Everton's new stadium to host high-profile rugby league international soon after opening
The club announced Wednesday that a high-profile rugby league match between England and Australia will take place at Everton Stadium on Nov. 1.
The 53,000-seat venue on the waterfront at Bramley-Moore Dock will host Everton's soccer matches starting next season, replacing the club's long-time home of Goodison Park.
The new stadium has been staging test events in recent weeks.
'As well as being home to Everton, our new stadium was built to also host world-class sporting and entertainment events,' Colin Chong, Everton's interim chief executive, said. 'Securing an international fixture of this magnitude demonstrates Everton Stadium's status as one of the U.K.'s leading venues.'
Everton's new stadium has already been selected as a host venue for the men's European Championship in 2028.

'Massively relieved' Australia score late try to beat Fiji
Australia are ranked eighth in the world and defeated England in November [Getty Images] Australia 21 (14) Tries: Porecki, McReight, Wilson Cons: Lolesio 2, Donaldson Fiji 18 (5) Tries: Rayasi, Tagitagivalu Cons: Muntz Pens: Muntz 2 Captain Harry Wilson's try one minute from full-time denied Fiji a famous win in Australia. The Wallabies laboured in their only warm-up fixture before their first Test against the British and Irish Lions on 19 July in Brisbane. Advertisement Joe Schmidt's side did little to worry Lions head coach Andy Farrell as Fiji - seeking their first win in Australia in more than 70 years - fought back from 14-5 down to lead 18-15 heading into the closing stages. "Massively relieved, because you want to get a result," Schmidt said. "But I am disappointed with the performance and I know the players will be looking for more out of themselves, and that has to happen in a very short space of time. "Thirteen days' time, we won't be afforded the number of errors that Fiji gave us. "Fiji were superb. Some of the players we knew would be elusive and quick and powerful, and they turned up and were all those things." Advertisement Tries by hooker Dave Porecki and flanker Fraser McReight put the hosts in control as half-time approached. However, debutant Salesi Rayasi, who is a former New Zealand sevens player, produced a wonderful finish to close the gap in the final play of the half. A forward pass from Ben Donaldson ruled out a third score for Australia early in the second half as Schmidt's side failed to master spirited Fiji. A stunning break by Jiuta Wainiqolo from deep inside his own half set up Lekima Tagitagivalu for a try to put Mick Byrne's side back within striking distance. Fly-half Caleb Muntz kicked two penalties to put the Pacific Island side on the brink of another win over Australia, following their 22-15 victory at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Advertisement But Wilson showed great strength to ground the ball under enormous pressure to deny the visitors when they were in sight of victory. A further area of concern for Australia was the sight of Noah Lolesio, the likely starting fly-half against the Lions, being carried off on a stretcher after a nasty head injury. Line-ups Australia: Wright; Potter, Suaalii, Ikitau, Jorgensen; Lolesio, McDermott; Slipper, Porecki, Alaalatoa, Frost, Williams, Gleeson, McReight, Wilson (capt). Replacements: Pollard, Bell, Nonggorr, Hooper, Tizzano, White, Donaldson, Daugunu. Fiji: Rayasi; Ravouvou, Masi, Tuisova, Wainiqolo; Muntz, Kuruvoli; Mawi, Ikanivere (capt), Ravai, Nasilasila, Mayanavanua, Tagitagivalu, Canakaivata, Mata. Max Verstappen starts on pole for Formula 1's British Grand Prix, with title rivals behind
Associated Press SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — Max Verstappen has pole position for the British Grand Prix but the reigning Formula 1 champion will have title rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris close behind in Sunday's race. Red Bull's Verstappen had struggled in practice but found extra pace in Saturday's qualifying session to take pole ahead of McLaren's Piastri and Norris, who both made small but costly mistakes. It could be a hectic fight for the win with Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari all showing strong pace in qualifying, with the top six cars covered by just 0.229 of a second. There's also a chance of rain during the race, which could upend everyone's strategy. The leading contenders are using contrasting setups which mean different strengths and weaknesses at various points on the track. Verstappen's car in particular sacrifices grip through the corners for top speed on the straights. Piastri leads the standings by 15 points from Norris, the winner of last week's Austrian Grand Prix, with Verstappen a distant third, 61 points off the lead. ___ AP auto racing: recommended

Harry Wilson's late try saves Australia in a 21-18 win over Fiji
NEWCASTLE, Australia — A last-gasp try by captain Harry Wilson has salvaged a dramatic 21-18 win for Australia on Sunday in its international season-opener against Fiji. Wilson twisted and spun over from close range after several minutes of the Wallabies pressuring the Fijian line defense to earn a narrow, comeback victory that had appeared unlikely after a stunning Fijian rally. Wilson's try with less than two minutes remaining saved what would have been a difficult two weeks of reflection for the Wallabies ahead of the series-opening test against the British and Irish Lions in Brisbane on July 19. 'Such a tough game,' Wilson said. 'It was awesome to go to battle with you guys. It's always a tough one.' A spectacular long-range try for Fiji midway through the second half appeared to be enough for the visitors to claim a another famous victory over Australia — the latest being at the 2023 Rugby World Cup — before Wilson's late intervention. After a frantic start from both teams, the Wallabies found the line through hooker Dave Porecki, playing his first test in almost two years since the 2023 World Cup, when he dived over from the back of a rolling maul in the eighth minute. Noah Lolesio added the conversion. The best move of the first half — frequently punctuated by stoppages which stifled any match momentum — led to the Wallabies' second try when a sweeping backline move featuring Len Ikitau and Joseph Suaali'i allowed Fraser McReight to score in the corner. Lolesio again converted to stretch the lead to 14-0. Fullback Salesi Rayasi responded almost immediately for Fiji just before the halftime break, somehow finding space to to wriggle through the defense to score in the corner after his team had counterattacked from an ill-advised chip kick by the Wallabies. The Australians had only needed to maintain possession for a few seconds more to preserve a 14-point margin into the break. Flyhalf Caleb Muntz missed the conversion from the sideline for a 14-5 half-time score. The Wallabies may have dominated the first half, but it was almost all Fiji in the second. Muntz added a penalty goal after the break to narrow the margin to six points before the Wallabies had their second try of the match disallowed after the referee spotted a forward pass. The match was then upended by some vintage Flying Fiji attack. Jiuta Wainiqolo gained possession after broken play inside Fiji's half, the winger then slalomed his way through four defenders in a weaving run before guiding a looping pass for Lekima Tagitagivalu to score and spark jubilant celebrations by the large number of Fiji supporters at Newcastle. Muntz converted to give Fiji a 15-14 lead. The Fijians almost went further ahead, appearing to score another thrilling try down the same right flank but it was overruled by the Television Match Official who found that an Australian player had stepped into touch while in possession in the leadup to the try. Another Muntz penalty goal extended the lead to four points with 14 minutes remaining, and meant Australia needed to score at least a try for victory. 'Very proud of my brothers,' said Fiji captain Tevita Ikanivere. 'It's a disappointing loss losing in the last minute, but thankful to them for giving their all today to our family and friends, our fans who came out in numbers.' The battered Wallabies have two weeks to recover before the much-anticipated first test against the Lions. On Saturday, the Lions maintained their unbeaten record on their Australian tour with a third straight win , but delivered their least convincing performance yet against a depleted New South Wales Waratahs lineup missing most of its Wallabies. The match ended with a hint of controversy, with Lions head coach Andy Farrell suggesting the Allianz Stadium surface had been intentionally over-watered by the Waratahs to disrupt his team's style of play. The Lions have a tour match against Australia's strongest provincial team, the Brumbies, in Canberra on Wednesday. ___ AP rugby:
