Is the Big Ten on the Verge of Claiming Dominance in College Football?

Fox Sports6 days ago
For years, the dominant conference in college football has been the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Since the start of the College Football Playoff era in 2014, the SEC has won six of 11 national championships.
However, the tide could be turning, as a new superior conference may emerge, according to FOX's Colin Cowherd.
The past two national champions have come from the Big Ten: Michigan in 2023 and Ohio State last year. Could this indicate a power shift in college football?
With an expanded conference, the Big Ten conference now includes Oregon, USC, UCLA and Washington.
While UCLA isn't a significant player in terms of conference impact, the advantages of NIL and revenue sharing make being a college student in Los Angeles more appealing.
However, UCLA will still have to compete with crosstown rival USC, which has more recent success and a bigger brand.
In its first year in the Big Ten, Oregon won the conference championship, defeating Penn State 45-37 and capping off a perfect regular season. Oregon earned a first-round bye in the newly formatted CFP, while two other Big Ten teams prepared for their first-round games.
Penn State easily handled SMU, 38-10. Ohio State, coming off an upset loss to unranked rival Michigan, faced Tennessee in a highly anticipated matchup.
In the first Big Ten vs. SEC game of the new CFP era, this matchup served as a measurement of the two superior conferences. The Buckeyes routed Tennessee, 42-17.
On their path to another national championship, the Buckeyes faced another SEC opponent, the Texas Longhorns. Ohio State and Texas met in the semifinals; while the Buckeyes didn't dominate the Longhorns as decisively as they did against Tennessee, they still won by two scores and held Texas to 14 points — the lowest scored against them since November 2022.
Cowherd pointed out that with NIL, the Big Ten now has money to spend and isn't afraid to do so.
Last year, Ohio State had the most expensive roster, spending over $20 million on its team. This year, they again rank among the top spenders in the sport, coming in at No. 3, with three other Big Ten schools close behind: No. 4 Oregon, and Michigan and USC tied for seventh.
In 2023, on their route to a national championship, Michigan defeated Alabama in the CFP Semifinals at the Rose Bowl, 27-20. Last season, in a "down" year for both programs, they met again in the ReliaQuest Bowl and it was the same result. Michigan defeated Alabama 19-13.
To kick off the 2025-26 season, some of the top teams in the Big Ten and SEC are set to meet in Week 1. Ohio State hosts Texas in a rematch of the Cotton Bowl Semifinal, and the Buckeyes are favored -2.5 in this highly anticipated Week 1 matchup.

Spartans reportedly in communication with high-end 4-star SF prospect

A major small forward prospect in the 2026 class has reportedly been in talks with Michigan State basketball recently. Michigan State was one of a few schools Southside Hoops recently mentioned as being in contact with four-star small forward Anthony Felesi. According to Southside Hoops, Felesi has been "hearing" from Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke, Purdue, Michigan and Missouri recently. Felesi is a high-end four-star prospect, with a recruiting rating of 98.27 in 247Sports' composite system. He ranks as the No. 20 small forward and No. 47 overall prospect in 247Sports' composite rankings. He is also listed as the No. 2 player from Utah. Michigan State has not yet formally extended an offer to Felesi, per 247Sports. He does, however, hold offers from more than 10 schools, including Louisville, UCLA, BYU, LSU, Cal, Oregon, UNLV, Utah, Villanova, Utah State and USF. Michigan State currently holds one commitment in its 2026 class in point guard Carlos Medlock Jr. So we should keep an eye on the Spartans potentially further pursuing Felesi as a small forward prospect. Sherrone Moore seeks undefeated Michigan season, not just in 2025, but every year

Despite being the protégé to Jim Harbaugh, Sherrone Moore isn't getting the same love as, say, David Shaw had after Harbaugh left Stanford. Yes, the Cardinal still thrived in the immediate aftermath, but Shaw also still had Andrew Luck to lead the charge on offense -- Moore wasn't dealt such a hand. Yet, we see him recruiting at an elite level -- even better than Harbaugh -- while also getting wins over Michigan's rivals, even in a year when it appeared the Wolverines had no business doing so. Moore may have led Michigan to an 8-5 record in 2024, but that's not his intent. With his recruiting and transfer portal prowess, he's looking to build a monster. And though he doesn't get the same benefit of the doubt as, say, Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame, or Kalen DeBoer at Alabama, he's seeking excellence commensurate with the maize and blue's ceiling. "I'm hell-bent on being undefeated every year. That's the standard," Moore said at Big Ten media days. "You don't want to lose any game. That's the goal (as a coach. You want to be undefeated every year. So for me, yeah, the standard is not 8-5, and the goal is to win every single game and to be successful and hoist the trophy again. Because once you win one, you get greedy. You want to win another. And that's the goal over here. "But we know it's going to take work, so can't be worried about the past, can't be worried about tomorrow. Because they don't owe you anything, so all we're worried about is today, and that's all we're going to do is work to be the best version of ourselves today." Michigan finished the season better than any team not named Ohio State in 2024 -- and that's because it beat the eventual national champion Buckeyes. That carried over to the ReliaQuest Bowl, where the Wolverines shocked Alabama -- a team bringing in all of its starters -- despite being significantly shorthanded. It was a reflection of the head coach, as his confidence going into those weeks permeated through the locker room (though that's not something he'd admit). He never lost his team, and they continued to believe, and it showed on the field. Moore recounted the killer instinct that his Wolverines had and why they were able to overachieve compared to expectations. "Just the instilled confidence that they have and the confidence that they got in those games. It wasn't a magic potion or something that we did, and it wasn't the way we changed practice because we practiced the same," Moore said. "But the energy, the focus, the level of confidence that they had in those games was definitely different than the others, and we'll just continue to apply it like that and just work. The leaders on the team saw it. The leaders on the team see it and continue to let our leaders be leaders and empower them as much as possible to make sure we continue that." Despite the late-season success and Moore's 4-0 record as Michigan's interim coach in 2023, he's not given much of a chance, according to many. In Big Ten head coaching rankings, CBS Sports listed Moore as the 15th-best in the conference, even though he's one of only two in the Big Ten who have beaten a Ryan Day-led Ohio State team (Dan Lanning is the other, though he also lost to the Buckeyes). But if his closing statement in 2024 is any indication, that ranking, and his national perception, will be changing in short order.

Claressa Shields unanimously outpoints Lani Daniels in Detroit bout, defends heavyweight belts

Claressa Shields unanimously outpointed Lani Daniels on Saturday night, successfully defending all her belts as the first undisputed heavyweight champion in women's boxing. The 30-year-old Shields, a two-time Olympic champion, improved to 17-0 in front of 15,366 fans at Little Caesars Arena. The 36-year-old Daniels, the IBF light heavyweight champion, dropped to 11-3-2. She had won seven in a row. Former super-welterweight champion Tony Harrison beat Edward Diaz of the Dominican Republic by unanimous decision after being knocked down in the ninth round of the 10-round fight. Harrison, who is from Detroit, improved to 30-4-1 in his first fight since losing his belt to Tim Tszyu more than 10 years ago. In the main event, Daniels danced and shuffled along the ropes for two rounds to stay away from Shields, who was patient until unleashing a flurry of combinations late in both rounds. Daniels didn't run in the following rounds — and Shields took advantage with punishing blows to the body and head. Daniels fought for the first time outside of her native New Zealand and was not welcomed in the Motor City, where Shields is a fan favorite. Shields, elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, has revived big-time boxing in Detroit. The city with a rich history in the sport that includes Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson and Thomas Hearns went decades without relevant fights. The Red Wings and Pistons moved into Little Caesars Arena in 2017, but the arena didn't have a boxing card until 2023 when Shields was the headliner and beat Maricela Cornejo. Shields was back at Little Caesars Arena last summer, knocking out WBC heavyweight champion Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse in front of about 12,000 fans and she drew a bigger crowd in her latest Earlier this month, Katie Taylor beat Amanda Serrano for the third time in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 19,000 at Madison Square Garden in New York in the arena's first all-women's card. Shields won gold medals at 165 pounds at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, making her the first boxer from the United States to win consecutive Olympic medals. Professionally, she has earned titles in five divisions from 154 to 200 pounds. Note: The video above originally aired June 11, 2025.
