Bournemouth Suffer Big Blow, To Miss Justin Kluivert In Premier League Opener

NDTV3 days ago
Justin Kluivert and Ryan Christie will miss Bournemouth's season opener at defending champion Liverpool, manager Andoni Iraola confirmed Thursday. Kluivert, the team's top scorer in the Premier League a season ago as the Cherries recorded their highest points total, has missed preseason games because of a calf injury. 'Justin hasn't been training with us, so he's out," Iraola said ahead of Friday's game at Anfield. The Netherlands forward netted 12 goals in league play and 13 overall last season. Christie, a 30-year-old Scotland midfielder, has been training with the team following a groin injury.
'But I think it's too early for him because he hasn't done any preseason,' Iraola said.
Center back Bafodé Diakité joined Bournemouth this week from Lille, but Iraola said he hadn't decided if the Frenchman would face Liverpool.
'He is physically definitely ready, he has done a complete preseason with Lille. It's a matter now of getting all the concepts quickly,' he said.
Bournemouth sold almost its entire first-choice backline — center backs Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi and left back Milos Kerkez, as well as goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga — to generate around $200 million. Kerkez moved to Liverpool.
'In the end, you are playing the champions in the first day of the season, away. It doesn't get more difficult for this,' Iraola said.
The status of winger Dango Ouattara, who has been linked with a move to Brentford, was unclear.
'It's true that I don't know what's going to happen,' Iraola said. 'We are going day by day. I will ask the club if he can play tomorrow, and if he can travel."

Newcastle United sign Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa in $53 million deal

Newcastle United have strengthened their midfield ahead of a Champions League return by signing Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa for a reported $53 million. The 24-year-old midfielder, who came through Villa's academy and made 167 appearances in all competitions, becomes the Magpies' fourth signing of the summer transfer window. Ramsey, who has signed a long-term deal at St James' Park, will wear the No. 41 shirt this season. He joins a squad already bolstered by the arrivals of winger Anthony Elanga, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, and defender Malick Thiaw. Ramsey's journey so far Having graduated from Villa's youth system, Ramsey made his senior debut in 2019 and went on to establish himself as a regular in the first team. He scored 17 goals during his Villa career and made ten appearances in the UEFA Champions League last season. The midfielder also has international pedigree, having represented England across various age levels and winning the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2023 alongside Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon. Jacob Ramsey is a Mag! — Newcastle United (@NUFC) August 17, 2025 Why it matters Newcastle's decision to invest in Ramsey reflects both their immediate ambitions in Europe and their long-term strategy of building around young, versatile players. After being rejected by multiple players this year, Newcastle needed some reinforcements before the window shuts at the end of August. With Alexander Isak linked with a move to Liverpool, the club has shifted focus to reinforcing other areas of the pitch, ensuring depth and stability for manager Eddie Howe's plans. Ramsey's versatility and attacking directness offer Newcastle a fresh dimension in midfield. His arrival underlines the club's intent to compete at the highest level while nurturing players with proven Premier League and European experience. Player's perspective Calling the move 'a big step' in his career, Ramsey said the decision was straightforward once he learned of Howe's interest. 'His track record of developing players, especially those who have gone on to become internationals, speaks for itself,' he said. Ramsey added that he had always found Newcastle tough opponents while at Villa, describing the team as 'full of energy, athletic and supported by passionate fans.' He said he felt his style of play would suit Newcastle's approach. ???? (1) New message from Jacob Ramsey — Newcastle United (@NUFC) August 17, 2025 Howe's endorsement Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe praised the signing, stressing both Ramsey's experience and potential. 'Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad,' Howe said. 'He fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football behind him. He has proven to be a real threat in recent seasons and performed strongly in the Champions League. We believe he will be a major asset for us.' The bigger picture Ramsey's arrival marks another important step in Newcastle's evolution under Howe, as the club seeks to establish itself as a consistent contender domestically and in Europe. The Magpies' transfer strategy has centred on blending youth with experience, securing players with room to develop while maintaining competitiveness at the top level.

PSG edge Nantes in Ligue 1 opener, Giroud scores debut goal for Lille

Vitinha broke the deadlock with the aid of a lucky deflection as Paris Saint-Germain began its Ligue 1 title defense with an unconvincing 1-0 win at Nantes. Champions League winner PSG looked short of ideas, just as it had for long spells against Europa League champion Tottenham during the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday. Portugal midfielder Vitinha collected the ball about 20 meters out and his strike clipped defender Chidozie Awaziem as he tried to duck under the ball, before wrong-footing goalkeeper Anthony Lopes in the 67th minute. That proved enough for coach Luis Enrique's side, which was again without goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italy No. 1 wants to leave PSG after it bought Lucas Chevalier from Lille and has been linked with a move to Manchester City. PSG A scrappy first half saw little creativity, and neither Chevalier or Lopes had much to do. Nantes coach Luis Castro may regret leaving his best striker Matthis Abline on the bench until the 60th minute. Abline is pursuing a move away from Nantes, which looked much sharper when he came on. Other matchesVeteran striker Olivier Giroud took only 11 minutes to score on his return to Ligue 1, but it was not enough as his new side Lille drew 3-3 at Brest. Giroud was picked out by Felix Correia's clever pass behind the defense and finished with a left-footed shot under the goalkeeper. The 38-year-old Giroud became Lille's oldest scorer in Ligue 1 and he lasted the whole game. It was a special moment for me and I'm happy to be back in Ligue 1, Giroud told broadcaster DAZN. The coach asked me several times how I was feeling and I said I wanted to play until the end. Midfielder Hakon Arnar Haraldsson made it 2-0 before Kamory Doumbia scored twice to level the match. Lille regained the lead midway through the second half when Ngal'ayel Mukau scored following a corner, but Julien Le Cardinal equalized. Striker Esteban Lepaul's early goal was enough for Angers to win 1-0 at home to newly promoted Paris FC despite having midfielder Louis Mouton sent off in the 57th. Striker Lassine Sinayoko scored early in the second half as Auxerre won 1-0 at home against Lorient, which was promoted as Ligue 2 winner. Metz started with 16-year-old prospect Brian Madjo in attack but conceded a late goal in a 1-0 home loss to Strasbourg. New signing Joaquin Panichelli scored for the visitors. Back to FranceGiroud joined Lille after a disappointing spell with Los Angeles FC. He previously made his name with AC Milan, Chelsea and Arsenal the club he joined from Montpellier after winning the French title in 2012 and scoring 21 league goals that season. Giroud is France's all-time leading men's scorer with 57 goals and won the 2018 World Cup with Les Bleus. I wanted to challenge myself one more time, Giroud said. Premier League: Nottingham Forest goalkeeping coach gets six stitches on head after goal celebration goes wrong

Joy turned to pain in an instant for Nottingham Forest goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa, whose celebration of Chris Wood's opener against Brentford ended with six stitches and a dizzy spell for him in its first Premier League game of the new season. Wood's fifth-minute goal, poked home following a corner, sparked jubilant scenes in the Forest dugout at the City Ground. However, Barbosa's enthusiasm turned painful when he smacked his head on the dugout during the celebrations. The club's medical staff swiftly treated a nasty cut on his head. 'He has six stitches! It was a nasty one. A bad one. He was dizzy,' Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo told reporters on Sunday. The 3-1 victory marked Forest's first opening-day Premier League win since the 1996-97 season, when it defeated Coventry City.
