Helping hands needed for Nkosinathi Project

AROUND 300 meals are served to homeless people, for five days a week, through the Denis Hurley Centre's (DHC) Nkosinathi Project which is currently looking for helping hands.
Nonhlanhla Nhlangulela, a social worker and project co-ordinator, said that they are always looking for volunteers in the kitchen to help prepare as well as serve breakfast and lunch to people, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
'Volunteers are needed from 08:00 to 10:00 and then again 11:00 to 13:00 and we quite understand if people can only come for part of the morning,' said Nhlangulela. 'The work involves helping serve tea and bread at around 08:30, preparing a cooked meal, serving the food at noon and clearing up afterwards. The work is supervised by our cook, so you will always know what to do and there is security on site in case of any problems, which is rare.'
To volunteer with the programme, you need to be over 16 years old. Parking is available for R25 at the neighbouring Cathedral; alternatively one can park below Victoria Street market, which is opposite DHC, which costs R12 for a few hours.

'We are open to volunteers just turning up – though if we know that someone is coming in regularly on a certain day that helps us to plan. We also welcome small groups of volunteers (families, community groups, students, office outings), though these need to be scheduled in advance,' said Nhlangulela.
She said the cost of running the programme is about R15 per person per day or R4000 per day, which is funded by generous donations of cash and food from donors. 'But simply spending time chatting with the homeless is also a part of the ministry. We already have regular volunteers from the Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Jewish communities and are very keen to be as multi-faith as possible as part of Hurley's legacy,' said Nhlangulela.
In addition to receiving breakfast and a cooked lunch, the homeless have access to showers, a laundry service, a free clinic, counselling, empowerment talks and job-related skills. For more information or to volunteer, email Nonhlanhla Nhlangulela on [email protected] or call 064 650 5713.

Saree and Dhoti Walk unite community in culture

Sandton Andhra Sabha members and guests celebrated culture and unity through the Saree and Dhoti Walk held on Saturday at the BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir and Cultural Complex. The event brought together people of different races, cultures, and backgrounds. Women arrived dressed in sarees (six metres of decorative fabric draped in traditional style) while men wore dhotis, a cloth tied around the waist. 'We wanted to showcase women in sarees and create a movement. It does not matter your race or culture. We wanted everyone to be part of something greater,' said Reddy. Naidoo said the day was about pride in heritage and unity in the community. This year's walk also coincided with Raksha Bandhan, a Hindu celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters. The tradition involves tying a string symbolising an endless bond that grows stronger each year. Naidoo said finding the venue was a blessing. The Andhra Sabha connected with BAPS coordinator Munral Bhagwan, who helped secure the complex. Shayona also opened its doors to serve food for the participants. BAPS volunteer Diyesh Joshi said it was an honour to host the initiative. 'As Indians, it's important wherever we are in the world to retain our language, authentic food, clothing, and faith,' he said. 'Events like this help us keep our traditions alive.' The organisers hope to make the Saree and Dhoti Walk an annual Women's Day tradition, encouraging people to embrace cultural dress and learn about its significance. Reddy added, 'We are also teaching Hindus, including our youth, how to tie a saree so that our culture is passed.
