North Yorkshire's film-star castle set to earn its keep by hosting paying guests
Laurence Olivier's elderly Lord Marchmain in Brideshead Revisited died in it and a pair of hot young newlywed aristocrats in Bridgerton made out in it.
Now someone with deep pockets may be able to occupy that same 18th-century canopy bed at Castle Howard. In the morning they might take breakfast in a room with Canaletto paintings on the wall and Meissen plates on which to butter their toast.
The custodians of a place that is arguably England's grandest, most beautiful country house are considering next year bringing in high-end hospitality packages.
It comes as the North Yorkshire house on Thursday revealed the results of a major restoration project, five years in the planning, which included updates to rooms, a rehang, a transformation of its Long Gallery and a fabulous recreation of a Tapestry Drawing Room destroyed in a fire in 1940.
The house is already well known from being used in TV and film, including Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, the 1981 ITV series and the 2008 film Brideshead Revisited and more recently in Netflix's Bridgerton, where characters played by Regé-Jean Page and Phoebe Dynevor turn a fake courtship into a blissful marriage.
It has also been occasionally hired for private hospitality events such as Ellie Goulding's wedding reception.
The idea of it being used as a kind of expensive, exclusive Airbnb would appear to be the next step.
'We've always referred to this as a living house,' said Nicholas Howard, a descendant of Charles Howard, the third Earl of Carlisle who commissioned the house in 1699. 'It's not a museum. And if you're going to call it a living house, you've got to make it a living house. And that involves having people in it.'
There is also a more practical reason, said his wife, Victoria Howard, a former chief executive of HarperCollins. 'We need income for the next burnt-out room. We've got quite a few more.'
Having people pay to stay is a likely project for next year, she said. 'We would probably do it no more than a couple of times a year because it would interfere with the day visitors.'
Those day visitors number nearly 300,000 a year. They come to marvel at not only the notable architecture, conceived by Sir John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor, but to enjoy acres of sweeping parkland filled with lakes, fountains, statues, temples and pyramids.
One of the bleakest moments in the house's history was the 1940 fire, which took place while it was being used as a wartime girls school. It destroyed Castle Howard's incredible dome and more than 40 rooms.
The dome was restored by George Howard in 1962 and income from Brideshead Revisited allowed the reconstruction of the Garden Hall and New Library.
The recreation of the lost Tapestry Drawing Room is arguably the star attraction of the latest restoration project.
The tapestries were woven for the room in 1706 by John Vanderbank and depict the four seasons in scenes taken from the work of David Teniers.
Luckily, when the fire happened they were not in the room. 'They had been on a sort of trek around the house to various places, each of which was more inappropriate than the last,' said Howard.
Now they are back where they should be, in the newly restored and furnished room, for the first time in centuries.
'This is the first time I've seen them really because you can now get up close to them and that's important,' he said. 'You can see the detail.
'In some ways, I'm sort of getting to know them properly for the first time in my life, which is really nice.'
The renewal project has not been without its difficulties along the way, not least the choice of painting to hang over the mantelpiece.
'I said that I felt it ought to be definitely some sort of classical scene, an allegory or a historical scene or whatever,' said Howard.
Auction sites were scoured and the ideal painting was found in Barcelona – a work by the Italian baroque painter, Sebastiano Ricci.
It was successfully bought. 'We then discovered that, actually, it had been sold from this house in 1991,' said Howard. 'For a lot less than we bought it for.'
Castle Howard's 21st Century Renaissance opens to the public on 25 April.

Laurence Fox could face trial in 2027 over upskirting photo of TV star
The actor-turned-activist is alleged to have shared a compromising image in a tweet posted in April 2024 of Kaur, 52, who appears regularly on Good Morning Britain and has previously appeared on GB News. Ms Kaur, who has waived her right to anonymity, sat in the public gallery at Woolwich Crown Court on Thursday as Fox, of Peldon in Essex, appeared charged with two counts under the Sexual Offences Act 2003. The 47-year-old defendant is accused of sharing a photograph of a person's genitals 'intending that the person or another person would see the genitals, and for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification, and being reckless as to whether that person would be caused alarm, distress or humiliation' in the first count. The second count alleges he shared a photograph which showed, or appeared to show, 'another person in an intimate state, with the intention of causing that person alarm, distress or humiliation'. The court hearing on Thursday was listed for plea and trial preparation but Fox, who was wearing a white shirt and grey blazer with jeans, was not asked to enter any pleas. A provisional trial with a time estimate of four days was set for December 6 2027 at the same court, with Fox granted bail to appear for a further case management hearing on November 14 this year. Sarah Forshaw KC, defending, asked the court if it would be possible to look at whether other venues may be able to accommodate an earlier trial as 'December 2027 is a long way ahead'. The police previously said Fox had been 'charged with an offence contrary to section 66A of the Sexual Offences Act 2003' which 'relates to an image that was posted on a social media platform in April 2024'. Section 66A of the Sexual Offences Act relates to 'cyber flashing'. The charge, introduced in 2023, makes it an offence to intentionally share a sexual image of someone without consent, with the aim of causing alarm, distress, humiliation or for sexual gratification. Upskirting, taking pictures of people under their clothes without their permission, became a specific criminal offence in 2019. Offenders can face up to two years in jail and be placed on the sex offenders' register. Fox was fired from GB News in October 2023 after an on-air rant about journalist Ava Evans. He previously starred as James Hathaway in ITV's drama series Lewis.

Love Island fans spot tell tale signs villa beauty HATED snog with show hunk – did you?
LOVE Island viewers are convinced one Islander was not feeling it whilst snogging a show hunk on the terrace. During Wednesday night's episode, Dejon Noel-Williams, 26, and Megan Forte Clarke, 24, snuck off for a quiet chat - or so their co-stars thought. Advertisement 4 Love Island viewers are convinced Meg was not feeling it whilst snogging Dejon on the terrace Credit: ITV 4 The flirty mood quickly turned awkward Credit: ITV The flirty mood quickly turned awkward as the pair discussed their connection, before sharing the very unconvincing smooch. PT Dejon started the chat, telling musical theatre performer Meg: 'I like the way that things are going.' She replied, 'Yeah, same. I feel the exact same.' But the tension was hard to ignore as she added, 'I feel like we talk… everyone else's f*****g business.' Advertisement Trying to take things to the next level, Dejon asked if she still wanted to share a bed with him, to which she said yes. Then came the kiss - and that's when fans say the red flags really started waving. Before Dejon leaned in, Meg awkwardly asked, 'Oh, you're going to kiss me?' And once the kiss was over, she laughed and said, 'Is that enough?' Advertisement Fans took to Instagram to dissect the painfully awkward moment, with one writing beneath some grabs of the scene: ''Oh ur gonna kiss me' & 'was that enough' – she DID NOT want that." Another added: 'That was so false hahaha she doesn't like him. Her face afterwards said it all.' 'Get him out!' rant Love Island fans after boy's 'scary red flag behaviour' A third agreed: 'SO TRUE she don't like him like that.' ITV2 viewers previously slammed Meg after she made a huge U-turn in bid to stay in the villa. Advertisement And it came just a day after she seemed "underwhelmed" when she chose Dejon in last night's launch. On Monday night, Meg chose Dejon, but when they met for the first time, fans were convinced there was no attraction on either side. In fact, she then went onto tell the rest of the girls later in the episode that she wasn't really "feeling him". But as Tuesday's recoupling loomed, Meg seemed to change her tune. Advertisement In fact when she saw US bombshell Toni chatting to Djon, she was heard saying to her fellow Islanders: 'I don't have my man, Dejon's gone - that's it!' This didn't go unnoticed by fans, who took to social media to vent about her "game plan" One said: "Meg doesn't like Dejon but she's got to secure her place in the Villa, baddd!" While another chimed in: "All Meg is worried about is going home, she don't care about Dejon." Advertisement This one added: "Meg defo has a game plan! "She's being all sweet to Dejon to stay on the show." Later, Dejon and Meg were up on the terrace and Meg continued her fight not to get dumped, and upped her game. So much so, Dejon was heard reassuring her: "You haven't got anything to worry about, you're my favourite, one thing about me is I'll always be honest with my feelings.' Advertisement It comes hot on the heels of viewers venting that Meg had "no interest" in Dejon last night. It came after she looked disappointed when she picked him in the recoupling. Again venting on social media, fans shared their thoughts. "Meg doesn't fancy him at ALL," said one. Advertisement "meg's face changeddd when dejon walked out," said another. A third person added: "Meg is not into Dejon in the SLIGHTEST." "Yeah Meg doesn't like Dejon, he is definitely not her type but she cannot outrightly say it," said a fourth. 4 The pair were coupled up during Sunday's launch Credit: Eroteme Advertisement
