Malcolm Denmark group buys another local newspaper

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission says it has been formally notified of the proposed acquisition of the Galway-based newspaper by Formpress Publishing, which is part of the Iconic group.
The Tribune was first published in May 1909. Two decades later the group produced the Sentinel, which finished publication in 2014, and the Galway City Tribune was added by the group in 1984. Combined weekly circulation is believed to be in excess of 10,000, and its associated website is connachttribune.ie.
The wider group also includes the radio station Galway Bay FM. Reports have linked Bauer Media to its possible purchase. Three Galway families – the Allens, Naughtons and Hickeys – own the group, and it was reported last year that they had hired IBI Corporate Finance to find a buyer for its assets.
The financial details of Iconic's purchase of the Connacht Tribune are not known. The valuations of newspapers have fallen precipitously over the last two decades, due to declining print circulations and reduced advertising revenue.
Pre-tax profits at Formpress Publishing rose to €1.7m in the year to the end of September 2023, according to the most recent accounts filed. The company employed an average of 142 people during that 12-month reporting period, up by three on the previous year.
Formpress owns about 25 local and regional newspaper titles, including the Mayo News, Kilkenny People, Limerick Leader, Derry News, Dundalk Democrat, Leitrim Observer and the Midland Tribune.
Last October the competition authority approved the purchase by Formpress of D&D Media, owner of the Inishowen Independent. Such deals also need approval by the minister for media.
While there may be some concerns about an over consolidation of local media in the hands of a few players, there will also be official recognition that some regional newspapers will not survive financially unless they become part of bigger stables.
In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, Mr Denmark said he was 'passionate about local media' and sees a future in it.
'I am not giving up on it. We are getting a lot of traction and we are impressed by our numbers online,' he said.
Confirming his interest in acquiring the Connacht Tribune, he said: 'The team in Galway is a particularly good one. They are the largest selling of the weekly regional papers now in the country and that is down to producing a very, very good paper every week.'

Milestone moment as Glencar starts work on new Bidfood distribution hub

WORK has begun to build a new temperature-controlled distribution hub for the national food service provider Bidfood. Hertfordshire-based Glencar will deliver the new depot in Durham, which will total 86,098 sq. ft., including cold store, chill store and a chilled marshalling area alongside a large ambient warehouse. The contract will also see the Irish-founded firm deliver a two-storey main office, transport pod office, refuse and plant areas, and an external yard. An image of what the new Bidfood depot in Durham will look like (Pic: Glencar) It marks Glencar's second project for Bidfood, following the completion of their Worcester distribution facility in spring 2025. A ceremony was held this month as the first structural steel was installed at the site of the £20.5 million project off Drum Road in Chester-le-Street. The facility will serve as Bidfood's new Northeast regional hub, consolidating operations from Gateshead. 'We are incredibly pleased to work again with Bidfood on this new strategic development,' Glencar's North Regional Director Tom Kearsley said. 'It's great to mark progress with the installation of steelwork and to see the facility beginning to take shape,' he added. 'This project reflects our strong track record in delivering complex cold chain and logistics infrastructure, and we look forward to seeing it through to completion.' The new site is set to bolster Bidfood's regional logistics operations while accommodating team growth as the business scales. 'We're delighted to be working with Glencar again and to see progress taking shape on what will be a flagship facility for Bidfood in the region,' Bidfood's Chief Operating Officer Mark Wood said. 'This development marks a significant milestone in strengthening our operations across the Northeast,' he added. 'Further, it reflects our long-term commitment to investing in infrastructure supporting our customers and people. 'This new Durham site will allow us to consolidate services, improve efficiencies and futureproof our regional network. 'It also presents the opportunity for local employment, with the potential to grow our team.' See More: Bidfood, Durham, Food Distribution, Glencar

Fonterra elevates milk price forecast for 2025

Fonterra Co-operative Group Ltd has increased its 2024/25 season forecast farmgate milk price. The announcement which came yesterday (Wednesday, August 20) saw the New Zealand milk processor elevate its forecast from NZ$10.00/kilogram of milk solids (kgMS) to $10.15/kgMS. As a result, the co-operative's range has narrowed from $9.70-$10.30/kgMS to $10.10-$10.20/kgMS. Fonterra chief executive Miles Hurrell said he is pleased to be in aposition to increase the forecast by 15 cents (NZ$). Hurrell said: 'We began the season with a wide forecast range to account for potential volatility in commodity prices and exchange rates resulting from geopolitical dynamics. 'However, global dairy trade prices have remained stable, and when coupled with our well contracted sales book, we have been able to increase our forecast farmgate milk price across the season.' Despite the strong global dairy trade prices, the CEO added: 'It's still early in the season and the risk of volatility remains, which is reflected in the wide forecast range." Fonterra confirmed that they will release the final farmgate milk price for the 2024/25 season this September. The New Zealand-based dairy processor will announce its FY25 annual results at the same time Meanwhile, the co-operative announced that it has also retained the $10.00/kgMS forecast for the current 2025/26 season and narrowed the range from $8.00-$11.00/kgMS to $9.00-$11.00/kgMS. Fonterra added that its FY25 forecast earnings of 65-75 cents per share remain unchanged. In June, Fonterra announced a profit after tax of $1.158 billion in the third quarter (Q3) of 2025, up NZ$119 million or 11% on the same time to the previous year (2024). At the time, this led to the dairy processor narrowing its year-end earnings range to from the 55-75 cents per share figure provided in March, to the current 65-75 cents per share figure. Commenting in June on these changes, Hurrell said: 'We've delivered strong shareholder returns through the 2025 financial year (FY25), including a 22-cent interim dividend, and as we get closer to the end of the year, we are focused on maintaining this momentum."
