Packers injury update: Green Bay missing five key wide receivers for Colts joint practice

USA Todaya day ago
The Green Bay Packers pass catchers are walking wounded as they start joint practices with the Colts.
Matt LaFleur's team is in Indianapolis taking part in a joint scrimmage ahead of their preseason game on Saturday, but the Packers are shorthanded at wide receiver, with five of their top six missing practice with injury.
Romeo Doubs is the latest addition to the absentees list after suffering a back injury on a collision with Evan Williams at practice in Green Bay earlier this week.
Head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Doubs' injury is not serious, and he was in contention to practice on Thursday before ultimately being held out.
The other four Packers receivers missing the joint practice are Christian Watson (knee), Jayden Reed (foot), Dontayvion Wicks (calf) and Savion Williams (shoulder).
Reed has made progress and is now out of the walking boot he was spotted wearing during Green Bay's preseason opener versus the New York Jets, but is clearly not ready to practice.
Wicks has been out since late July with the calf while Williams has been in and out as he works his way back from offseason shoulder surgery. Watson is still rehabbing from the torn ACL he sustained in the regular season finale in January.
The laundry list of injuries means Matthew Golden is currently the Packers' de facto wide receiver one and looks to be making the most of the opportunity, winning both his one vs. one reps against Colts defensive backs in impressive fashion.
Malik Heath and Mecole Hardman are Green Bay's next best options behind Golden at present, with a gaggle of young wide receivers behind them in newly signed Jawaan Baker, Julian Hicks, Cornelius Johnson, Isaiah Neyor and Will Sheppard.
Meanwhile, starting quarterback Jordan Love is present in Indy but is not practicing after having surgery to repair a ligament issue in the thumb on his non-throwing hand. He was seen wearing a cast on his left arm as he arrived at the practice.
LaFleur told the media the surgery 'went well' and while he will not throw right away once returning to practice, the team anticipates Love will have 'some sort of participation' with the team next week.
With so many receivers missing, as well as the starting quarterback, the Packers endured some unsurprisingly disjointed periods of play against the Colts starting defense on Thursday.

New York Jets: Justin Fields TD Drive Among Key Takeaways from 30-10 Preseason Win vs. Packers

There was a lot for the New York Jets to like from their 30-10 road win against the Green Bay Packers in the preseason opener Saturday night. The Jets starters shined against the Packers starters, and the backups outplayed their hosts on both sides of the ball. New York had 403 yards of total offense and controlled the clock with 38:41 time of possession to 21:19 for Green Bay. Gang Green won the turnover battle 2-0, recovered one forced fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, and set up a chip-shot field goal after recovering another fumble on a muffed punt return by the Packers. The Jets didn't surrender a single sack and produced four of their own. All in all, it was a good start to the Aaron Glenn era. 'Preseason or not, a win is a win,' the Jets coach said. 'and I was always taught that if you want to be a winner, you not only have top understand how to win but how to consistently win. And this was a great win by our guys. A lot of good things happened in this game.' Let's break down the key takeaways from the Jets 30-10 win over the Packers. Related: Justin Fields impresses on TD drive Justin Fields directed an impressive 10-play, 79-yard touchdown drive in the one series that the Jets starting offense played. After an uneven start to training camp, it's exactly what the Jets needed to see from their new quarterback. Fields completed 3 of 4 passes for 42 yards on the drive. He made quick reads and checked down on each of his three completions, including a pair to fullback Andrew Beck, one that went for 24 yards. His lone incompletion was poor execution on a quick pass to Garrett Wilson. The 26-year-old capped the drive when he eluded pressure and then took off to his right on third down and scored on a 13-yard touchdown run. It's been eons since the Jets had a quarterback who can beat you with his legs. This TD run provided a glimpse into a new dimension Fields brings to the offense. 'We love where he's at right now,' Glenn said postgame. Jets dominate line of scrimmage The Jets looked really good at the point of attack, on each side of the ball. The offensive line kept each of their three quarterbacks clean and paved the way for the Jets to rush for 147 yards — including an impressive 14-yard burst by Braelon Allen against Green Bay's first-team defense. With John Simpson (back) out, center Joe Tippmann seamlessly slid over to left guard with the ones, and Josh Myers started at center. Myers played 22 snaps in his bid to unseat Tippmann at center; Tippmann played just the first series. Read into all that as you will as it pertains to the center competition. First-round pick Armand Membou started at right tackle and played 22 snaps. He didn't allow a single QB pressure, per Pro Football Focus, on 10 drop backs, making for an impressive preseason debut in the NFL. The Jets looked good on the defensive line, too. Playing without injured veterans Quinnen Williams and Byron Cowert, the D-line helped hold the Packers to 12 first downs and just one third-down conversion in 10 attempts. Lineman Jay Tufele led the Jets with three tackles and 1.5 sacks, and scored a touchdown when he recovered a Malik Willis fumble in the end zone. Leonard Taylor III came off the edge to force that Willis fumble and was credited with a sack and two tackles after a disappointing start to training camp. Lineman Eric Watts was credited with two solo tackles. Related: This issue remains Jets problem We interrupt all of this positivity with a sobering note: as they did so often under the previous regime with coach Robert Saleh, the Jets continued to take a lot of penalties, including a string of mindless ones. The Jets were penalized 10 times for 91 yards, low-lighted by a pair of late hits on defense and a personal foul for unnecessary roughness against Micheal Clemons, who tangled with Packers offensive lineman Zach Tom. It was an offsetting penalty, but Glenn pulled Clemons off the field and chewed him out on the sideline. 'The only thing that wasn't our brand is the amount of penalties that we had,' Glenn explained postgame. 'Some of those penalties were undisciplined penalties. We've got to clean those up.' Another penalty that stood out was a holding call against offensive lineman Liam Fornadel — who's unlikely to make the 53-man roster — which wiped out a 73-yard touchdown run by Donovan Edwards. These Jets made most of opportunity with Mason Taylor out Mason Taylor is expected to be New York's starting tight end this season. But the rookie second-round pick didn't play Saturday due to a high-ankle sprain, allowing others to make a case for playing time. Beck, a fullback who has tremendous blocking skills and can also play in the traditional tight end spot, stood out on the opening drive and should play a sizeable role in New York's run-heavy offense this season. Stone Smartt, who caught 16 passes with the Los Angeles Chargers last season, scored a 24-yard TD from Adrian Martinez on a neatly designed tight end screen Saturday. Long shot Zack Kuntz had a 12-yard reception from the tight end position. Allen Lazard injured in Jets preseason win Veteran wide receiver Allen Lazard sustained a shoulder injury and will be further evaluated by the Jets. He reportedly was seen leaving Lambeau Field with his right arm in a sling. The Jets are quite thin at the WR position behind Wilson, and counted on Lazard bouncing back from a pair of subpar seasons in New York. He caught the two passes thrown his way against the Packers, his former team, and is a valuable run blocker, which should be even more important this season. Tyler Johnson had two receptions for 27 yards in the preseason opener, and rookie Arian Smith caught a pair for 18 yards. New York Jets: 3 Storylines for Preseason Opener Against Packers, Including Why Justin Fields Will Play

The New York Jets kick off their 2025 preseason schedule, and the Aaron Glenn era, when they visit the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Saturday. Though the game doesn't count, there are impressions to make, jobs to be won. And Glenn said it'll be special to lead the Jets on to the field for the first time as coach, 31 years after the former cornerback was their first-round pick in the 1994 NFL Draft. Glenn said he wants to win 'every time we hit the grass.' But a preseason W in early August is not the most important thing here for the Jets. Let's examine three key storylines to follow when the Jets visit the Packers in their preseason opener Saturday. Related: 1. Justin Fields, Jets starters will play against Packers In a distinct shift from recent years, the Jets plan to have most of their starters play in the first preseason game. That includes their new starting quarterback Justin Fields. It's a risky move by Glenn, one that has massive implications should Fields or another key player get injured. In fact, the last time the Jets played their QB1 in the preseason opener, Zach Wilson sustained a knee injury and missed the first three games of the regular season in 2022. But Glenn didn't sound scared Thursday when he declared that the starters will play. 'We're playing,' the coach stated emphatically. 'I can't tell you how much the guys will play. That's going to factor on how the game goes. But, we're playing.' When pushed by reporters, he quickly responded, 'I want our guys to play. That's the reason.' OK then. This means all eyes will be on Fields, who's had an inconsistent training camp so far. He may only play a series or two at most, but if Fields is decisive, shows a firm grasp of the offense, makes quick decisions (something he's struggled with his entire four-year career), moves the ball downfield, and doesn't get injured, well, that'll be a big win for the Jets no matter the final score. The offense should have nine of its 11 starters available to play Saturday. Left guard John Simpson (back) and rookie tight end Mason Taylor (high ankle sprain) are out. But there'll be enough regulars out there building continuity with Fields and new offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, a first time play caller in the NFL. 'I think we need to at least see the field each and every game,' Fields explained. 'I think that will be good for our team. It will be good for Tanner with the in-game stuff. It will be good for me and the guys on offense. I know some guys, they sit out the whole preseason, but I don't think that's the case for us. Just because of the new team, new offense and stuff like that.' The Jets defense could be missing several injured starters. Stud lineman Quinnen Williams (calf) is definitely out, as is veteran lineman Byron Cowert (ankle) and defensive end Jermaine Johnson, who remains on the PUP list after sustaining a torn Achilles last season. Edge rusher Will McDonald IV (back spasms) also may not play. Since the Packers reportedly are going to play their starters a bit, too, on Saturday, it's a good early test — albeit a brief one — for the Jets best players. Related: 2. Joe Tippmann vs. Josh Myers: Centers of attention Glenn didn't reveal who will start at center against the Packers. However, incumbent Joe Tippman is first team on the depth chart and likely will get the starting nod. But he's in a serious training camp battle with Josh Myers, who was surprisingly signed as a free agent this offseason after playing four years with the Packers. In fact, their competition is the most serious and important one at Jets camp. You'd think that Tippmann, who's entering his third season, played over 1,000 snaps last season with the Jets, and was their second-round pick in 2023, is the favorite. Especially because he played well in 2024 and is viewed as a cornerstone piece of the offensive line. But the Jets signed Myers, who was Fields' center at Ohio State, and declared an open competition this summer. A bit perplexing, maybe, though Tippmann has embraced the competition. 'It's been great, just battling it out with Josh,' the 24-year-old said this week. 'In practice, we know we're battling it out, and then after practice, we're able to sit down, no hard feelings, it's just how can we each get better as a player? And I think we're both doing a great job, both taking that next step as the center to just make the team better.' It'll be interesting to see which center gets the chance to play with Fields and the ones on offense Saturday. Perhaps it'll be a sign of who'll start Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Or maybe Glenn switches it up and goes with the other center with Fields in their next preseason game, Aug. 16 against the New York Giants. Glenn, for one, is enjoying the competition between these two proven NFL starters vying for the same spot. 'It is a fierce, fierce battle,' Glenn said with a smile. Related: 3. After Garrett Wilson, who'll step up in receiving game for Jets? Here's something to watch for Saturday: can anyone outside of Garrett Wilson establish himself in the receiving game for the Jets? No matter what he does against the Packers, we all know who Wilson is and what he can do after three 1,000-yard receiving seasons to start his NFL career and a 101-catch campaign in 2024. He and Fields are building their rapport in camp and there's no doubt who the No. 1 receiving option is on the Jets. But after Wilson, then who? Taylor emerged quickly as a Fields favorite early in training camp, and the rookie tight end appeared well on his way to starting Week 1. That is until he sustained a nasty high ankle sprain. You're probably thinking it, so we'll just say it: that is so Jets. With Taylor out, Jeremy Ruckert and Stone Smartt will get longer looks Saturday. Zack Kuntz should, as well. But there's not a real receiving threat in that bunch. Also Read:: NFL games today: Week 1 NFL Preseason Schedule As for the actual wide receivers, behind Wilson, rookie fourth-round pick Arian Smith is the most intriguing. He's a burner, though comes with a bad reputation for dropping passes. He's been pretty good in camp, though, so let's see what he delivers against the Packers. Conversely, Malachi Corley has shown little in camp and needs a big preseason to avoid getting cut. He was a third-round pick in 2024 and caught three passes last season, showing all the makings of being a bust. He's listed as second string on the depth chart, but that's being kind since he was here last year. A no-show or poor performance Saturday could grease the skids for his quick exit out of Florham Park. The Jets are counting on Josh Reynolds and Tyler Johnson as receivers, though neither has overly impressed in camp. Then there's former Packers WR Allen Lazard, trying to hang on with the Jets after two poor seasons with them. The other thing to watch for in the passing game? That's how the running backs are often utilized as receivers. There's been plenty of passes coming to Breece Hall, Braelon Allen and Isiah Davis in training camp. Let's see if that's a staple in New York's passing attack against the Packers.
