Awais shares power sector reforms, plans with World Bank
During the meeting, the minister shared that Pakistan is set to introduce a competitive electricity market in the near future. All preparatory work for this transition is being completed.
He noted that an Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) has been established to manage the market operations, and experienced professionals are being appointed to ensure its effective functioning. The government will no longer act as the sole purchaser of electricity.
Highlighting key financial reforms in the power sector, the minister informed the delegation that there has been a significant improvement in revenue recovery. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that electricity subsidies are directed only to those who truly need them and requested the World Bank's support in implementing targeted subsidy mechanisms.
Bjerde endorsed the minister's approach, affirming that the World Bank fully supports the idea of better targeted subsidies and is committed to assisting Pakistan's power sector in this regard.
The minister also pointed out that Pakistan currently has a surplus of approximately 7,000 megawatts of electricity. He proposed that providing this excess power to industries, even at marginal rates would make it the cheapest industrial electricity in the region. He stressed the need for support from the World Bank and other development partners to capitalise on this opportunity, which could significantly boost industrial production in the country.
Bjerde agreed with the proposal, noting that utilising surplus electricity at marginal cost is far more beneficial than allowing it to go unused.
The minister mentioned that during the winter season, electricity was already supplied at these lower rates without any subsidy, and the goal now is to extend this model throughout the year. He added that the power sector is moving towards the implementation of digital and smart systems from the feeder to the transformer level, and emphasised the crucial role of World Bank support in this digital transformation.
The delegation was also briefed on the ongoing privatisation efforts in the power sector. The minister shared that the privatisation process for three electricity distribution companies is currently underway and is expected to be concluded by the end of this year.
He also discussed broader restructuring efforts within the sector, highlighting that procurement and tendering systems have been upgraded to meet international standards, enhancing transparency and merit.
Additional measures have been introduced to expedite the completion of ongoing projects.

PESCO launches Pension Management System
PESHAWAR: In a major step towards digital transformation and transparency, the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) has launched it's first-ever PESCO Pension Management System (PPMS); a comprehensive software solution in-house. The software was developed by Arif Hameed, Assistant Manager ERP under the leadership of Finance Director PESCO, Yasir Naseem, according to a statement here on Wednesday. This landmark development replaces the company's manual pension system, ensuring swift, transparent, and hassle-free processing of pension cases. The PPMS will significantly reduce the processing time for pension applications, eliminating long-standing delays and challenges faced by pensioners under the old system. Recognizing this achievement, Chairman PESCO Board of Directors, Himayatullah Khan, commended Arif Hameed for his outstanding contribution and awarded him a Certificate of Appreciation. Board Member Fazal-e-Khaliq also presented him with an Honorary Shield as a token of recognition for his commendable efforts. With this initiative, PESCO became the first power distribution company to introduce a comprehensive digital pension management system, setting a new benchmark in public service efficiency and digital transformation within the power sector. This software will manage the complete pension process from initial case preparation to final payment and monthly pension disbursements processed through PPMS eliminate the risk of duplicate payments. It will provide one-click access to detailed payment records for transparency and audit readiness and will automatically make calculations and ensure compliance with pension regulations for all case types. Child Protection Institute marks Independence Day with zeal
ISLAMABAD: The Child Protection Institute (CPI) celebrated Pakistan's 78th Independence Day on Wednesday with fervour, joy, and a strong message of unity, equality, and hope for the future, said a press release. The event brought together children residing at the Institute, staff members, and the management for a day filled with national spirit and meaningful reflections. The celebration began with the children waving national flags and singing popular national songs that echoed through the halls of the Institute. Their voices carried a mix of pride and excitement, setting the tone for the day. This was followed by a cake-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion, symbolizing unity and shared happiness. To engage the young participants in Pakistan's history, CPI staff held a short quiz on the creation of Pakistan. The children eagerly answered the questions. They also explained the meaning of the national flag's colours, noting that green represents the Muslim majority, white symbolizes the rights of religious minorities, and the crescent and star signify progress and light. Speaking to the gathering, the children shared their vision for the country they call home. They expressed their desire for a Pakistan free from poverty and hunger, where every child has access to quality education and opportunities to grow. 'We want a Pakistan where no child goes to bed hungry and where schools welcome every child,' one participant said, earning applause from others. Director General of CPI, Rabeea Hadi, addressed the children with an inspiring message about the struggles endured during the creation of Pakistan. She spoke about the vision of a country founded on Islamic principles of justice, equality, and compassion. 'Pakistan was not created without sacrifice,' she reminded them. 'It was built on the dream of a place where every citizen is treated equally, without any difference of colour, caste, or religion — as Islam teaches us. This is the principle we must follow here in the Institute and in our lives.' Hadi encouraged the children to dream big and work hard toward achieving their goals despite challenges.
