Maintaining sustained eco growth govt's top priority: FM Nirmala Sitharaman
Nirmala Sitharaman
on Saturday said that sustaining economic growth remains the top priority for the government, along with providing the necessary support to the economy.
At a book launch event, the minister said multilateral bodies were facing challenges and India needed to not just be part of the discussions to rework the international architecture for the next century but also be the voice of the Global South.
She said the government had prioritised public investment over the last few years with Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself pushing her ministry to step up capex every year. "I believe, based on data before me, that it (investment) is one of the primary drivers of sustained economic growth.
It can be higher but the level at which we have maintained investment is largely on the back of public capital expenditure. We can make sure policy on FDI is friendly and attractive enough to get more investment into India.
Third, I can see states also competing to attract investments and each is doing very best," Sitharaman said.
The minister, however, indicated that companies may be sitting on large investible funds.

"Is Indian private sector growing in pace with the government investment? Since 2019 once the twin balance sheet problem was addressed and corporate tax was brought down, we can see that the balance sheets of the private sector are healthier. But today, are they sitting on passive investible funds. That's an issue on which I would want industry to speak," she said.
Asked about calls for easing restrictions on Chinese investments and business, Sitharaman sounded a note of caution. "Post-Covid and post-Galwan, for all (land) bordering countries, we had come up with 'Press Note 3' because we didn't want big business happening with them. In some renewable energy areas, where the entire project was done by, say China, and there were difficulties in getting technical experts to travel to India, that to some extent was relaxed.
During the US-China tariff war there was a lull," she said.

DGP: Over 16k cases examined in state forensic labs since 2022
Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday inaugurated the drone lab, DNA lab, and Atal library at the Uttar Pradesh State Institute of Forensic Science (UPSIFS), Lucknow. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He also flagged off 75 modern forensic vans equipped with advanced technology for deployment across all districts of the state. Director general of police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna highlighted the remarkable progress of forensic sciences in the state and said that since 2022, at least 16,255 cases were examined in state laboratories, of which 15,105 involved fingerprint analysis. He praised UPSIFS as a milestone institution offering international-level education and research in forensics, bringing global recognition to Uttar Pradesh. Additional secretary, ministry of electronics and IT, Government of India, Abhishek Singh stressed India's determination to achieve technological self-reliance. He said India no longer wishes to depend on foreign digital products and is actively developing its own solutions, including indigenous alternatives to Microsoft Office. He highlighted the need for voice-based services in local languages, AI models trained on Indian data, and cyber forensic labs for enhanced digital security. "When technology speaks your language, it becomes a tool of empowerment," Singh remarked, noting the contributions of startups like Sarvam, Gyani, and Socket in this direction. Founder Director of UPSIFS, GK Goswamy emphasised integrating legality into every stage of development—from product design to service delivery. Drawing an analogy with medical science, he explained that just as doctors provide preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic care, UPSIFS imparts forensic education with a holistic approach. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He highlighted the institute's merit-based admissions through national-level exams, noting that last year's cut-off for major programs stood at 92%, a testimony to the institute's growing prestige. Pointing to the future, Goswamy presented the concept of "Forensics as a Service" (FaaS), envisioning a system where digital diagnostics and forensic services are available at the click of a button. He said that UPSIFS, with its students, faculty, and experts, is fully prepared to lead this transformation in forensic science, justice, and global security.

The only difference is that in online courses students need not come to the campus. This offers a robust learning platform as all course content and assessments are delivered via a centralised Learning Management System (LMS), she said. "We have developed a four-quadrant multimedia content, which means these courses follow UGC's prescribed four-quadrant design (video tutorials, e-text materials, discussion forums and periodic assessments)," she said, adding that the courses offer a robust placement support that includes receiving assistance in navigating career prospects. This course ensures accessibility and affordability, she said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
