The Hindu wins environment journalism prize
The Hindu bagged the Paristhithi Mithram Journalism Prize (Print Media Journalist ) instituted by the Department of Environment and Climate Change for outstanding contributions to environmental conservation.
A collection of over 30 environmental stories authored by K.S. Sudhi, Chief of Bureau, The Hindu, Kochi, and published in The Hindu in 2024 won the award. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented the award, which carries a cash prize of ₹1 lakh and citation, at a function in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday in connection with World Environment Day.
I.B. Satheesh, MLA, Salom Gnana Thanga Vincent, Professor, Department of Environment Science, Kerala University, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kollam, and Guruvayur Municipality also won awards in different categories. K.P. Devika, a Class III student of Kozhikode, won a special mention for her conservation efforts.
S. Sambasiva Rao, Special Secretary, Environment Department, S. Sreekala, Chairperson, Kerala State Pollution Control Board, N. Anilkumar, Chairperson, Kerala State Biodiversity Board, N. Krishnakumar, Kerala Legislative Secretary, Suneel Pamidi, Director, Department of Environment, and Ananya Ghoshal of UNICEF attended the event.
The event was supported by UNICEF.
A workshop on ending plastic pollution was also held.

A day after green event, LMC red-faced
Half a dozen of the saplings planted by urban development minister AK Sharma and other officials at Laxman Mela Ground disappeared on Friday, just a day after the plantation drive, raising serious questions over the Lucknow Municipal Corporation's (LMC) planning and execution. The plantation was part of a major event on World Environment Day, Ganga Dussehra, and the birthday of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, on Thursday. Officials had planted over 30 saplings at the site. Of the 10 saplings planted in a row -- each protected by tree guards -- by minister Sharma, mayor Sushma Kharakwal and municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar, only four remained by Friday morning. A ground report by HT on Friday morning revealed six empty pits, while the saplings were missing. However, LMC claimed that the plants were 'shifted' to another location as a large number of people visit Laxman Mela Ground during festivals. Despite the presence of top officials and the appointment of additional municipal commissioner Arun Kumar Gupta as nodal officer, LMC failed to identify a suitable location for the plantation drive. Officials acknowledged that the site is actually used for idol immersion during major festivals, and the area turned into a dumping ground just hours after the Thursday event. However, soon after the issue came to light, the LMC staff started planting the saplings again in what appeared to be a damage control effort. Criticising LMC's 'casual approach', environmentalists said inability to safeguard saplings planted in the presence of a minister would dent the credibility of regular plantation drives. Prabhunath Rai, president of Bhojpuri Samaj, claimed the saplings were removed by LMC officials themselves after realising that the site was wrongly selected. 'This is pure negligence,' Rai said. Mayor Sushma Kharakwal directed additional municipal corporation Arun Kumar Gupta to prepare and submit a detailed report. Meanwhile, LMC claimed to have planted over 1,000 saplings across the city as part of the same initiative, including those of rudraksha, banyan, amla, and kaner. The campaign also featured activities under 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' and 'Plogging for Plastic' campaigns. A human chain was also formed for environment conservation at the Gomti riverfront.

Telangana: MoS Defence Sanjay Seth visits Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) in Secunderabad
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 6 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, visited Military College of Electronics & Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) on Friday. He was briefed by the Commandant, Lt Gen Neeraj Varshney, VSM, about the training activities at the institution. He interacted with the soldiers and visited the new Drone Training Lab, 'Drone Alaya', and discussed ways and means to develop indigenous anti-drone systems to prevent Kamikaze attacks. He witnessed the new projects of staff on radars in super high-altitude areas and appreciated the work of EME technicians in Operation Sindoor and MCEME's initiatives in promoting Atmanirbharta in defence technologies along with MSMEs & Startups. Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth also planted a tree on MCEME's premises. Earlier in the day, Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, visited Ordnance Factory Medak in Telangana. Seth was received by Sanjay Dwivedi, CMD/AVNL, in the presence of Satyabrata Mukherjee, Director/Operations. As per a release, Sanjay Seth inspected the production facilities and enquired about the production schedules. The Union Minister was shown all the products manufactured at OF Medak. He appreciated and expressed satisfaction at the preparedness of the factory. Along with Raghunandan Rao, Member of Parliament, Medak took a tank ride. Both the dignitaries planted saplings to mark World Environment Day. The representatives of the Unions and Associations submitted a memorandum to the MoS. Later, the Minister was given a presentation by the team of the Ordnance Factory, Medak. Sanjay Seth assured to resolve the issues pertaining to AVNL and he also exhorted CMD/AVNL to focus on diversification of the products and thrust to be given on R&D to ensure self-sustenance of Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL). The visit ended successfully on a positive note. Earlier, Sanjay Seth announced the expansion of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) by three lakh cadets across the country. Several states have already agreed to support this plan and have committed to fast-tracking the necessary training infrastructure, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Defence. 'He also announced the planned expansion of NCC by Three lakh cadets across the country with several States already extending their concurrence and committing to fast-track the necessary training infrastructure,' the MoD statement read. 'National Cadet Corps (NCC) is an organisation that instils the feeling of nationalism, service... PM Modi has resolved that the number of cadets in the NCC should be between 17-20 lakhs... All the states positively contribute to it and we will achieve the target shortly...' Seth said. (ANI)

Delhi Minister Ravinder Indraj inspects under-construction facility for persons with disabilities in Narela
New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): Ravinder Indraj, the Delhi government's Minister of Social Welfare, SC & ST Welfare, Cooperative, and Election, inspected the under-construction building for mentally challenged individuals in Narela on Friday. According to a release, Minister Indraj was accompanied by PWD and Social Welfare Department officials. Ravinder Indraj stated that the campus is being developed in accordance with the needs of persons with disabilities. Once completed, individuals currently residing in overcrowded shelter homes like Asha Homes in Rohini will be relocated here. According to the release, the building, located within the Nursing College Hostel premises and the Primary Urban Health Centre campus in Narela, will accommodate 220 differently abled residents. It is expected to be operational within three months. The Social Welfare Minister instructed that the campus must be fully disability-friendly, the construction should be of high quality, there must be no encroachment around the premises, and ambulance movement should not face any obstruction. The Delhi Minister also stated that multiple facilities are being developed across the city-state for persons with disabilities. Once the facilities in Mamurpur and Dallupura are completed, it will significantly improve access to services, safety, and healthcare for the differently-abled. On World Environment Day, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently announced that 280 electric buses will be added to the city's fleet by 2027 as part of a new electric vehicle (EV) policy. Speaking to ANI, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the Delhi government plans to add 280 electric buses by 2027. 'We have decided to give 280 electric buses to Delhi. By 2027, the whole fleet of buses the Delhi government provides will be electric. We are also bringing in a new EV policy,' she said. CM Gupta praised the new buses, calling them a tremendous asset for Delhi and highlighting their high comfort level and security features. 'These buses are a tremendous asset for Delhi. This is a highly comfortable bus. Cameras and a panic button have been installed inside the bus. The buses have a low floor and are air-conditioned,' the Delhi CM said. (ANI)
