Long-standing south Essex restaurant could close if business does not improve

THE owner of one of Hockley's longest-standing restaurants has warned that he could soon be forced to stop operating if business does not improve.
Neil's Bar and Kitchen has been serving residents for the past ten years on the town's Main Road and has adapted several times to weather the storms of an increasingly challenging hospitality industry.
Now, the restaurant's owner, Neil Necati, has said that he is considering closing the venue in its current form by the end of the year.
Passion - Neil and Mary have been running the venue for the past decade (Image: Neil Necati) 'This September will mark Neil's Bar and Kitchen's tenth full year in Hockley and it will also be our last year operating as Neil's Bar and Kitchen,' he said.
'Since the Covid-19 pandemic I haven't taken a salary and we've been cutting as many corners as possible.

'For the first three years that we were trading, business was good, but we were quickly hit by not just the pandemic, but also Brexit and the cost-of-living crisis.'
Having initially launched as an a la carte restaurant in 2015, the venue has since tried several changes to help boost business, but none have been able to turn business around.
Struggle - The businessowner has described the challenges of running an independent venue (Image: Neil Necati) Neil and his partner Mary have explored food delivery and extended breakfast service as well as making their menus more affordable.
Despite accumulating glowing reviews online and developing a loyal customer base, running the venue as a restaurant and bar is no longer a viable option for the couple.
'Continuing as we are no longer sustainable economically, not to mention the impact it has on our family life,' he said.
Popular - The bar has won over residents throughout the last decade (Image: Neil Necati) 'Customer bookings have fluctuated drastically this year and as a small independent business this is a frightening prospect, which we cannot easily ignore.'
The passionate business owner, who has been in the hospitality industry since the age of 13, says he is now in the process of considering what can be done to save the venue.
'We will start making changes in the latter part of the year and hope that we will provide something new for you our customers to enjoy,' he said.

Palmes Wants to Make Tennis Accessible, Starting With an ATP Collaboration

LONDON — Just in time for the U.S. Open taking place in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., from Sunday through Sept. 7, the ATP, otherwise known as the Association of Tennis Professionals, is venturing into the world of apparel. ATP has collaborated with Palmes, the Copenhagen-based contemporary menswear label on a collection of T-shirts, polo tops, tennis shorts, caps and a tote bag with the branding of the two brands, respectively. A wider release with retailers End, Fwrd, Ounass, Kapok, Care of Carl and Illum will launch on Aug. 26. ATP's collaboration with Palmes signals a new chapter in the governing body of the men's professional tennis circuits as interest in the sport rapidly grows. The ATP has a long-standing partnership with Lacoste, which outfits ATP staff and officials, including chair umpires. 'ATP hasn't made merchandise or apparel in a very long time. They did a lot of cool stuff in the '80s and '90s, but it's been kind of dormant. This collaboration is for the fans to get involved and buy the pieces. ATP is a sacred institution, in a good way, because it is the heart of men's tennis and bringing Palmes in, which is very anti-institutional, is an exciting overlap,' said Nikolaj Hansson, founder of Palmes, in an interview. He founded the brand in summer 2021 after becoming interested in tennis during COVID-19 and finding a real passion in the sport. He fell into a YouTube hole of watching videos of Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Billie Jean King and Rafael Nadal. 'I grew up on a skateboard, that was my entire childhood into my early 20s and I realized how many layers of stories there are in tennis and it reminded me a lot of skateboarding. There's so much culture hidden underneath the actual sport and the physical aspect — tennis has been a driver for cultural, social and political change,' said Hansson. He quickly became obsessed with the sport, a tendency he confesses to. Hansson got eight of his best friends involved and they started playing together four or five times a week in the summer. Though he enjoyed the sport, he found it to be missing an emotional link. 'The tennis space was either very retro and nostalgia-driven about what tennis was in the past or it was very performance-driven. There's nothing wrong with either, but I was missing something that I could identify with and was more individualistic,' said Hansson. 'A lot of my friends told me they weren't tennis people because they had this preconceived notion about what tennis was, which is a full white-outfit — that's how tennis is seen in movies, music and popular culture. What we really want to do with Palmes is to show that instead of changing who you are [for tennis], you should change tennis into whatever you're into as an individual,' he added. Hansson's ambition was to make Palmes the bridge that a customer walks across to get into tennis. He takes references from his other interests such as architecture, art and design, then peppers them into the design of the product. He'll even inject some tongue-in-cheek elements sometimes. One T-shirt has 'I'd Hit That' printed on, while a long-sleeve practice top has an illustration of a player rehearsing their serve and a crewneck sweater features a print of a man celebrating after a serve. The product offering ranges from socks and water bottles to tailoring and jackets, with prices starting at 9 pounds for a set of four tennis balls and ranging to 450 pounds for a double-breasted pin-striped blazer. Hansson lives and breathes tennis. He's turned the brand's flagship, which also serves as a studio and showroom space, into a world of tennis. The store opened in November 2024 and he built the whole space from floor to ceiling with hand-sanded polycarbonate doors, which can slide to open and close each area; a curved hitting wall for playing tennis solo; red clay from a tennis court in different display boxes around the space and a wooden frame television to watch live and old tennis matches on. Hansson has used the store to ideate the world of Palmes. 'The store is mostly about presenting the true spirit of the brand without compromise and testing how the brand feels. The goal is to slowly expand [the space] more and to turn the studio space into a coffee shop or wine bar in the next two years,' he said. Right now the focus of the brand is on wholesale and growing its DTC channel, but expanding its retail presence is not something Hansson is ruling out. The brand is stocked at Nordstrom, Selfridges and End. Palmes biggest markets come out of North America, the U.K. and Scandinavia. The pool for playing tennis in Denmark is small compared to the rest of the world. 'There's 24 million people who play tennis in the U.S., but in Denmark it's 80,000. The barrier of entry into tennis is so high,' said Hansson, recognizing the economic cost of getting into tennis as a hobby. For many, tennis can seem like a scary sport that requires a club membership and expensive gear. 'It costs money to play. Whereas, something like running, you can meet 400 people outside and run together, whether it rains or shines. There's so many structural hindrances to playing tennis and then there's the technical side. Tennis is technically difficult and it's not fun for the first 10 times, whereas almost anyone can run or ride a bike,' said Hansson. Palmes wants to respond to those struggles. Last summer, the brand rented out all the courts of a tennis club in Copenhagen every Saturday morning to invite members of the Palmes community to come play free of charge with rackets and coaches on hand for lessons. 'We biked to our store after for coffee and croissants. If you don't have someone to play with you're f––––d and this was a way of growing that [tennis] community,' said Hansson. Wall Street drifts in premarket trading while Target tumbles on sluggish sales and a CEO change

Wall Street continues to drift Wednesday while news of a leadership change at Target took some of the spotlight away from the latest batch of corporate earnings reports. Futures for the S&P 500 were 0.2% lower before the bell, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average inched back just 0.1%. Nasdaq futures fell 0.3%. Target tumbled 9% after the struggling Minneapolis retailer said that CEO Brian Cornell plans to step down Feb. 1. Chief Operating Officer Michael Fiddelke, a 20-year company veteran, will succeed Cornell, who helped reenergize the company but has struggled to turn around weak sales in a more competitive post-COVID retail landscape. Target also reported Wednesday that comparable store sales fell 1.9% in the period, a measure that has been flat or declined in eight out of the past 10 quarters. On the winning side was home improvement retailer Lowe's, which jumped 3.4% after it beat Wall Street's sales and profit expectations. Lowe's also announced that it was acquiring Foundation Building Materials, a distributor of interior building products, for about $8.8 billion. Estee Lauder slid 7.5% after the makeup and beauty company reported an 8% decline in sales in fiscal 2025 and a significant drop in adjusted per-share profit. The week's biggest news for Wall Street is likely arriving on Friday, when Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will give a highly anticipated speech in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The setting has been home to big policy announcements from the Fed in the past, and the hope on Wall Street is that Powell will hint that an interest rate cut is coming soon. The Fed has kept its main interest rate steady this year, primarily because of the fear of the possibility that President Donald Trump's tariffs could push inflation higher. But a surprisingly weak report on job growth across the country may be superseding that. In Europe, France's CAC 40 ticked up 0.2%, while Germany's DAX dipped 0.3%. Britain's FTSE 100 added more than 0.4% despite a report that said inflation in the U.K. rose more than expected through July, in part due to soaring airfares and food prices. Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei 225 declined 1.5% after Japan reported that its exports fell slightly more than expected in July, pressured by higher tariffs on goods shipped to the U.S. Imports also fell from a year ago. Tracking Tuesday's decline by Wall Street favorite Nvidia and other artificial-intelligence stars, Japanese computer-chip equipment makers Advantest plunged 5.7% and Disco Corp. dropped 4.9%. Chipmaker Tokyo Electron lost 1.4%. and Lasertec Corp. lost 1.7%. The Taiex in Taiwan fell 3.0% after chip maker TSMC dropped 4.2%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained nearly 0.2%, while the Shanghai Composite index gained 1.0% after China's central bank opted to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged, as markets had expected. Chinese toy company Pop Mart International Group's shares traded in Hong Kong soared 12.5% after its CEO said its annual revenue could top $4 billion this year, more than quadrupling after more than doubling in the first half of the year. Its CEO also announced that the company was releasing a mini version of its popular Labubu dolls. South Korea's Kospi dropped 0.7% after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un condemned South Korean-U.S. military drills that began this week. He vowed a rapid expansion of his nuclear forces to counter rivals, according to North Korean state media.

Yet the past five years have been an era of unrelenting upheaval — from the pandemic's seismic disruptions to economic and geopolitical instability. The lesson is clear: Innovation can't be paused indefinitely. Technology executives must strike a bold balance, continuing to invest in forward-looking capabilities — particularly in AI — to emerge stronger and ahead of competitors. AI will soon permeate every core business system, as well as the custom solutions that give your business a competitive edge. Though tariffs may slow down AI advancement, AI-led transformation is inevitable. CIOs must stay laser-focused on AI readiness, using this period of economic volatility to shore up their AI foundations. Focus On The Fundamentals For many companies, now isn't the time to chase the biggest or flashiest AI applications. Particularly if your company is in low-growth or cost-cutting mode, you're better off prioritizing what will scale. Taking stock of your current AI readiness and bolstering these foundational pillars now will pay off by giving you the flexibility to pivot to pursue future growth opportunities: A Necessary Mindset Shift For tech leaders who have been pursuing ambitious AI projects, a back-to-basics focus may be an adjustment. We've heard from companies in consumer packaged goods, transportation, and other industries that are temporarily scaling back aggressive plans for robotics in favor of simpler (and faster-to-deploy) automation. Abrupt changes in direction can be hard to digest, particularly when they mean postponing the 'exciting' work. But they also present an opportunity. As businesses adapt to the economic climate, tech leaders can redefine how they add value. By shifting your IT style to one that emphasizes operational excellence, efficiency, and resilience, tech organizations can give the business what it needs while paving the way for AI readiness. Security hygiene is always critical — and even more so at a time of widespread layoffs and increased insider risk. A Good Foundation Won't Crumble Shoring up your AI readiness now will give you speed and flexibility later. We learned this lesson during the COVID-19 pandemic — the companies that had been strengthening their foundations all along were the ones that were able to pivot to remote work and stand up new omnichannel capabilities most easily. We'll see a similar story with AI once the current volatility subsides. Companies that have continually made the investments will be positioned to jump out ahead.
