Florida Panthers' Sam Bennett roasted online for ‘apology' following Stanley Cup antics

Florida Panthers winger Sam Bennett ignited widespread outrage on Reddit after he apologized for previous dirty hits—offered as part of the team's Stanley Cup celebration—and went viral for all the wrong reasons.
Quoting a speech pilfered from Conor McGregor, Bennett's divisive comments unleashed a torrent of criticism from hockey fans, reigniting controversies surrounding sportsmanship, violence in hockey, and how far is too far when celebrating a championship.
Sam Bennett's speech in quoting Conor McGregor inspires mockery from fans as controversy breaks out regarding his 'dirty hits'
Sam Bennett's on-ice reputation has been a long source of debate — as a gritty, physical winger, he's also been often criticized for straying from the right side of that line into endangering and dirty play.
But after assisting the Florida Panthers in winning their first Stanley Cup, his moment on the mic didn't see him find redemption—it fanned controversy anew.
In the victory parade speech, Bennett gave a speech that was widely seen as tone-deaf, an echo of an old Conor McGregor saying: "I just want to apologize. to absolutely nobody." It was meant to be sarcastic or defiant, but for many fans, it came off as tasteless — especially given some of the recent hits for which he's been criticized, such as the elbow to Anthony Stolarz and a hit on Matthew Knies.

Sam Bennett Finally Apologizes
One of the best Reddit comments captured the mood: "There will be no sympathy when some takes a liberty with Bennett." Another called out, "Sounds like he had a bit to drink before taking the mic. Like he had hiccups or something."
Another said, "The league has had every opportunity to make a change, but they're showing his highlights on NHL Network instead. This is exactly what they want."
Notably, even some of the Panthers fans were let down.
One self-identified former season ticket holder penned, "The McGregor quotes were totally cringy and stupid by the players." Others complained about the departure from classy celebrations in past years, likening it to Alex Ovechkin's celebratory 2018 Cup night, which stayed upbeat without going after opponents.

Sam Bennett might have raised the Stanley Cup, but his off-ice comments have added another layer to his divisive image. While some will always admire his physicality of play, most are now questioning the character behind the jubilation—and whether the NHL is being proactive enough in encouraging responsibility over brutality.

NHL Hall of Fame 2025: Carey Price, Joe Thornton, P.K. Subban lead a star-studded first-ballot lineup
Image Via Twitter (NHL hall of fame 2025 Carey Price, Joe Thornton, P.K. Subban lead a star-studded first-ballot lineup) The 2025 Hockey Hall of Fame could be a rare occasion where a number of legends are inducted in the very first year of their eligibility. Splitters on this year's eligible list have historic names who have forged the modern NHL history. Players of this stature didn't just contest excellence, from world-class goaltending to brilliant playmaking and defense; they set a new standard for it. As the spotlight shifts to this year's selection, a few stars seem perfectly poised to make immediate history with a first-ballot induction. Elite hall of famers-in-waiting for 2025: Carey Price , P.K. Subban , Joe Thornton , Tuukka Rask , and Ryan Getzlaf Among the big giveaways for Price is longevity and stature at the goaltender position. He played for 15 long seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, winning 361 times with 49 shutouts. Those were numbers. Beyond these, Price has six major trophies under his belt, which spells that he was the most reliable goalie in the modern age to many. In defense, Subban brought style and quality over 13 National Hockey League (NHL) seasons. He split the years of his career among Montreal, Nashville, and New Jersey, gathering 467 points and also securing the prestigious Norris Trophy--best defenseman. On-field, Subban was impactful; off-field, he contributed to the game's popularity. The forward, Joe Thornton, racked up over 1,500 points in a stunning 24-year career. A franchise player for several teams, such as the San Jose Sharks and the Boston Bruins, Thornton's leadership and supreme passing ability sealed his receipt of the Hart Memorial and Art Ross Trophies. No player has been able to compete with such foresight and consistency for two decades. Another exceptional character, Ryan Getzlaf, played a very important role in leading the Anaheim Ducks to win the Stanley Cup. Known to consistently be in the offensive zone and having passed the 1,000 career points mark, he does not have a lengthy list of awards; however, his captaincy status and solid leadership on the ice will continue to keep him in the conversation for the Hall of Fame. Completing the list is Tuukka Rask, known for his accurate technique while under the goal. The former Boston Bruins goalie attained a splendid .921 save percentage and recorded 52 shutouts. The former Vezina Trophy winner is considered among the most reliable goaltenders of his time. Also Read: NHL trade rumor: Jonathan Toews reportedly choosing between Jets and Avalanche Motivated by such a rich lineup of gala careers going through the election, the Hockey Hall of Fame for 2025 will likely have several first-ballot inductees. New York Mets' new signing might have the most unforgettable name in sports history
Image Source: mlbnetwork/Instagram New York Mets roster moves are a dime a dozen this time of year; however, the Mets pulled off headlines across baseball on Monday, bringing aboard a player by the name that turns heads and raises eyebrows. Before the game in Atlanta on Tuesday night, the team formally selected the contract of left-handed reliever Dicky Lovelady. While he's spent a handful of seasons bouncing around the MLB, it's now the name on the back of his jersey that is catching some headlines. A logical fit for the 29-year-old pitcher, who used to go by Richard Lovelady, the nickname 'Dicky' has seemingly taken off overnight, complete with all of the hype that is the World Series. Dicky Lovelady Mets signing adds experience to bullpen Dicky Lovelady has flown under the radar, turning himself into a solid journeyman career in professional baseball. The Kansas City Royals originally drafted him, and he debuted in the big leagues in 2018, pitching in parts of five seasons for multiple teams. He had previously been in the Minnesota Twins minor league system and was on the Toronto Blue Jays roster for a short time earlier this season before being claimed off waivers by the Mets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lexi Gaming Unleash Your Power. Although Lovelady has spent his fair share of time in limbo, his left-handed arm and faithful experience have granted him plenty of opportunities. He arrives in the Mets' bullpen with a lifetime 5.26 ERA in 110 big league appearances. Those aren't exactly All-Star numbers, but the Mets, facing injuries and inconsistency in their bullpen, see Lovelady as potentially useful depth. Dicky Lovelady name sparks viral reaction among MLB fans Lovelady may have gone through ups and downs as a pitcher, but his name is turning heads more than it ever has. Despite having called himself 'Richard' for nearly his entire career, the Mets have officially listed him as 'Dicky' on their roster, an obvious wink at a name that has already turned up quite a bit in social media.
