Kelvin Sheppard praises development of Lions CB Terrion Arnold

USA Today3 days ago
As a rookie, cornerback Terrion Arnold had a fine season. He flashed some potential and built a nice foundation to continue developing. Year 2 could see even more good things from Arnold and defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard is very excited to see his progression.
During his media availability Thursday, Sheppard praised the second-year cornerback out of Alabama when discussing how he wants his defense to dictate offenses and discussed the depth of his secondary.
"Terrion Arnold took a huge leap in my opinion this offseason," Sheppard said. "He progressed during his rookie year. But he's come in, not only this offseason, but this training camp looking like a different guy. His body's more developed, but also from the neck up, the mental aspect of the game. He's seeing it faster. He's feeling the routes faster. So that's a guy I've already seen the leap in."
Arnold started 15 games last season as a rookie and played in 16. He had 60 tackles and 10 passes defended. If his development continues at the rate Sheppard is suggesting, the sky seems to be the limit for Arnold, who will have a new running mate in DJ Reed this season. The former Jet signed in free agency to effectively replace Carlton Davis, who left for the New England Patriots. Having Reed will take some pressure off of Arnold, but Arnold is ready to show he is more than capable of taking on opposing No. 1 wide receivers.

Former Patrick Mahomes teammate makes admission on Tom Brady

"Patrick is definitely a close second, he's closing in"Tyrann Mathieu on where his former teammate stands in his GOAT QB rankings 🐐@heykayadams | @Mathieu_Era Former Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu gave an honest response when asked if he believed quarterback Patrick Mahomes was the greatest of all time. While he does think the three-time Super Bowl champion is closing in on that title, he isn't ready to put him ahead of former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. "I would say he's a great quarterback, but greatest of all time, I think that's still reserved for Brady," Mathieu said on Up & Adams. "And I think with Brady, that's just longevity. That's respect. That's just playing against this guy on the biggest stages. He was one of the most competitive, accurate. He just had a single mindset to win—win by any means necessary. He was always a challenge to go up against. Being the greatest of all time, I don't think it's like an eight, nine, 10-year thing." Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, has beaten Mahomes twice in the postseason—once in the 2018 AFC Championship Game and once more at Super Bowl LV. He also won a Super Bowl with two different football teams after leaving the Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. Mahomes is still only 29 years old and not completely out of the race. Mathieu acknowledged his former teammate might one day go down as the greatest of all time if he stays on his current trajectory. But that's a big hill to climb in a league where teams improve every year. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Cowboys quarterback takes swipe at former teammates as he embraces fresh start

The Dallas Cowboys acquired Joe Milton from the New England Patriots in the offseason to add some more depth behind starting quarterback Dak Prescott for the 2025 season. Milton spoke glowingly about his new Cowboys teammates and took a swipe at the Patriots' locker room in the process. New England selected Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and he was in a quarterback room with Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett last season. Jerod Mayo was the head coach for the Patriots last season. "Dak is a great leader. All respect to him. He literally goes out of his way to help me, no matter if the coach is talking in the meeting, he literally goes out of his way to help. I've been in another building. I know how that goes. It's just very different over here," Milton said on Friday, via The Athletic. He said he "preferred" to have a fresh start somewhere new. "That was something me and my team put together. They were able to get it done, I really didn't have to do much or say much. So just shout out to my agent, that's pretty much it." Milton only appeared in one game for the Patriots last season. He was 22-of-29 with 241 passing yards and one touchdown pass. He's considered to have massive potential, should he ever get a shot at becoming a starter in the NFL. Milton is projected to be the backup quarterback heading into the regular season behind Prescott. Will Grier is slotted at QB3. Prescott will look to stay healthy for Dallas. He only managed to play in eight games in 2024.

Former Patriots CB reportedly signing with AFC East rival

Former New England Patriots starting cornerback Jack Jones is reportedly returning to the AFC East on a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Disaster struck in the Dolphins' secondary after veteran cornerback Artie Burns tore his ACL on the first day of training camp. The team also traded seven-time Pro Bowl corner Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a blockbuster deal that also included tight end Jonnu Smith in June. They got star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick in return, but the cupboard was left bare at cornerback. Now enters Jones, a former Patriots fourth-round draft pick. The latest stint for the 27-year-old defensive back was with the Las Vegas Raiders. He started in a total of 19 games and recorded 94 tackles, five interceptions and 20 pass deflections during his run with the team. Jones won't have long to wait to face his former team with the Patriots scheduled to visit South Beach in Week 2 of the regular season. The rematch between the division rivals is slated for a date to be determined to close out the season in Week 18. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
