Despite only appearing in half the story, Fantine will always be the most cherished role in any adaptation of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables. Fourteen years before Anne Hathaway won the Oscar for playing Fantine in Tom Hooper's take on the musical, Thurman stepped into the shoes of the most sympathetic character in French literary history: a single mother at death's door who turns to sex work to support her daughter. Thurman perfectly captures Fantine's slow, tragic deterioration and eventual hopelessness in Bille

The Day of the Jackal author Frederick Forsyth dies aged 86
He was described as "one of the world's greatest thriller writers", in a tribute. He was surrounded by his family as he died at home on Monday morning. Day of the Jackal author Frederick Forsyth dies aged 86 A statement by Jonathan Lloyd, Forsyth's agent, said: 'We mourn the passing of one of the world's greatest thriller writers. 'Only a few weeks ago I sat with him as we watched a new and moving documentary of his life – In My Own Words, to be released later this year on BBC1 – and was reminded of an extraordinary life, well lived. 'After serving as one of the youngest ever RAF pilots, he turned to journalism, using his gift for languages in German, French and Russian to become a foreign correspondent in Biafra. 'Appalled at what he saw and using his experience during a stint as a secret service agent, he wrote his first and perhaps most famous novel, The Day of the Jackal (1972), and instantly became a global bestselling author. 'He went on to write more than 25 books (many of which were made into films) that have sold over 75 million copies. 'He will be greatly missed by his family, his friends, all of us at Curtis Brown and of course his millions of fans around the world – though his books will of course live on forever.' Forsyth was born in Kent, and was best known for various crime thriller novels, such as The Day of the Jackal and The Odessa File. He has sold millions of copies of his books and was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1997 New Year Honours list for services to literature. Forsyth has been married twice, first to former model Carole Cunningham between 1973 and 1988, and then to Sandy Molloy since 1994 until her death in 1994. Forsyth previously resided in a manor house in Hertfordshire before moving to Buckinghamshire in 2010. He is survived by two sons, Stuart and Shane, whom he had with Cunningham.

Netflix fans keep watching 'amazing new take on a classic' despite low rating
Fans have been singing its praises despite initial reviews Netflix viewers can't stop watching a 'must see film' that offers a fresh spin on a classic tale. The 2018 release, Robin Hood, has surprisingly become one of the most viewed titles on the platform, despite a meagre 14% rating. At the time of writing, it currently sits in second place in the top ten films most watched by subscribers in the UK. It's sandwiched between recent releases Tyler Perry's Straw in the top spot and French action thriller K.O. in third. Robin Hood is a radical reinterpretation of the timeless story of the outlaw who robbed from the rich to give to the poor. In this version, Taron Egerton, known for his roles in Kingsman, Rocketman and Carry-On, portrays Lord Robin of Loxley. He seeks revenge after returning from the Third Crusade to discover that the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Rogue One's Ben Mendelsohn, has declared him dead and seized all his property, reports Surrey Live. According to Empire's review of the film, Robin's journey mirrors that of Bruce Wayne becoming Batman. Egerton's rendition of the character even starts being referred to as 'The Hood'. He is trained by Jamie Foxx's character Yahya or John. Meanwhile, Robin also attempts to win back his girlfriend Marian, played by Eve Hewson, who later starred in Netflix's The Perfect Couple. Marian is now with another man, Will Scarlet, portrayed by Jamie Dornan, who is actually a member of the Merry Men in the original tales. Despite the somewhat tepid critical reception of the film, Netflix audiences have found reasons to be entertained. One admirer took to the internet to express their thoughts, stating: "This is a must see movie. Its a new take and twist of the classic tale of Robin Hood and breathes life into the legend once again. It might not be the most historically accurate remake of the tale but that is part of its charm." They pressed on, saying: "Solid stunts and despite all the hate the movie has endured none can question the hard work and love the whole cast and crew put into it. Their extraordinary archery skills are way beyond just CGI. In fact they were trained by famous archer Lars Anderson and can more than handle themselves around a bow and arrow." Another enthusiast commented: "I thought this film was incredible. An amazing new take on a classic. The immense number of Robin Hood films were starting to repeat one another and it was frankly getting tired, but this brought the movies back alive for younger audiences that perhaps haven't been too engaged in the previous versions. With a brilliant cast, some of which are popular, well known actors, and others who are rising stars, I think the production is incredible." One person even suggested: "Outside of the legendary (Disney) cartoon, this is the best Robin Hood out there." Meanwhile, another voiced a congruent opinion: "It was so much better than expected. It was a different take on the old Robin Hood movies." However, not all viewers were impressed. One disgruntled film-goer echoed the critics' sentiments, stating: "Everything was just as bad as the trailer promised. Don't watch this unwatchable piece of garbage. It will haunt your eyes forever."

Romeo Beckham leaves party with German influencer after break-up
Romeo Beckham has been spotted on a night out with a German influencer days after his break-up with Kim Turnbull was revealed. The middle son of David and Victoria Beckham, Romeo initially followed in his dad's footsteps and pursued a career in football. However last year he turned down a contract with Brentford FC to stay on with their B team and instead pursue a career in fashion. After breaking up with long-term girlfriend Mia Regan in February last year, the 22-year-old went on to date model and DJ Kim Turnbull, 26. But after a seven-month romance, and amid rumours of a Beckham family feud, last week it was revealed Romeo and Kim had split. A few days on, Romeo has been photographed on a night out with Caroline Daur, a model and influencer who boasts 4.6 million followers on Instagram. Late on Saturday night the pair were spotted leaving the same party at the Hotel Costes in Paris. Although she arrived alone around 11.30pm, Caroline and Romeo later slipped into the same car despite leaving the venue separately. They then headed to the French capital's trendy Julia nightclub, where they partied until 2:30am. However, security was reportedly on high alert, doing everything to shield her from the cameras including swearing at photographers. Despite initially travelling together, Romeo and Caroline then left the club separately. However, a source went on to tell MailOnline: 'Romeo was in town for work meetings, Roland Garros and also caught up with friends. He had dinner with his three friends one of whom is great friends with Caro, so she joined the group. It was a casual dinner in a group setting throughout the evening.' Caroline, 30, was born and raised in Hamburg, and started fashion blogging in 2014. Over the years she's worked with companies including Adidas, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi and Valentino and has founded her own brand and fitness program. The influencer has also starred in the Amazon Prime production Dinner Club and Netflix's She Said Yes. Overnight she shared a series of photos and videos from the French Open, where Romeo was seen on Friday attending the semi-final match between Italy's Lorenzo Musetti and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros. Dressed in a navy suit and black t-shirt, Romeo appeared somewhat downcast in some of the images taken at the game. It came after a source said Romeo and Kim had an 'amicable' split that has 'nothing to do' with the Beckham rift after her name was drawn into the drama after it was claimed she'd previously dated her boyfriend's brother Brooklyn, 26. 'Romeo and Kim are both young and they had a lovely time together but at that age things don't always last forever and they decided to split up,' a friend told the Daily Mail. 'They have been friendly since and have even been at the same venues. It's a huge shame, particularly as David and Victoria really adored her and thought she made Romeo happy but it wasn't to be. 'It happened a couple of weeks ago and relations have remained friendly between them.' The source went on to say each had a 'busy careers' and their travel schedules meant that 'having a relationship at this time isn't all that conducive to their lives'. More Trending Romeo previously dated model and content creator Mia, 22, for five years. When announcing their split in February last year, he wrote on Instagram: 'Mooch and I have parted ways after 5 years of love. We still have a lot of love and respect for each other and still hold a strong friendship and always will.' After featuring in a Burberry campaign when he was just 10, last year Romeo signed with fashion agency Paris Safe management and has since modelled for Versace at Milan Fashion Week.
