Safe Internet campaign enhances digital literacy among rural Sabah students

By: Bernama Text Size: Fahmi speaks at the event. - fotoBERNAMA PAPAR: A Safe Internet Campaign organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at SMK St Mary in Limbahau is helping to boost digital literacy and cyber safety awareness among rural students in Sabah. The initiative, under the Ministry of Communications, goes beyond improving internet access by promoting safe, ethical and responsible online behaviour, particularly among young people. Launched by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, the programme included online safety awareness sessions, interactive activities and teacher training designed to instil strong values and resilience in students facing online threats. Form Three student Faradira Horatio, appointed as the school's K-Dat Captain Icon for the campaign, said such programmes should be expanded to other rural areas to ensure all students benefit from cybersecurity education. 'It teaches us to use the internet and social media responsibly, something many students tend to overlook,' she said, adding that she plans to actively raise awareness among her peers about cyberbullying and promote safe, responsible online behaviour. Form Four student Lee Yuh Hui said the campaign provided new insights on digital footprints and the risks of irresponsible internet use. 'Many students still lack awareness about safe digital practices. This campaign helps fill that gap,' she added. Form Five student Steve Noel said the initiative helped students distinguish between credible and false information online. In a statement, MCMC said the campaign reflects a whole-of-nation approach under the Malaysia Madani framework, involving collaboration between schools, government agencies, parents and local authorities to deliver digital safety messages effectively. 'The internet is more than a communication tool, it's a platform to shape values, spread knowledge, and foster unity. Let's ensure this space remains safe, ethical, and constructive for future generations,' the statement said. Fahmi also joined students in an interactive session, advising them to remain vigilant about cyber threats. The award was for her article titled 'Program Bangsa Johor Bahagia (BJB) Diilham Agong, Raja Permaisuri Tingkat Kualiti Hidup Penghuni Rumah Pangsa' (Initiative by King, Queen of Malaysia improves flat communities' quality of life), published on mainstream media platforms, which highlighted the university's contribution to society through high-impact initiatives. For Nur Fatin, the recognition goes beyond a personal milestone; it symbolises trust in the role of freelance journalists who often work behind the scenes. 'I never expected to be recognised in such a way. Freelancers may not always be in the spotlight, but we strive to ensure the voices of the people are heard and important stories continue to be told,' she said.

563 take part in All Saints' school event

Activities included beautifying the school grounds, tree planting, landscape improvements, classroom decoration and cleaning the school premises. The energetic atmosphere was evident through the enthusiastic participation of all community layers. Liew: Funds will be secured for community centre

Kota Kinabalu: The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) will apply to the State Government for the necessary funds for the restoration of the historic Kota Kinabalu Community Hall which was destroyed by fire on July 29. Its Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew said the remaining building will not be demolished as it holds a historical and cultural significance since its completion in 1958. Advertisement She added that the Kota Kinabalu Community had, since then, hosted numerous events, including government programmes, cultural festivals, community engagements, game tournaments, musicals, beauty pageants as well as NGO and youth activities. 'We don't want to lose this valuable heritage structure altogether. Based on records kept by the Sabah Museum Department, the Kota Kinabalu Community Hall became a cultural heritage building from 1999 until 2017. 'In 2017, it was declared a State Heritage building in accordance with the State Heritage Enactment 2017,' said Liew, who is also Chairman of the State Heritage Council, after inspecting the site of the fire incident, Monday. She was accompanied by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary Datuk Josie Lai, Director of Sabah Museum Department, Abd Arif Hamid, and Deputy Director-General of Kota Kinabalu City Hall (Financial Management Sector), Victor Gerard Kuasi.
