Chennai: BJP functionaries and cadres were detained by the police for attempting to hold a protest against DMK MP A Raja for his 'derogatory' remarks about Union home minister Amit Shah.
Condemning the controversial remarks made by Raja at a Dravidar Kazhagam event last month, BJP announced protests at seven places here on Tuesday. When they assembled for protest, police detained them as permission for the agitation was not granted. Slogans demanding the state govt to arrest Raja were raised when the BJP functionaries were detained.
In Saidapet, former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan was detained along with other BJP functionaries.
Addressing reporters, Tamilisai condemned DMK govt and the "police high-handedness". Similarly, in the protest held in Sivananda Salai, police detained BJP men headed by the party's state vice-president Narayanan Tirupathi. The protest in chief minister M K Stalin's Kolathur constituency was led by TN BJP spokesperson A N S Prasad.

"DMK's police brutality has been exposed as opposition parties are silenced and democracy is under threat. This is authoritarian rule where police are loyal to the party and not to the people," Prasad said on X.
Police said that close to 600 party cadres and functionaries including 120 women were detained.

Today in Politics: As PM Modi reaches a milestone, BJP faces 3 key challenges

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to overtake Indira Gandhi and become the PM with the second-longest unbroken stint in the highest elected office in the country. Modi, who is in the United Kingdom on a crucial bilateral visit, completes 4,078 days in office, one more than Indira, who was the PM uninterrupted from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977 While the PM reaches this milestone, his party faces some challenges on the domestic political front. First up is Bihar, where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has added momentum to the Opposition's attempts to corner the NDA government. While the ruling alliance is united in public, concerns have been expressed internally about how the voter verification drive will unfold, given that voters have been confused and have expressed anxiety about the entire exercise, as The Indian Express reported in a recent series from the state. Now, JD(U) MP Giridhari Yadav has become the first NDA parliamentarian to publicly criticise the SIR. While Yadav may not be a political heavyweight, the BJP will hope that cracks do not appear in the Bihar alliance. Opposition RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav has said the party may consider a poll boycott over the SIR, and the Congress Bihar in-charge, Krishna Allavaru, has said 'all avenues are open'. In the context of the Congress and its senior leadership repeatedly raising questions on the integrity of recent electoral processes, whether this turns into a serious option for the Mahagathbandhan will be one of the political stories to watch out for on Friday and the days to come. In all likelihood, this will end up playing into the hands of the BJP and give it breathing space to manoeuvre and counterattack the Opposition when it must be feeling the heat in Bihar. The second challenge for the BJP is managing the optics following the surprising resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice-President earlier this week. Though the jury is out on why Dhankar stepped down so suddenly, Neerja Chowdhury writes in her latest column that the BJP won't be happy with the fact that it has to admit that it could not manage someone it had chosen for the second-highest Constitutional post. Third, the BJP faces a tough test in less than a year in West Bengal, one of the states where the SIR is expected to cause a political upheaval if held. Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee has already declared she won't allow the exercise in the state, saying it will lead to the exclusion of genuine voters. The TMC chief has also instructed her party to start mobilising on the issue of detention of Bangla-speaking migrants in various BJP-ruled states. At her Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata on July 21, Banerjee targeted the BJP as an anti-Bengali party allegedly hounding Bangla speakers and labelling them as Bangladeshis. She alleged the BJP had unleashed 'linguistic terrorism' on Bangla speakers and announced that starting July 27, the party would hold protests each weekend to protest this injustice. She reiterated her message on Thursday. The narrative built around Bengali pride and painting it as a party of outsiders had proved costly for the BJP in the 2021 elections and could hurt its chances in next year's elections too. How the party responds to this while maintaining its appeal to its core voter base about being tough on undocumented immigration will be one of the things to watch out for. Also happening today: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will move a resolution in the Rajya Sabha to extend President's Rule in Manipur by six months. The NISHAD Party in Uttar Pradesh will observe bandit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi's death anniversary on Friday by honouring women activists and holding discussions on her 'contribution to the fight for social justice'. — With PTI inputs

TDP MPs urge Centre to supply adequate urea

Guntur: TDP Parliamentary Party leader and Narasaraopet MP Lavu Krishnadevarayalu, along with MPs Kalisetti Appalanaidu and Tenneti Krishna Prasad, met Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda on Thursday in Delhi and submitted a representation seeking immediate redressal of the urea shortage crisis in Andhra Pradesh. During the meeting, MP Krishnadevarayalu sought the Centre's support for the dissemination of urea in adequate, required amounts for the state farmers. In the letter submitted he mentioned, as per the July 2025 Kharif supply plan, the Department of Fertilizers had allocated 1,30,000 metric tonnes (MTs) of urea to Andhra Pradesh. However, by 18th July, only 49,485 MTs had reached the state, including material in transit, leaving a shortfall of 80,515 MTs. He said over 1.16 lakh hectares are under paddy cultivation, and major kharif crops such as groundnut, red gram, cotton, and maize are being sown across 8.21 lakh hectares. The resulting demand-supply mismatch has led to panic buying and market pressure on urea availability. They requested to allot 10,000 MTs from M/s KRIBHCO from their Hazira and Tuticorin port plants, increase the allocation from M/s CIL's vessel expected at Krishnapatnam port from 2,400 MTs to 10,000 MTs, ensure timely delivery of upcoming shipments by M/s CIL in line with the supply plan, allocating 11,000 MTs from the MV MAGDA P vessel of M/s IPL expected at Gangavaram port on 20th July, providing 5,000 MTs from leftover RFCL stock arriving via M/s NFL at Gangavaram port.

Sita temple plan on Shah's Bihar visit agenda on August 8

PATNA: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Bihar's Sitamarhi district on August 8 to lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of the Janki temple at Punaura Dham, the mythological birthplace of Goddess Sita. Shah will address a public meeting during his visit. His visit is part of the BJP's strategy to consolidate its political base ahead of the Assembly elections, especially in the Mithila region. CM Nitish Kumar has also assured the state government's full support in developing Punaura Dham as a religious and tourist destination. Political observers suggest that the timing and the scale of the proposed visit of Shah underscore the BJP's attempt to emotionally engage Maithil communities, including Brahmins, Kayasthas, Vaishyas, and the upper-middle classes, through cultural nationalism. The BJP aims to influence 20-25 Assembly seats in the region by addressing the redevelopment issue. The region has a mixed population of Yadav, Muslim, Kushwaha, Dalit and EBC voters. The redevelopment of Punaura Dham is expected to mirror the scale and symbolism of the Ram temple at Ayodhya. Spread over 12 acres, the temple complex will be constructed in the traditional North Indian Nagar style of architecture, utilising white marble and red sandstone. Outreach The timing and the scale of his visit may underscore the BJP's attempt to emotionally engage Maithil communities.
