Ungaludan Stalin Scheme used to enroll voters into DMK: EPS

The Hindu17 hours ago
Leader of Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday alleged that the newly launched Ungaludan Stalin Scheme (USS) by the State government has been used by the ruling DMK party as a ploy to enroll voters as members of the party.
Addressing a public gathering here as part of his State-wide tour, Mr. Palaniswami said the DMK has come to a stage where the party has to do door-to-door campaigns for membership drive for 2026 assembly polls.
The former Chief Minister blamed DMK for trying to break AIADMK after the party returned to power in May 2021. Several attempts were made by the DMK to split its archrival but all its attempts were failed due to loyal support of party cadre to AIADMK leadership led by him.
The AIADMK leader said that many poor government students especially in rural areas were able to pursue medical education in the State mainly due to 7.5% internal reservation in undergraduate medical admissions that was introduced during the AIADMK regime under his tenure. 'At present, 2,818 students pursue MBBS in the State under the internal reservation that was brought during AIADMK rule. On the contrary, DMK is known only for organising car races in Chennai and a proposal to install a PEN memorial in the sea using tax payers money,' he said.

Panneerselvam criticises DMK government over restriction of free Tamil textbooks to schools in other States

Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Sunday (August 17, 2025) criticised the DMK government over the reported restriction in the free distribution of Tamil textbooks for students studying in Tamil schools functioning in other States and other countries. He cited reports that restriction in distribution of free Tamil textbooks to such schools followed rise in paper cost and in labour wages, among others. 'Due to the inefficient financial administration of the DMK government, several lakh students studying in other States stand to lose their opportunity to learn the Tamil language. Tamil schools in other States are being forced to shut down,' Mr. Panneerselvam contended in a statement. He cited claims that earlier textbooks up to ₹50 lakh were distributed every year, but it has been restricted to only 10 Tamil textbooks. He said Tamil associations were not in a position to spend a huge sum to purchase textbooks and further insisted that the Tamil Nadu government should bear the cost if it intended to promote the Tamil language across the world. 'How is it justified to stop the free distribution of Tamil textbooks that has been carried out for so many years now? It is condemnable that an ongoing programme is being stopped now.' Recalling the statements of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin over the State recording a double digit in the economic growth rate during 2024-25, Mr. Panneerselvam said attributing the financial crisis for restricting the free distribution of Tamil textbooks that costed a mere ₹50 lakh per annum, only reflected the ineffective administration of the DMK government. 'If the DMK government truly intended to promote the Tamil language and to take the language beyond the country's borders, the Chief Minister must take steps to distribute the Tamil textbooks free of cost to Tamil associations in other States and other countries,' Mr. Panneerselvam said.

DHARMAPURI: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday that Governor R N Ravi was appointed by the BJP government with the sole purpose of defaming the Tamil Nadu government and the DMK, but added that the governor had ironically helped unite the people in their love for the Tamil language and in strengthening Dravidian ideology. CM Stalin made the remarks after inaugurating the online application system for crop loans under the Cooperative Department at Adhiyamankottai. He also participated in a government event near the Combined Court Complex, where he laid the foundation stone for 1,044 projects worth Rs 512.52 crore and inaugurated 1,073 projects worth Rs 362.77 crore. Speaking at the meeting, the Chief Minister said, 'The BJP government had appointed Governor R N Ravi with the only task of defaming the Tamil Nadu government and the DMK party. He is known to put forth harsh criticism against us, will not give approval for state schemes, will recite non-existent 'Thirukural'. Most of all, he will disrespect our 'Tamil Thai Vazhthu', disrespect our students. Moreover, he would spread panic stating our education, law and order are failing.' He further alleged, 'When compared to BJP-ruled states we have been performing exceptionally well. Irritated and enraged by this, he is whining in public meetings.' Stalin added, 'We need a governor like R N Ravi here. He has been crucial in uniting us in our love for our language, uniting us as a people and instilling the Dravidian ideologies.'
