The unsung heroes in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's rise to the summit

The Hindu2 days ago

One of the oft-used cliches is that the IPL is a marathon, not a sprint. Delhi Capitals will ruefully agree – after all, they won their first four matches in a canter yet failed to make even a serious push for the Playoffs.
It's also said regularly that while batters win matches, bowlers win tournaments. One need not look beyond Royal Challengers Bengaluru to understand exactly what that means.
On an emotional, dramatic Tuesday night in front of nearly 100,000 spectators at the gigantic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the most passionate sports fans in the world were finally rewarded for loyalty when Rajat Patidar did what Rahul Dravid, Kevin Pietersen, Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori, Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis before him had failed to accomplish. In his first season as the captain of the franchise, any franchise, the unassuming Madhya Pradesh batter took his team over the finish line, sparking waves of unchecked celebration throughout the night on the pothole-ridden streets of Bengaluru. After 17 unsuccessful attempts, RCB had finally shed the monkey off their back. There was unalloyed delight, of course, but also a huge sigh of relief. And the unmistakable air of having 'done it for Virat', in a throwback to 2011 when triumph at the 50-over World Cup in Mumbai was dedicated to the peerless Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli was the obvious cynosure, like he always is when he takes the cricket field, and there is no mistaking his imprint on the march to the Promised Land. He topped 600 runs in an IPL season for the third time on the bounce, finishing with a franchise-high 657 runs. Only Orange Cap winner Sai Sudharsan (759) and the tournament's Most Valuable Player, Suryakumar Yadav (717), boasted a higher tally. No one scored as many half-centuries (8) as the former India and RCB skipper and his strike-rate of 144.71 was a marked improvement on his overall IPL strike-rate of 132.86.
Alongside the effervescent Phil Salt, Kohli formed an exceptional opening pair. The Englishman, who had struck up an excellent alliance with Sunil Narine at the top of the tree when Kolkata Knight Riders won a third title last season, ended up with 403 runs, strike-rate 175.98. Until he pulled up lame with a hamstring injury deep into the league stage, Australian finisher Tim David had sent the RCB faithful into raptures by smashing 16 fours and 14 sixes in 101 deliveries to average 62.33 and strike at 185.14 runs per 100 balls faced, while Romario Shepherd became a household name after a 14-ball half-century (the joint second fastest in the tournament's history) against Chennai Super Kings a month back.
Patidar himself and feisty, inventive wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma were the other batting heroes at various stages while local lads Devdutt Padikkal and his injury replacement Mayank Agarwal more than held their own, which meant that for the first time in their history, IPL weren't reliant merely on their top three or four, as has been the case for much of their existence.
One of the reasons why RCB only made three finals in the first 17 years was because they didn't have sustained firepower in their bowling. There would be the occasional high-performing asset – none more so than Yuzvendra Chahal – but one couldn't shake off the feeling that RCB had been so fixated on their explosive top order which included Kohli (the only man to play for the same franchise for all 18 years) and at various stages Chris Gayle, A.B. de Villiers, Yuvraj Singh and Shane Watson that they didn't quite pay the same attention to their bowling.
That anomaly was emphatically corrected at the big November auction in Jeddah, and the results are there for all to see. RCB weren't just content to secure the services of Josh Hazlewood; they stuck with Yash Dayal, the left-arm quick, while roping in the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The two Indians played all 15 matches while Aussie Hazlewood missed three games with a shoulder injury, during which time his value to the team became even more evident. Rasik Salam and Lungi Ngidi were used sparingly – both played only two games apiece – which was because Shepherd slotted in nicely as a fourth seamer when required. The West Indian did go at 10.78 runs per over but had the happy knack of picking up big wickets, none bigger than Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer, caught behind in the final for just one after having knocked Mumbai Indians out in Sunday's Qualifier 2 with a special unbeaten 87.
The pundits were unanimous in their view that RCB had had an excellent auction, that they had most bases covered. If it was only 'most' and not 'all' bases, that was because the spin department looked a little undercooked. Their main specialist spinners were Krunal Pandya, the fastish left-armer, and Suyash Sharma, the little leggie who tends to look at the sky when he releases the ball. Competent, sure, was the verdict, but game-changing? Decisively impactful? Hmmm, the jury went.
How wrong we were all to be proved. The older Pandya brother will never fall in the 'classical' category – not that he will ever lay claim to it – but he is street-smart, clever, a half-step ahead of the game, making the most of whatever he has without attempting to overreach. Throughout the campaign, his changes of pace and angles were exemplary; he even bowled the bouncer, often clocked in the mid-110s, with reasonable regularity. He rushed through his overs, he was seldom collared – his economy of 8.23 was the best among all RCB bowlers who played at least two matches – but most importantly, he kept adding to the wickets column.
On Tuesday, Krunal packed off Prabhsimran Singh and dangerous Aussie Josh Inglis, two wicketkeeper-batters eminently capable of changing the course of a game in a matter of a few overs. Like he had done in the previous 14 games, he was relentless, probing, testing – not with loop and drift and dip and turn, but with common sense which in reality isn't all that common. By the time he was done with his spell, he had picked up two for 17, enough to secure him the Player of the Final award for an unprecedented second time in the IPL. Krunal's 17 wickets were the joint second highest for RCB, alongside Bhuvneshwar; unsurprisingly, Hazlewood topped the charts with 22 sticks.
Suyash wasn't in the same wicket-taking league as his 'spin' twin, but he too had a season to remember – eight wickets, economy 8.84. At KKR, he had often slipped in as an Impact Player; here, he often played entire matches, the surest indication of how highly he is rated by the team management even in the nascent stages of his career. In his 14 appearances, Suyash bowled 50 overs, the second most by an RCB bowler (behind Bhuvneshwar's 52), reiterating the confidence Patidar and Jitesh, who stood in as captain when Patidar was nursing a finger injury, had in the 22-year-old.
While the spinners unexpectedly whipped up a storm, Bhuvneshwar and Dayal ensured that Hazlewood wasn't left to do all the heavy lifting on his own. Bhuvneshwar is a seasoned campaigner who won the title with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 and is closing in on 200 IPL wickets. He provided the cutting edge with the new ball, making up for a slight drop in pace by bringing his experience into play and dipping into his vast reservoir of tricks. He was also a mentor to Dayal, useful tips from mid-on or mid-off ensuring that the left-arm quick didn't get carried away.
Dayal has been one of the stars for RCB in the last couple of seasons. He was a shining light in Gujarat Titans' surge to the title on their debut in 2022, but like Chetan Sharma and his last-ball six (conceded to Javed Miandad in Sharjah), he was remembered more for having gone for five sixes in the last over the following year when Rinku Singh muscled KKR to one of the more famous T20 victories. The way the 27-year-old from Allahabad has bounced back is the stuff of legend. Now, Dayal doesn't invoke memories of Rinku anymore. He has established his own identity as a wicket-taker with the new ball, because he is able to swing the white ball when it is new, and as a terrific end-overs specialist who has become adept at defending targets in the last over (poetic justice, you say?).
Last year, Dayal put Chennai Super Kings out at the league stage in a virtual quarterfinal. The five-time former champions needed 17 off the last over to dump RCB and advance even in the event of a defeat, and when Mahendra Singh Dhoni smashed Dayal over long-on and out of the park, images of Rinku might have briefly surfaced. Dayal pulled himself together brilliantly, dismissed Dhoni off the next ball, and conceded only one more run in the over to win over the RCB fans. This year, with the stakes a lot lesser, he again expertly defended 15 in the last over and six off the last three deliveries against the same opponents at the same venue (the Chinnaswamy), one of many instances when he was the last-over boss.
His 13 wickets were crucial to RCB's fortunes. Alongside Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar, he ensured that RCB's three principal pacers accounted for a staggering 52 wickets in the competition. The batters will understandably hog the limelight because that is the nature of the cricket beast, especially in the 20-over format, but within the dugout, Patidar, head coach Andy Flower and Kohli, the team's heartbeat, will have profusely and gratefully acknowledged the class, tenacity, persistence and bloody-mindedness of a largely settled bowling unit. And this truly was the definition of a unit propelled by its Indian core, not just Hazlewood and the rest. How heartening.

FIFA World Cup 2026 status check: As Uzbekistan, Jordan create history, a look at all teams that have qualified so far

Three more teams confirmed their spots at the expanded 2026 Fifa World Cup as Uzbekistan, Jordan and South Korea booked their ticks on Thursday. Uzbekistan and Jordan qualified for the men's Fifa World Cup for the first time in history, while South Korea sealed their 11th straight appearance. The 2026 World Cup will have a record 48 teams in the tournament to be co-hosted the United States, Mexico and Canada. History for Uzbekistan & Jordan A 0-0 draw against the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi was enough for Uzbekistan to take the second automatic qualification spot in Group A behind Iran with a game to spare. The Central Asian team and fans celebrated together at the end and had goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov to thank for a number of important saves. As well as the six automatic qualifiers from Asia, the UAE and Qatar, who defeated the already-qualified Iran 1-0, will finish third and fourth and advance to the next stage, where six teams will compete for two more places at the 2026 World Cup. In Group B, South Korea won 2-0 in Iraq to clinch its place. The Taeguk Warriors were helped by Ali Al-Hamadi's first-half red card, given to the Ipswich Town striker for a high kick. Kim Jin-gyu put Korea ahead just after the hour, and the victory was sealed by Oh Hyeon-gyu eight minutes from the end. It was also enough for Jordan, who earlier beat Oman 3-0 to clinch a place in the top two. All three goals were scored by Ali Olwan. Group C saw China eliminated after a 1-0 loss to Indonesia in Jakarta. Elsewhere in the group, a last-minute goal from Aziz Behich gave Australia a 1-0 win over Japan, already qualified, in Perth to put the Socceroos within touching distance of a sixth straight World Cup appearance. How does qualification work for 2028? Forty-three teams will get their spots through the various continental qualifying pathways. Out of these, Asia will have eight direct berths and one in the intercontinental playoff. Africa has nine direct spots plus one for the intercontinental playoff. North and Central America, plus the Caribbean get three direct berths (plus the three host nations) and another two spots in the intercontinental playoffs. South America has six direct spots and will send another team to the intercontinental playoffs. Oceania for the first time has a guaranteed spot — New Zealand clinched that in March. It could add another with New Caledonia going into the intercontinental playoffs. Europe will have 16 spots, typically the continent with the most representation. Another two will secure their berths in the international playoffs featuring six teams and scheduled for March 2026. Which teams have qualified so far? Host nations (automatic qualification): United States, Mexico, Canada From Asia: Japan (qualified on March 20), Iran (qualified on March 25), Jordan (qualified on June 5), South Korea (qualified on June 5), Uzbekistan (qualified on June 5) From Oceania: New Zealand (qualified on March 24) From South America: Argentina (qualified on March 25). Bengaluru stampede: 4 held after suo motu FIR, senior police officers suspended as blame game continues

On Thursday, the police had filed a suo motu FIR accusing the RCB franchise, DNA Entertainment and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) administrative committee for going ahead with the celebrations, despite not being given the requisite permissions. Among the four held is Royal Challengers Bengaluru marketing head Nikhil Sosale. The others arrested are Kiran Kumar, Senior Event Manager at DNA Entertainment Networks; Sunil Mathew, Vice-President of business affairs; and another employee, Sumanth. Bengaluru: Two days after 11 people were killed and several injured in a stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru Police have arrested four persons, including a top RCB official and three from the event management firm that organised the team's IPL victory celebrations. Hours later, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the suspension of Bengaluru city police chief B. Dayananda and at least four other senior officers, holding them responsible for the tragedy. The officers were suspended for facilitating a situation that 'went out of control and brought a lot of misery, loss of precious life and embarrassment to the government', among other reasons. The victims of Wednesday's stampede were all aged under 33, with the youngest being 13 years old. 'The CEO of RCB had intimated Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City on 03/06/2025 about holding the victory parade and celebrations on 4th of June 2025. However, the office of Police Commissioner failed to give written reply to the organisers, rejecting the permission on the grounds of lack of time to prepare for such a huge event,' read the suspension order released to media persons late Thursday evening. The suspended officers include commissioner Dayananda, Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Vikash Kumar Vikash, Shekar H. Tekkannavar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), and Additional Commissioner (Cubbon Park) Cubbon Park inspector A.K. Girish, who had filed the suo motu FIR, was also suspended by the chief minister. Seemanth Kumar Singh was named the new city police commissioner soon after, as decided in a cabinet meeting. Siddaramaiah was flanked by Home Minister G. Parameshwara, and Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru in-charge D.K. Shivakumar, as the announcement was made. The blame was laid on the police, organisers and the venue operators, with the government taking no responsibility. Also Read: 'My brother was crazy about cricket, it took his life': Chinnaswamy stampede leaves families devastated What the FIR said According to the complaint filed by Girish, KSCA chief executive officer Shubendu Ghosh had approached the Cubbon Park Police Station Tuesday evening around 6 pm, seeking permission for a victory parade and other celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The team won its maiden IPL trophy later that night and fans poured out on the streets in several localities in celebration, which lasted till the early hours of Wednesday. The police were skeptical as they expected hundreds of thousands of people to descend around the stadium, the FIR said. The police were aware of the challenges in providing security and managing crowds since it was not a scheduled match, and denied permission on the same grounds, including that it would disrupt traffic in the central business district on a weekday, it added. But RCB, DNA Entertainment and KSCA insisted on holding the celebrations on 4 June, the FIR further said, and despite being denied permission, the organisers posted on RCB's X handle at around 7 am about the entire day's events, including the celebrations. This information was then shared widely on social media and also by news outlets. A meeting of senior officers was then held to discuss provision of security and other arrangements to manage the crowd. The police had also brought in additional force, according to the FIR. RCB's post had said that the team would land at 1.30 pm Wednesday at HAL Airport, and then make their way to Hotel Taj West End to rest up. At 4 pm, they were supposed to be felicitated by the chief minister, deputy chief minister and others on the steps of the Vidhana Soudha, which was to be followed by a victory parade in an open-top bus from the Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy stadium, a distance of about 1 km. But the police denied permission for a parade, and the organisers then announced that the celebrations would be held at Chinnaswamy Stadium. The complaint further said that adequate arrangements had been made, but lakhs of fans turned up near the stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000. 'KSCA management committee and RCB franchise officials failed to decide on how to grant fans entry into the stadium. Consequently, thousands of fans gathered on the roads outside the stadium. Around 3.10 pm, the gates at the locations with the largest crowds were opened to let people inside. This led to a severe stampede at the gates, resulting in stampede and commotion,' it read. It added that the police, private and VVIP security personnel then tried to control the crowd and rescue those trapped in the stampede, managing to avert a larger tragedy. RCB, DNA and KSCA have been booked under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 118 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt by using dangerous weapons or means), 121 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 190 (liability of members of an unlawful assembly for offences committed in pursuit of a common object), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging their duty), and 125 (12) (acts endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. 'Want justice, not scapegoats' The Siddaramaiah government Thursday formed a one-man judicial commission to probe the stampede. Former Karnataka High Court judge Michael D' Cunha will look into the alleged lapses to figure out who was responsible for the mishap. The report will be submitted within a month. The government has so far deflected all questions on the role of political leadership in the tragedy. Police officers that ThePrint spoke to said that it was on the insistence of political leaders that the celebrations took place. Meanwhile, opposition parties have questioned Siddaramaiah over 'making scapegoats' out of the suspended police officers. 'CM @siddaramaiah avare, People of Karnataka are demanding justice, not scapegoats,' R. Ashoka, leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka assembly, wrote in a post. 'How unfair is it to first ignore the well-reasoned advice of the police department, and now unjustly pinning the blame squarely on them? CM Siddaramaiah, DCM DK Shivakumar, and Home Minister @DrParameshwara bear complete responsibility for this tragic episode. They must own up their failure and resign from their positions in the larger interest of the state and its people,' Vijayenendra added. Is there a fallout between Virat Kohli's sister and Anushka Sharma? Bhawna Kohli breaks her silence

A pall of gloom hung over cricketer Virat Kohli and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team following the tragic stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, June 4, which left 11 dead and 30 injured, raising serious concerns about RCB's crowd management and fan safety. Amid the chaos and heightened emotions, Bhawna Kohli Dhingra, Virat Kohli's sister, clapped back at a troll questioning her relationship with the cricketer and Anushka Sharma. Serving a sassy response, Bhawna Kohli called out the negativity, saying she doesn't need validation from anyone. Virat Kohli's sister shuts down a troll with a sassy comeback It all started when Bhawana took to her Instagram to celebrate the moment when Virat's RCB triumphed after 18 years; she penned a sweet note for her younger brother, Virat. Along with the note, she also shared a couple of pictures from the match, including the ones where he posed with Anushka Sharma. The post quickly garnered an overwhelming response, including likes and comments, except for one comment that questioned her relationship with her brother and sister-in-law. In the particular insinuating comment that triggered a wave of speculation, the social media user claimed that the couple never liked her social media posts, and Kohli never mentioned her in any of his speeches. Noticing the comment that triggered a wave of speculation, Bhawna didn't let it slide and called it out openly, saying, "May god give you the patience to understand love can exist in many ways, which is not necessarily shown to the world, but it's still there, like the love for almighty. Hope you have enough love in your life, no insecurities, only true bonds which don't need any validation. God bless you." Did Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma leave for London already? Meanwhile, amid the grief caused by the tragic stampede incident outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium that sent shockwaves across the country, another controversy has erupted over the rumoured departure of the 36-year-old cricketer and his wife, Anushka Sharma, to London. On the morning of June 5, an ANI video surfaced on social media showing Virat and Anushka at Mumbai Airport, dressed in coordinated black and white outfits. The video was shot at the arrival section of the airport, indicating that the couple had just landed. As soon as the video dropped on X (formerly called Twitter), it quickly went viral with claims that the couple had left for London. But what's the fact? This is insane PR going against Virat Kohli right now. He arrived in Mumbai from Bengaluru but many accounts are posting that he has left for London. Report these accounts According to ANI, the couple returned to Mumbai following RCB's exhilarating IPL 2025 victory on Thursday, when they were spotted at the Mumbai airport. A look at Virat Kohli's family tree Kohli was born on 5 November 1988 into a Punjabi family in Delhi. His mother, Saroj Kohli, is a housewife, while his father, Prem Nath Kohli, worked as a criminal lawyer. The cricketer has two siblings, an elder brother, Vikas, and an elder sister, Bhawna Kohli Dhingra. In 2017, Kohli married Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma in a small ceremony at Lake Como. They have two children, Vamika and Akaay.
