Microsoft server hack has now hit 400 victims, researchers say
The figure, which is derived from a count of digital artifacts discovered during scans of servers running vulnerable versions of Microsoft's SharePoint software, compares to 100 organisations cataloged over the weekend. Eye Security says the figure is likely an undercount.
"There are many more, because not all attack vectors have left artifacts that we could scan for," said Vaisha Bernard, the chief hacker for Eye Security, which was among the first organisations to flag the breaches.
The spy campaign kicked off after Microsoft failed to fully patch a security hole in its SharePoint server software, kicking off a scramble to fix the vulnerability when it was discovered. Microsoft and its tech rival, Google owner Alphabet, have both said Chinese hackers are among those taking advantage of the flaw. Beijing has denied the claim.
The details of most of the victim organisations have not yet been fully disclosed. Bernard declined to identify them.

Tirunelveli ‘honour' killing case: Police sub-inspector couple picked up for inquiry
The Palayamkottai police have picked up for questioning the parents — both Sub-Inspectors of Police — of a youth arrested on charges of murdering a Scheduled Caste (SC) man, who was hacked to death in Tirunelveli on Sunday (July 27, 2025). Sources in the police said that the deceased, C. Kavin Selvaganesh, 27, an IT employee from Arumugamangalam near Eral in Thoothukudi district, had reportedly proposed to the sister of the accused, Surjith, 23. While Kavin worked for a Chennai-based IT company, the woman, a Siddha practitioner, was employed at a private clinic in KTC Nagar, Palayamkottai. She belongs to a community in the Most Backward Caste (MBC) list. When the woman's parents Saravanakumar and Krishnaveni got to know about their daughter's liasion with a Dalit, they reportedly objected to it. What happened on July 27? Kavin had returned to his native village Arumugamangalam to take his ailing grandfather for treatment to the clinic where the woman was working, in KTC Nagar, on Sunday afternoon. Upon learning that Kavin was at the clinic, the woman's younger brother, Surjith, went there and asked him to accompany him for 'conciliation talks.' Kavin was riding a bike along Mangammaal Salai in KTC Nagar, with Surjith riding pillion. After covering some distance on the road leading to the Palayamkottai-Thoothukudi four-lane highway, Surjith allegedly attacked Kavin with a machete. Kavin stopped the two-wheeler and attempted to flee, but Surjith chased him down and hacked him to death. Passersby alerted the Palayamkottai police, who rushed to the spot and apprehended Surjith. He reportedly told the police that Kavin had been harassing his elder sister under the guise of love, and that she did not reciprocate his feelings. 'Since he continued to harass my innocent sister despite her repeated warnings, I murdered Kavin,' police sources quoted him as saying. Family alleges 'honour' killing The post-mortem examination on Kavin's body was performed at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital on Monday (July 28). The relatives of the deceased, however, claimed to accept the body, alleging that it was an 'honour' killing. 'The couple had been in a relationship since their school days, and it continued up until yesterday. If it was truly unreciprocated love, as her family claims, they could have filed a complaint with the police, especially since the woman's parents are Sub-Inspectors,' said the relatives of the deceased. 'When it became clear to her family that she wanted to marry Kavin, they orchestrated this 'honour' killing. Therefore, the parents should also be arrested,' they added. The police, after arresting Surjit, picked up Saravanakumar and Krishnaveni, who have been cited as accused 2 and 3 in the First Information Report (FIR), for inquiry. First Additional Sessions Judge Sathya, remanded Surjit to judicial custody till August 14. Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, Santosh Hadimani said: 'As of now, we only have the version of the accused. Only further investigation can reveal the details of the case.'

Nayara Energy moves Delhi HC against Microsoft for suspending key services
Indian oil refining and marketing company, Nayara Energy, which is backed by Russian investment, has taken legal action against Microsoft. The company said the US-based tech firm had abruptly and unilaterally suspended essential services without any prior warning. "Microsoft is currently restricting Nayara Energy's access to its own data, proprietary tools, and products --despite these being acquired under fully paid-up licences," stated Nayara. Petition filed in Delhi HC The company has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. It is seeking an interim injunction and immediate restoration of services to protect its rights and ensure continued access to important digital systems. According to Nayara, Microsoft did not discuss or notify the company before cutting off services. "This action has been taken unilaterally, without prior notice, consultation or recourse, and under the guise of compliance," the statement added. Sanctions lead to disruptions Nayara, which purchases large volumes of Russian oil, was recently sanctioned by the European Union. The company is mostly owned by Russian entities, including oil giant Rosneft. Although the sanctions are from the EU, Nayara claims that Microsoft -- a US-based firm -- is not legally required to enforce them under American or Indian law. Despite this, sources said Microsoft suspended Nayara's services last Tuesday. Since then, email accounts and Teams access for Nayara employees have been unavailable. Microsoft has not commented on the matter. Following the sanctions, at least two ships avoided loading refined products from Nayara's Vadinar facility. One crude tanker carrying Russian Urals was also diverted. In addition, Nayara's CEO resigned and was replaced by Sergey Denisov. Key role in India's energy sector Nayara Energy highlighted its important role in India's fuel economy. The company contributes around 8 per cent of the country's refining capacity and 7 per cent of its petrol pump network. It is also developing about 8 per cent of India's polypropylene capacity. While facing these challenges, Nayara said it remains committed to maintaining uninterrupted supply across India. Focus on domestic market and growth Operating under the motto 'In India, for India', Nayara mainly serves the domestic market through retail outlets, institutional sales, and partnerships with other oil marketing companies. The company is also investing in petrochemicals and clean energy, generating thousands of jobs. Nayara added that it complies fully with Indian regulations and continues to work closely with Indian authorities to maintain transparency and accountability.
