Ripon fire and police station reopens after £1m refurbishment
Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police, Tim Forber, said the "first class" facilities on Stonebridgegate were part of continued efforts to boost its neighbourhood policing service."The police station in Ripon closed a number of years ago and we'd had a joint building with our fire service colleagues, but it was out of date and in very poor condition," he said. "It was not a fit place for the public to come, particularly if they were a victim of crime, and absolutely not a place where my officers were properly looked after."
Jonathan Dyson, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service's chief fire officer, said the project had been more than a year in the making. "We hit one massive snag, which was that we found more extensive asbestos in the building than we anticipated," he said."It delayed things a little bit but it was right that we did it and it's credit to the teams and our support staff."

Woman in her 60s found dead at bottom of cliff just hours after couple's bodies
A woman in her 60s has been found dead at the bottom of cliffs below Whitby Abbey. It is the third death in the area in the space of 24 hours after a couple in their 40s died after falling from the cliff. The woman's body was found yesterday just hours after the couple's bodies were found. Her body was found by a member of the public just after midday on Thursday. Emergency services including police, ambulance, coastguard, mountain rescue and lifeboat teams were all called to the scene. Rescue crews were called in to help with the recovery of her body due to the location and she was taken to the lifeboat house. It is believed the woman fell from the cliff shortly before her death. A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: 'We are investigating the sudden death of a woman aged in her 60s whose body was spotted by a member of the public below Whitby Abbey at 12.53pm yesterday. 'Police, ambulance, coastguard, mountain rescue and lifeboat teams were called into assist with the incident, which is believed to have involved a fall from the cliff. 'Due to the rocky location and high tide, mountain rescue assisted in recovering the woman's body to the lifeboat before being taken to the lifeboat house. 'Enquiries are ongoing to investigate the circumstances for a coroner's report. 'The sudden death is not believed to be suspicious. The woman's family have been informed and are receiving support. More Trending 'Witnesses to the incident or anyone with information that could assist officers, are urged to call North Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting reference number 12250142097.' The police investigation is ongoing before a report will be sent to the coroner. On Wednesday, a couple died after they fell from the cliff by Whitby Abbey. The bodies of the man and woman, believed to be in their 40s, were airlifted from the beach in Whitby as the tide came in. Tulip Siddiq has had no ‘official confirmation' of Bangladesh trial, say lawyers
The Labour MP is due to face corruption allegations in the country on August 11, according to media reports. In April, it was reported that Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had sought an arrest warrant over allegations that Ms Siddiq illegally received a 7,200 square feet plot of land in the country's capital, Dhaka. Ms Siddiq's aunt, Sheikh Hasina, served as prime minister of Bangladesh until she was ousted in the summer of 2024, since when she has been living in exile in India. A statement released by Ms Siddiq's lawyers attacked the 'longstanding politically motivated smear campaign'. 'For nearly a year now, the Bangladesh authorities have been making false allegations against Tulip Siddiq,' the statement said. 'Ms Siddiq has not been contacted or received any official communication from the court and does not and has never owned any plot of land in Purbachal. 'This longstanding politically motivated smear campaign has included repeated briefings to the media, a refusal to respond to formal legal correspondence, and a failure to seek any meeting with or question Ms Siddiq during the recent visit by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to the United Kingdom. Such conduct is wholly incompatible with the standards of a fair, lawful, and credible investigation. 'In light of these facts, it is now time for the Chief Adviser and the ACC to end this baseless and defamatory effort to damage Ms Siddiq's reputation and obstruct her work in public service.' A source close to Ms Siddiq said that media reports published on Thursday were the first she had heard of the trial. The Hampstead and Highgate MP resigned from her ministerial job in the Treasury earlier this year following an investigation by the Prime Minister's ethics adviser into her links to Ms Hasina's regime, which was overthrown last year. She came under scrutiny over her use of properties in London linked to her aunt's allies. Although Sir Laurie Magnus concluded that she had not breached the Ministerial Code, he advised Sir Keir Starmer to reconsider Ms Siddiq's responsibilities. Ms Siddiq chose to resign, saying she had become 'a distraction' from the Government's agenda.
