Silambarasan TR, also known as STR, lost nearly ten kilograms in ten days for his role in director Vetri Maaran's film.
Actor Silambarasan TR, popularly known as STR, had a remarkable physical transformation recently. In preparation for his role in director Vetri Maaran's next ambitious project, the actor has reportedly shed 10 kilograms in just 10 days. Silambarasan's dramatic weight loss has created a lot of buzz around the film, which is currently being called STR49.
Though official details about the film remain under wraps, the project is already drawing attention for its deep connection to Vetri Maaran's critically acclaimed film Vada Chennai (2018). While many speculated it could be a direct sequel, the director recently clarified the film's position within that universe.
In a video shared by the production house, Grass Root Film Company, Vetri Maaran explained, ''STR49′ is set in the world of Vada Chennai, but it's not Vada Chennai 2. Since Dhanush owns the copyright, I told him I was making a film with Silambarasan in the Vada Chennai world. Dhanush didn't ask for a single rupee and willingly agreed to give an NOC."
The filmmaker also addressed online speculation about a possible fallout between him and actor Dhanush, calling the rumours baseless. 'I didn't appreciate the way these rumours were circulating. Dhanush would never interfere in my creative process. When I was in financial trouble recently, it was Dhanush who arranged the funds, as an advance from a producer," Vetri Maaran added.
Adding further intrigue, sources told India Today that director Nelson Dilipkumar will make a cameo appearance in the film. Actors Kavin and Manikandan are also expected to appear in brief but significant roles. Meanwhile, Vada Chennai cast members Andrea Jeremiah, Samuthirakani, and Kishore will be reprising their characters.
Right now, the team has finished shooting a promo, and the main shoot is expected to start in the next few weeks. This film is reportedly set in the same universe as Vetri Maaran's cult classic, Vada Chennai, the gangster drama that starred Dhanush and became a massive hit.
Interestingly, Simbu was originally supposed to play the lead in Vada Chennai when it was first announced years ago. However, that plan didn't work out, and the film went ahead with Dhanush instead.
Silambarasan, widely known as Simbu or STR, is a well-known face in Tamil cinema. An actor, playback singer, and film producer, he is the eldest son of filmmaker T. Rajendar. Simbu began his film career as a child artist in his father's movies and later stepped into the spotlight as a lead actor with Kadhal Azhivathillai in 2002, a film also directed by his father. Over the years, he has delivered a range of performances and earned recognition, winning multiple awards including two Edison Awards and three SIIMA Awards.

Kept fast to avoid acting, became star due to luck, one song went viral with over 10 crore views, name is...

Dhanush, born Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja in Chennai on July 28, 1983, belongs to a noted film family—his father, Kasthuri Raja, and brother, Selvaraghavan, are both established directors. But despite his lineage, Dhanush had no love for acting. As a child, he was drawn to the kitchen, not the camera. He dreamed of becoming a chef and even rebelled when his family decided to send him to acting school. What did he do to avoid acting? Dhanush went to extremes; he stopped eating, hoping his family would change their minds. When excuses didn't work, he turned to fasting and prayer. But fate had other plans. Reluctantly, he stepped into the world of films and, in time, found his rhythm and passion. How did he make his mark in cinema? He debuted in 2002 with Thulluvadho Ilamai, directed by his father. Recognition came in 2006 with Pudhupettai, helmed by his brother, where he played a gangster. But it was Aadukalam in 2011 that earned him national acclaim and his first National Film Award for Best Actor. In 2011, he casually recorded a song titled Why This Kolaveri Di. Written in 6 minutes and recorded in 35, it became India's first YouTube hit, crossing 100 million views and turning Dhanush into a viral sensation. Bollywood and beyond Absolutely. Dhanush's Bollywood debut came with Raanjhanaa (2013), where he played a small-town boy from Banaras and left a lasting impression. He went on to star in Shamitabh alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Atrangi Re with Sara Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar. His Tamil hits include Maari, Kodi, Asuran, and Karnan, the first and last of which also won him National Awards. Dhanush's Hollywood debut In 2022, Dhanush appeared in The Gray Man, sharing screen space with global names like Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. With that, he joined the rare league of Indian actors making an international mark.

Kaantha teaser: Dulquer Salmaan locks horns with Samuthirakani in a battle of egos. Watch

Kaantha teaser: Dulquer Salmaan is all set to shed his 'heartthrob' image and embrace a very layered character that defies the traditional binaries of good and bad. In the much-anticipated Kaantha, the South Indian star will be playing a role, which is expected to explore the depth and range of his talent to the fullest. On the occasion of his 42nd birthday on Monday, the makers of the Tamil-Telugu bilingual movie unveiled its official teaser, offering a sneak peek into the alluring and eerie world of Kaantha. Focusing on the tense relationship between a film director father (Samuthirakani) and his actor son (Dulquer), the 2.12-minute teaser reveals that Kaantha also throws light on the functioning of the film industry of a bygone era. While the promo opens by showing the company Modern Studios announcing their upcoming movie, titled Saantha, touted as the first Tamil horror film, it soon cuts to show Samuthirakani and his preparation for the film. Although Dulquer plays the lead role in Saantha, it is soon revealed that the director and actor-turned-superstar, who were once inseparable, had a fallout once and no longer interact with each other. Nonetheless, as the production begins, the rift between the two widens, owing to the extreme egos that they harbour. While we see Samuthirakani choking Dulquer Salmaan and throwing chairs at him, the youngster is also no saint. Leveraging his superstar status, he slowly starts taking over the film, calling all the shots, sidelining the actual director. At the end of the teaser, we see Dulquer's character changing the title of the film from Saantha to Kaantha, thus also effectively making a hero-centric movie and not the heroine-centric one the director had planned. The movie features Bhagyashri Borse as the female lead. Written and directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, Kaantha is bankrolled jointly by Rana Daggubati, Dulquer Salmaan, Prashanth Potluri and Jom Varghese under the banners of Spirit Media and Wayfarer Films. Kaantha features music by Jhanu Chanthar, cinematography by Dani Sanchez Lopez, editing by Llewellyn Anthony Gonsalvez and art direction by Ramalingam. The film will hit screens worldwide on September 12.

Saiyaara Actor Aneet Padda Oozes Glam In Strappy Top, Glossy Lips

Last Updated: Aneet Padda, star of Saiyaara, is gaining attention for her chemistry with Ahaan Panday. She posted a cute selfie wearing a yellow strappy top. Saiyaara star Aneet Padda is everyone's latest crush in town. The actor's girl-next-door looks and her steamy chemistry with Krish Kapoor, aka Ahaan Panday, have been making headlines ever since the film's release. On Monday, Aneet posted an adorable selfie wearing a strappy top, oozing glam goals. Aneet Padda was seen wearing a yellow strappy top, which she amplified with blushed cheeks and glossy lips. With hair falling on her shoulder, the actor stared right onto the camera frame. Take a look at her photo here: While Saiyaara marks Ahaan Panday's first-ever tryst with acting, Aneet Padda already had a foot in the door with ad films and projects like Big Girls Don't Cry and Revathy's Salaam Venky, where she acted alongside Kajol and Aamir Khan. Recently, in a viral snippet from her chat with Mid-Day, Aneet spoke about bizarre experiments she tried at school – including one when she shaved both her eyebrows and plucked her eyelashes. She said, 'I don't know if it's a school memory exactly, but I remember this one time we had our annual theatre going on. And for some weird reason, when I came back home and had to remove all of my makeup, I decided to also shave both of my eyebrows and pluck like eight of my eyelashes. Then my mother comes home and she's like, 'Beta, what am I going to do with you? You have to go to school tomorrow.' And I'm like, 'I don't know, maybe it's trendy.' And ten years later, people are actually shaving their eyebrows now, so maybe I was onto something back then." Meanwhile, Saiyaara broke records by earning Rs 21.25 crore on Day 1. The film has outperformed the first day collections of Murder 2 (Rs 6.95 crore), Aashiqui 2 (Rs 6.10 crore), and Half Girlfriend (Rs 10.30 crore). The film has also surpassed the the collections of Ek Villain (2014), which collected Rs 16 crore on its opening day, by becoming Mohit Suri's biggest opener ever. From 2225 screens in week one, Saiyaara is now running in packed 3650 screens. The film has crossed Rs 300 crore on the global box office. Saiyaara is backed by YRF and directed by Mohit Suri. The film released on July 18, sans much promotions. First Published: July 28, 2025, 20:06 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
