So You've Got a 'Fortnite' Accent and You Want to Get Rid of It

Apr 9, 2025 2:20 PM Players of the mega-popular battle royale game have a particular way of speaking. Unlearning it can be a challenge. Photograph:Everyone has an accent. Typically, it's a marker for where someone grew up, or in some celebrity cases, a bored rich person trying on a new persona. But did you know Fortnite players have their own accent, too?
The so-called 'Fortnite accent' refers to how players speak while playing Epic Games' massively popular online battle royale. After watching a solid 20 minutes of YouTube shorts and TikToks about it, I've determined it's a specific sort of cheery, high-pitched tone that sounds a lot like the stereotype of a teen girl uptalking, or ending even declarative statements in a way that sounds like a question. Or, as one Reddit user asking how to shed the accent put it, 'I speak like a 8 year old.' Sadly, their plea for help only got one response: 'what in gods name is a fortnite accent.'
For years, across YouTube and TikTok, players have recorded themselves playing while speaking in the accent, or trying not to do it. (Headphone warning: there's a lot of screaming in those clips.)
Adam Aleksic, a linguist and author who goes by Etymology Nerd online, bravely spent three hours of his one wild and precious life listening to videos of the so-called Fortnite accent. He describes the trend as 'fast speech and sharply rising intonations, almost like they have to communicate a feeling of excitement or shock they just experienced.' He goes on to explain that the accent is functional: it conveys reactions to what's happening in the game but it's also done for 'social performance.' It's part of a greater 'Ludolect,' he says, which is a dialogue specific to a game.
Communities often create their own languages, whether it's slang they use or the specific way in which they talk to each other; even couples develop their own codes. It makes sense that video games, which introduce new worlds and rules to abide by, follow the same pattern.
While I don't think the Fortnite accent is anything to be ashamed of, per se, if you want to shake it, treat it like any other type of code switching. Focus on how you pronounce words, listen to how speakers you want to sound like talk, and practice, practice, practice. If it worked for my friends who managed to ditch their Boston accents, surely it can work for you—at least until you're a couple drinks deep.

The Block viewers make major demand after noticing disappointing detail: 'Never get it right'

This season of The Block has been a divisive one. If viewers aren't complaining about the judges, it's about the manufactured drama, or even the lack of drama. Now, The Block fans have called out the five houses after being left disappointed by a major part of the design process. One viewer took to Reddit and wrote, "Please. PLEASE can we see more colour this season?! "There is too much brown, beige, monochrome BLAH this season. I know that colour can be polarising and they want to sell the homes. But these homes are already boring by design because they are all identical in their layout. Somebody, please try to stand out. These rooms are on life support and somebody has to bring some life to these houses." Many others agreed, with one person responding, "Marty [Fox] being a judge has hurt the teams who do step outside the box tbh because he is so damn critical of anything not within his idea of what sells. RELATED: The Block viewers call for 'new judges' after divisive room reveals: 'Baffles me' 'Insane' reason The Block viewers are skipping the first 5 minutes of every episode The Block fans divided over this year's season for one major reason: 'Stupid' "Contestants HAVE to win judging to sell their homes and afford to finish. Which means they have to please three judges, who never get it right, compared to the public's view or the bidders. It's created year after year carbon copies." Another wrote, "It looks to be as though the producers have deliberately set the contestants a very tight colour palette to choose from. As Cam keeps saying 'It's a real estate show!' so you think they're trying to engage no black rooms or designs as they want to maximise financial return. "This show has moved a long way and not for the better. Originality and quirkiness has been stamped out in favour of financial gain. I fear for the rest of the show." Others suggested that it wasn't that colour is "polarising", but it's just hard to do well. Some teams have used colour sparingly throughout the design process, like Sonny and Alicia in their kids' bedrooms, but others, like Robby and Matt, and Britt and Taz, have decided to stick to a more neutral colour palette. "Neutral colours and white walls are not timeless. It's the fashion of our time, and has been since the turn of the millennium," said a third. "Colour is making a comeback, and we'll look back at the white walls of the early 21st century and think how boring we were." Others didn't agree, with one viewer writing, "When you're building a home to sell, you never put a lot of colour in it. You keep all the tones as neutral as possible and use colour to create accents in your styling. This is so potential buyers won't be turned off by too much colour, and if a buyer wants to add more colour after they purchase it, then they can do that themselves. This is standard real estate practice." "If I were on the show I would make bolder decisions to make my house stand out and look different from the others," the OP responded. "Could it be a mistake? Sure, but at least it is trying something. If I were a buyer in this market, I would pass over these because they, like many mass produced, cookie cutter, suburban neighbourhoods simply look soulless. Give me character over mundane any day." Watch Chris Brown Surprise a 13-Year-Old Fan & Her Mom With a New Car & $10,000 at Recent Tour Stop

A 13-year-old fan and her mother received the ultimate surprise when attending a recent Chris Brown concert, as Breezy and TikTok influencer MDMotivator hooked up the pair with a special VIP package that included $10,000 and a new car. And it was all caught on video, which the star shared on social media Sunday (Aug. 10). It all starts with MDMotivator looking for the biggest Chris Brown fan and caught 13-year-old Gabby's attention, who recognized CB's 11-year-old daughter, Royalty, nearby. 'This is the best night of my life!' Gabby cries in the video. 'Chris, you influenced my whole dance career. I grew up dancing to you. You're such an inspiration to me. I love you so much!' Brown is shown in the clip giving MDMotivator his flowers for 'changing people's lives,' and also shared that his daughter Royalty cried after watching one of the influencer's videos in which he's helping others. The video then shows Gabby and her mom being blindfolded and escorted to a parking lot, where they were in shock after seeing a brand new Ford with a red bow on it that they would be taking home. Once Brown found out Gabby was a dancer, he gave her some advice for the road ahead. 'You said you dance? Don't stop, go harder and harder,' he relayed. 'Always be yourself. I love you guys.' CB got a ton of love in his comment section from the likes of Tony Yayo, Kelly Rowland and actor Omari Hardwick. Brown's Breezy Bowl XX stadium tour continues this week with shows in New Jersey and Philadelphia. Fortnite login is mostly back after an outage

Fortnite players on most platforms are able to hop into matches following a login issue that Epic Games described as preventing users from 'getting in reliably.' 'We're seeing players able to log back in now for most platforms, with the exception of PlayStation, and are working restore server health to normal for everyone to log in and matchmake as normal again,' Epic said at 8:02PM ET. 'We'll continue updating you as we bring everything back online.' Epic posted its initial status message about the issue at 6:39PM ET. While the login issue was happening, I wasn't able to get into the game on my Nintendo Switch 2. When I tried, the game showed a message that says 'unable to sign in to your account for online services' and to 'please try again later.' I also watched frustrated Twitch streamers who are trying to compete in a scheduled tournament that weren't able to log in or play games. In other updates, Epic said that the login issue also affected two of its other games, Rocket League and Fall Guys' and that it was investigating login errors for titles using Epic Online Services. Fortnite dealt with an extended downtime last year during the launch of its Greek mythology-themed season. In 2021, the game's servers went down for a few hours near the end of the year. Update, August 14th: Epic says players on most platforms can log in. Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.
