2nd North East Geology and Mining Ministers' Conclave in Guwahati starting Friday

India Gazette26-06-2025
New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): In a major step towards unlocking the mineral and coal potential of the North Eastern Region, the Ministry of Mines, in collaboration with the Ministry of Coal and the Government of Assam, is organising the 2nd North East Geology and Mining Ministers' Conclave on June 27-28 in Guwahati.
The conclave, being held under the Government of India's vision of 'Viksit Bharat,' will witness participation from all eight North Eastern states.
The Chief Minister of Assam will grace the occasion as Chief Guest, alongside Mining and Geology Ministers from across the region.
The event aims to promote sustainable and scientific mining, improve the ease of doing business in the resource sector, and strengthen centre-state coordination for balanced regional development.
Building on the success of the first conclave held in Nagaland, this year's edition will feature a series of impactful sessions and releases.
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) under the Ministry of Mines will present the latest findings on mineral exploration and unveil key publications dedicated to the region's geology and resource profile.
Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed between central agencies and state governments to accelerate mineral exploration.
The Ministry of Mines will also highlight progress under the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET), which has been supporting several ongoing exploration projects in the region.
India's mineral auction framework has gained strong momentum in recent months.
Since 2024-25, a total of 283 mineral blocks have been put up for auction by the State and Central Governments.
Of these, 161 mineral blocks have been successfully auctioned, bringing the cumulative tally to 515.
This includes five mineral blocks from Assam and four critical mineral blocks from Arunachal Pradesh, opening new avenues for industrial growth and employment in the region.
These auctions underscore the readiness of the North-East to play a central role in India's critical mineral strategy, while also reflecting the government's commitment to transparency and competitiveness in resource allocation.
In parallel, the Ministry of Coal will launch two important publications during the conclave -- the 'Report on Coal Resources & Exploration in North Eastern Region' and a dedicated brochure on commercial coal mining in North East states.
These documents reflect the substantial progress made in recent years, including the successful auction of five coal blocks in the North East region, with a combined peak rated capacity of 1.234 million tonnes per annum.
With over 3.9 lakh meters of drilling planned and 100 per cent utilisation of R&D funds, the Ministry is actively promoting sustainable and smart coal mining practices in the region.
The conclave will also feature NLC India Ltd.'s ambitious plans to set up 1,000 MW of solar power capacity in Assam, contributing to the national target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy by 2030.
The two-day conclave signifies a strong convergence of efforts between the Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of Coal, aligning energy security with regional development and environmental sustainability. The event is expected to serve as a catalyst for future investments, innovation, and inclusive growth in the North Eastern Region. (ANI)

Indian indices open flat as FPI outflows weigh on sentiment despite govt boosters

Market experts noted that factors such as monetary and fiscal stimulus, good monsoons, benign inflation, and targeted consumption boosters should ideally have pushed Indian markets higher. The Nifty 50 index opened at 24,965.80, slipping by 14.85 points or 0.06 per cent. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex started the day at 81,669.09, registering a modest gain of 24.70 points or 0.03 per cent. New Delhi: Indian stock markets opened flat on Tuesday as continuous foreign portfolio investor (FPI) outflows kept indices in check, even as the government recently announced several consumption-boosting measures. Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert, told ANI 'What has held back the markets has been a relatively higher valuation in an underwhelming earnings recovery scenario. As earnings rise, Indian markets will rise ahead of these. That could happen by the next quarter as the festive season boost meets the government boosters. At some point, Indian markets will take off in anticipation.' On the global front, Bagga said that the easing of tensions between India and China, along with Chinese assurances on supply of rare earths, fertilisers, and tunnel boring machines, as well as expectations of large FDI inflows, should have improved investor sentiment. India is also making efforts to address the impact of punitive tariffs imposed by the US on key labour-intensive export sectors. In addition, the country is working to forge stronger economic partnerships at the geostrategic level. These measures will safeguard jobs and benefit India's trade outlook in the coming months. Another factor that markets are closely watching is the movement of FPIs. Large short positions taken by FPIs have added pressure on the indices. Once these reverse, Indian markets could see sharp short covering, potentially helping indices climb to all-time highs by the end of the year. In the broader market, the Nifty 100 was down by 0.08 per cent, while the Nifty Midcap 100 slipped 0.05 per cent. The Nifty Small Cap 100, however, gained 0.11 per cent in the opening session. Among sectoral indices on NSE, mixed trends were seen. Nifty Auto rose 0.17 per cent, while Nifty FMCG declined by 0.17 per cent. Nifty Pharma was down 0.20 per cent, Nifty Realty slipped 0.14 per cent, and Nifty Oil & Gas fell 0.15 per cent. Vikram Kasat, Head – Advisory at PL Capital, said, 'Nifty continued its bullish momentum. On the hourly chart, there was a gap zone between 24,993-25,046 levels which will be the immediate resistance. Clearing this can push the Nifty higher towards 25,250, which is a make-or-break zone from a medium-term perspective. The 24,852-24,673 range will be the support zone.' In the Asian markets, trading sentiment was largely weak on Tuesday morning. Japan's Nikkei 225 index declined by 1.87 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.77 per cent, Taiwan's weighted index slipped by more than 2 per cent, while South Korea's KOSPI fell by 1.98 per cent at the time of filing this report. 'Need to address urgently': Jaishankar flags soaring trade imbalance despite fivefold rise in India-Russia trade

At the 26th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar calls for urgent action to correct the widening trade gap and outlines a roadmap for deeper economic engagement External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar address the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) in Moscow on Wednesday. ANI External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday raised concerns over the sharp rise in India's trade imbalance with Russia, even as bilateral trade in goods has surged more than fivefold over the past four years. At the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC), EAM Dr S Jaishankar says "We are meeting here after about 10 months since the last Session in November 2024 in New Delhi,… — ANI (@ANI) August 20, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Addressing the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC), Jaishankar said, '…Over the last four years, our bilateral trade in goods has increased, as you have noted, more than five-fold from $3 billion in 2021 to $68 billion in 2024-25 and it continues to grow. However, a major trade imbalance has accompanied the growth; it has increased from $6.6 billion to $58.9 billion which is about nine times. So we need to address that urgently.' Jaishankar also outlined the key priorities for deepening bilateral economic ties, with a strong focus on easing trade barriers and boosting connectivity. Among the top agenda items were removal of tariff and non-tariff barriers, resolving logistics bottlenecks, and enhancing regional connectivity through major corridors such as the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), the Northern Sea Route, and the Chennai-Vladivostok maritime link. Jaishankar stressed the need to streamline payment mechanisms, finalise and execute the Programme of Economic Cooperation until 2030, and to accelerate negotiations for the India-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement, whose terms of reference were finalised during the session. Regular engagement between Indian and Russian businesses was also identified as critical to realising these goals. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'They will not only help to address the imbalance and grow our trade, but also hasten the timely achievement of our revised trade target of $100 billion by 2030,' said Jaishankar. Noting that the meeting was taking place against the backdrop of a complex geopolitical environment, Jaishankar emphasised that despite global challenges, the leadership of both countries remains in close and regular contact, having met twice in person last year. 'They provide us wise and practical guidance to our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. They had two 'in person' meetings last year and are personally committed to further advancing our strategic partnership,' he added. As the two sides convened to discuss economic cooperation, Jaishankar proposed several measures aimed at improving coordination and strengthening the partnership, underscoring the importance of enhanced efficiency in achieving shared goals. Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, currently on a three-day visit to Russia, met Russian scholars and think tank representatives to discuss India‑Russia relations and broader global issues. Jaishankar's visit comes against the backdrop of deteriorating ties between India and the US, following President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, which includes an additional 25% penalty for purchasing Russian crude oil. Taking to X, Jaishankar said, 'Pleased to interact with prominent scholars and think tank representatives of Russia. Discussed India-Russia relations, contemporary world geopolitics and India's viewpoint.' Later, the External Affairs Minister also paid tribute at Moscow's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Wednesday. The historic war memorial near the Kremlin is dedicated to the Soviet soldiers killed during World War II. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Jaishankar's visit comes before a possible meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the SCO Summit in Tianjin, China. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding the possibility of Putin visiting India later this year. On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin had called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and shared his insights about the recent meeting in Alaska with US President Donald Trump over the Ukraine conflict. PM Modi said India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. With inputs from agencies
