Muhlestein wasn't the only recent Northern California lottery winner, nor the biggest. In Sacramento, one lottery player got a belated holiday surprise. Ashley Eugene received a $20 Maximum Millions Scratchers game from her father as a Christmas gift.
She waited about a week and a half to scratch it, scratched the ticket and stared at in disbelief.
'I kept looking at it and making sure it was correct,' she said. 'My dad happened to be there with me, so he looked at it and made sure it was correct. Then, a couple days later, we took it to the store, and they checked it and verified it was a winner.'
The lucky ticket, which was sold at A1 Mart at 2550 W. El Camino Avenue in Sacramento, turned out to be worth $5 million.

Man buys lottery ticket to get change for pizza tip — and hits $1 million jackpot

A man who bought a California Lottery scratch-off ticket to break a $100 bill for a tip on his pizza order came away $1 million richer, officials reported. McKinley Nelson ordered a pizza for his wife but found that he needed change to leave a cash tip when they arrived at a Round Table restaurant in Winters to pick it up, the California Lottery said in a Tuesday, June 10, news release. So he went next door to Winters Wine & Liquor before picking up their food, lottery officials said. 'I had a $100 bill. So, I got two tickets,' Nelson told lottery officials. 'I think it was $20, and I went to the truck and started scratching.' One, a Loteria Grande scratcher, seemed promising. 'I think this one's a million, but I'm not sure,' Nelson said he told his wife. He was correct. 'So, my wife almost had a heart attack,' Nelson said. 'And then we had to go in and buy the pizza. It was all because of her, she's the one that likes the pizza.' Nelson, 72, a retired veteran, plans to use the money to pay off his home, put some in savings and buy a camper van, lottery officials said. He said he's been playing the lottery for 40 years. 'It took a long time to win,' he said. Winters is about a 30-mile drive west from Sacramento.

He purchased the ticket at the Vintage Wine Shoppe & Liquor on the corner of Clayton Road and Roslyn Drive. At $30 a ticket, the price to play $10,000,000 Super Bonus is among the higher costs for California Lottery scratchers games, though clearly Muhlestein's return on investment was quite lucrative. Officials also recently announced that Ashley Eugene learned that she struck it rich with a ticket worth $5 million purchased in Sacramento at A1 Mart on W. El Camino Avenue. Eugene received the lucky scratcher from her father during the holidays as a Christmas gift, but she held off on checking if she won in the $20 Maximum Millions game, the California Lottery said last week. "I waited about a week and a half and just happened to be doing laundry," Eugene told lottery officials. When she finally got around to scratching up the ticket to unveil the game's numbers, she was struck with disbelief. "I kept looking at it and making sure it was correct," Eugene recalled, saying her dad just happened to be with her when she learned she would be a millionaire. "So he looked at it and made sure it was correct," she added.
