KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia, as one of the first landmine-free countries in Asia, remains unwavering in its global advocacy to increase public awareness of the dangers posed by all forms of explosive remnants of war (ERW).
Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Air Force chief General Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris said Malaysia firmly believed that the harm caused by landmines far outweighs any perceived military utility.
This conviction has led Malaysia to take a firm stand and actively support the global effort towards a landmine-free world, including through a defence cooperation programme in demining and mine destruction with different countries.

He added that the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) continue to contribute to humanitarian efforts in mine-affected countries such as Cambodia and Bosnia.
'While it is true that we are already becoming a landmine-free country, we maintain an unwavering obligation to provide support to the victims of landmines.
'In Malaysia, the support was provided through the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Affairs Department, which offers various forms of assistance and support to veterans, including financial assistance, welfare programmes, and assistance with employment and healthcare,' he said in his keynote address during the International Seminar Towards a Landmine-free World - Case of Azerbaijan, here on Monday.
Muhamad Norazlan noted that according to the Landmines Monitor 2024 report, at least 5,757 people have been either killed or wounded by landmines and other ERWs worldwide in 2023.
In Azerbaijan alone, there have been 3,400 victims of landmines in the last 30 years, with an estimated 1.5 million landmines still hidden.
He said this is not just mere statistics, but represents real people whose lives have been irrevocably impacted by these indiscriminate weapons.

RMAF to assess 38 Legacy Hornet jets in Kuwait this September, says chief
KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will send a technical team to Kuwait in September to assess 38 F/A-18 Legacy Hornet fighter jets offered to Malaysia. RMAF Chief General Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris said that the mission received official approval from the United States, the country of origin of the aircraft, which then allowed access to documentation and maintenance records. 'The team will evaluate the jets on-site over two to three weeks. These are used aircraft, so we must assess long-term viability, particularly maintenance requirements. 'There's no point in acquiring a large fleet if we can't maintain them for operational readiness,' he told reporters after delivering his inaugural address as RMAF Chief at the Subang Air Base today. He added that delivery timelines would depend on when the Kuwaiti Air Force receives its new fleet of F/A-18E/F Super Hornets. 'If they receive four new jets, four Legacy aircraft will be released to us, and so on,' he said. Also present were RMAF Deputy Chief Lt Gen Datuk Nur Hafis Abdul Karim, Air Operations Commander Lt Gen Datuk Masro Kaliwon, Air Education and Training Commander Lt Gen Datuk Muhammad Tarminzi Mustapha and Air Support Commander Maj Gen Ahmad Khusairi Ahmad Fadhli. — Bernama

RMAF aircraft to fly low over Kudat, no cause for alarm
KUDAT: Residents need not be alarmed by the presence of low-flying aircraft or defence assets in the district. The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) said this as it will conduct Exercise Kelawar 2025 from July 21 to 30 in the Op Pasir North area, covering Pulau Banggi, Pulau Balambangan and Tanjung Kapur. "Helicopters will conduct low-level tactical flights during the exercise, while maritime assets from participating enforcement agencies will operate within designated training zones. "Most of the activities will take place at night," it said in a statement. The RMAF said the training aims to enhance the competency of its helicopter crews and Armed Forces Special Forces through integrated night-time operations. "It will also assess interoperability capabilities and the proficiency of RMAF helicopter crews working with the Armed Forces Special Forces at a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in the Op Pasir North area," it said.
