Surge in tourist arrivals to Al-Sulaymaniyah during Eid holiday

Shafaq News01-04-2025

Shafaq News/ Tourist arrivals in Al-Sulaymaniyah have surged during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, with numbers expected to rise further in the coming days.
According to the province's Directorate of Tourism, most visitors are entering through the Arbat and Tasiloja border crossings and Al-Sulaymaniyah International Airport. The majority are from other Iraqi provinces, followed by tourists from Iran.
Tourist activity began on March 27, with data to be collected through April 5. The directorate expects numbers to grow further during the official public holiday announced by the federal government.
The increase was especially noticeable on the third day of Eid in the Kurdistan Region, which coincided with the second day of the holiday in central and southern Iraq. Many families travel after spending the first day of Eid locally.
Tour operators are facilitating access to the city, as approximately 70% of hotels operate at full capacity. However, the directorate reported no issues with accommodation or services.
Tourism support teams have been deployed at key sites to assist visitors, while monitoring teams are overseeing the quality of service delivery.
Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, is one of the most significant religious holidays in the Muslim calendar. Following a month of fasting, the holiday is celebrated with family visits, public gatherings, and increased travel, contributing to the rise in tourism activity acrossthecountry.

Iraq's World Cup dreams: High stakes against South Korea

Shafaq News/ Iraq will host South Korea on Thursday night in a pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifier, with Basra International Stadium fully operational but fan turnout trailing expectations due to ticketing issues and Eid travel. The match, scheduled for 9:15 p.m. local time (6:15 a.m. GMT), is part of the ninth round in Asia's third qualifying stage and marks Basra's most significant sporting event since the 2023 Gulf Cup. Director of Basra Sports City Lutfi al-Jazaeri confirmed that upgrades to lighting, sound, and access systems had been completed. Additional parking for 8,000 vehicles was arranged near the venue. 'All components, from entrances to transport coordination, were finalized to ensure seamless movement,' al-Jazaeri stated, adding that the South Korean visitors expressed strong approval of the infrastructure and event planning. 'They viewed the complex as a modern facility and a reflection of Iraq's growing sports capabilities,' he said. Despite the preparations, only 40,000 tickets had been sold by Thursday afternoon. Organizers attributed the drop to a now-revoked policy bundling tickets with team shirts priced at 10,000 dinars ($7.5). 'The additional cost discouraged buyers. Even after removing the requirement, sales remained below expectations,' said Ghalib al-Zamili, a member of the organizing committee, also citing the Eid holiday, as many families are engaged in travel or celebrations.

Test flight lands at Mosul Airport ahead of June 10 reopening

Shafaq News/ A test flight by Iraqi Airways successfully landed at Mosul International Airport on Thursday, ahead of the airport's official reopening scheduled for June 10. Nineveh Governor Abdulqadir al-Dakhil told Shafaq News, after arriving aboard the aircraft, that the test flight, which departed from Baghdad and landed in under 30 minutes, is part of broader efforts to restore the city's connectivity with the rest of Iraq and international destinations following years of disruption. 'The airport has been prepared in line with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and is now equipped with a modern runway, a fully developed passenger terminal, and an advanced control tower.' The airport's reopening is expected to take place in the presence of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who is slated to arrive on one of the first official flights to Mosul as part of the inauguration ceremony. Governor al-Dakhil emphasized that the test landing signals the completion of key reconstruction works and transitions the project into a new phase: the operational management of the airport, noting that negotiations with several international airport management firms will begin after the Eid al-Adha holiday (June 6-9) to identify a qualified operator in line with global aviation practices. 'We will evaluate offers from international firms and hold technical negotiations to ensure that the selected operator meets efficiency standards and enhances Mosul's strategic and economic role,' al-Dakhil added. The airport project, initially launched in 2023, comes after extensive damage inflicted during ISIS's control of the city between 2014 and 2017. Reconstruction has been financed through the Nineveh provincial budget, in coordination with the Iraqi Ministries of Transport and Interior, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Border Crossings Authority.
