mouctar, who attend the city's alternative high schools for students behind on credits. On Thursday, local lawmakers and advocated rallied for their release ahead of the school year, which begins on Sept. 4. The Patchogue-Medford School District, where advocates say Manuel attended high school, did not return a request for comment Friday. Nicole Brownstein, the press secretary for the city's public schools, said the agency has helped connect families with their permission to legal support and other resources. 'New York City Public Schools stands with all of our students, and we are committed to supporting every child and family in our system,' she said.
