Southern California grandfather killed in violent carjacking
Family members are devastated after a grandfather was killed in a violent carjacking in Riverside County.
'He lived a good life, modest,' Nicole Lauritsen said of her father, James Norman, 79. 'He had a big heart.'
On May 12, Norman was parked at an Arco gas station on Hidden Valley Parkway in Norco at around 12:22 p.m., located about five minutes away from his home.
He was vacuuming his Chevy Trailblazer SUV and left the doors open. As he was cleaning, a male suspect, Ryan Hewitt, 29, of Corona, suddenly jumped into the driver's seat and started the car.
As the suspect began backing the car up, Norman, who was still partially in the back seat, became trapped.
'He didn't have his hearing aids in, so I'm guessing he didn't hear with the vacuum on and all of a sudden, his car is backing up and he was too old and frail to get out before the door slammed on him,' Lauritsen said.
Norman was dangling from the car and was dragged about a half-mile up the road before he was ejected from the moving vehicle, the Riverside County Sheriff's Office said.
He suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Riverside Community Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
'He knew my dad was hanging, but he panicked and just kept going until he fell out of the car,' Lauritsen said. 'That's what [the suspect] told investigators. Apparently, he has a drug problem and he was just trying to get to Riverside to get more drugs.'
Norman's SUV was later found abandoned near Polk Street and Magnolia Avenue in Riverside. They found Hewitt a few blocks away, where he was arrested for carjacking and murder. Investigators were able to find the car because Lauritsen had placed an Apple AirTag inside.
She said several good Samaritans helped shield Norman from oncoming traffic as he was left lying on the road.
'I'm struggling with the vision I have of how he went down,' Lauritsen said. 'I imagine he was so scared.'
Heartbroken, she said her father was an army veteran and had spent his career working in truck transport and construction. She's grateful the suspect was caught and wants to see justice for her father's death.
'I'm angry, I'm hurt,' she said. 'I'm so thankful that they caught him as quickly as they could. It doesn't give you closure, but there's somebody to be held accountable for.'
Norman is survived by his wife, two daughters and a grandson.
'He will be remembered for his resilience, his love of life, and his deep commitment to his family,' his family wrote on a GoFundMe page.
An arraignment hearing for Hewitt is scheduled for May 14. He remains in custody on $1 million bail. The deadly incident is under investigation by the Riverside County Sheriff's Office. No additional suspects are believed to be involved.

Former Terre Haute resident killed in violent attack in Tennessee
A former Terre Haute resident lost her life in Columbia, Tenn. May 31 after a violent attack in her neighborhood that left two people dead and another injured. Stacie Lynn Malone Wright, 51, who graduated from Terre Haute North Vigo High School and Indiana State University, was one of two people killed in the attack; the other individual who died, John Bidle, was a neighbor. The suspected gunman, Byron Childers, 41, lived just a few houses down from the victims, according to NewsChannel5 in Nashville. Childers faces multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder, the station reported. Others individuals were assaulted in the attack. According to quoting affidavits, Childers walked up and shot 46-year-old Bidle, who was standing in front of a house in the neighborhood. Witnesses reported that Childers then stood over Bidle in the street and shot him several more times while shouting, 'It was safe now,' because he got the 'demon from hell.' While this was happening, Wright opened the door of her home to see what the noise was, and Childers turned the gun on her, according to the affidavit. She was hit multiple times. Bidle lived across the street from her, the station reported. Childers later began firing at an ice cream truck on the street. A man in the ice cream truck was struck by a bullet in the hip, and his truck was hit several times by the gunfire, WSMV reported. Wright was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later died. In Tennessee, she had been a talent acquisition specialist at Ultium Cells. She was born to the late Silver Ruth Barksdale Malone and Pastor Cleytus D. Malone, according to an obituary. Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Sean Wright, and children, Sydni and Sean Michael of Columbia, Tennessee, as well as her father, Cleytus Malone of Terre Haute and brother, Dwayne Malone of Terre Haute. Ceremonies to celebrate Wright's life are June 14 at Saints Home Church of God in Christ in Terre Haute; visitation is from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and the funeral is at 1 p.m In lieu of flowers, people are asked to donate to Stacie's GoFundMe at The Boys and Girls Club of South Central Tennessee issued the following statement on social media after her death: "We are heartbroken. "This weekend, we lost a beloved member of our Boys & Girls Club family. Stacie Wright—a longtime volunteer, mentor, and friend—tragically lost her life in Columbia. "Stacie was a bright light in our community. She gave her time freely and her heart fully, always showing up with warmth, joy, and an unwavering commitment to the mission. Whether she was helping behind the scenes at fundraising events or guiding kids as they built birdhouses in Spring Hill, Stacie's presence made everything better. She truly embodied the spirit of service, and her impact on our youth was immeasurable. "We are devastated by this loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and colleagues at Ultium Cells during this incredibly difficult time. Stacie touched so many lives, and her kindness will never be forgotten. "She will be missed more than words can say."

‘Disturbing': Clover community wants answers, justice after hit-and-run that killed father
A town in South Carolina is mourning the tragic loss of a father killed by a driver who didn't stop to help. It happened over the weekend near a Shell gas station along Highway 55 in Clover. Channel 9's Tina Terry asked police about the investigation, but they still haven't found the driver. Now, they're asking for the community's help. Police say the victim, Anthony Parker, was walking with his bike on the shoulder of Highway 55 when the car hit him and kept going. 'That is disturbing. You know for somebody to hit somebody and keep going. Don't see how they can live with themselves,' Ron Penley, a neighbor, said. Neighbors in Clover were disappointed that a driver hit 31-year-old Anthony Raheem Parker Sunday morning and just kept going. 'I think it's terrible, I do,' said another neighbor, Marybeth Adams. The South Carolina State Highway Patrol said Parker was likely hit from behind. Troopers don't know the make or the model of the car involved, but they say it may have damage to the front or the passenger side of the vehicle. 'You would think if somebody saw something like that, they'd report it,' Penley said. A GoFundMe page set up for Parker says he left behind a 3-year-old daughter. His loss is devastating family members, and people in the community are hoping they'll get answers soon. 'I hope they get justice, I really do. They need justice, they need something,' Adams said. Sex sting operation nabs 14, including man who hit deputy with his car, breaking his leg
An online sex sting dubbed Operation Travel to Gavel, where police posed as children, netted 14 arrests, including an Ocala man who drove his car into a Volusia County sheriff's deputy and broke his leg, authorities said. The sting was carried out on June 5, 6, and 7. The 14 defendants thought they were messaging with 13, 14, and 15-year-old boys and girls when they were actually communicating with undercover detectives. A North Carolina man visiting Florida with his girlfriend and three children also ended up in handcuffs in the undercover sex sting, a Facebook post from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said. The multi-agency operation involved law enforcement officers from the North Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Port Orange, South Daytona and Lake City along with the Marion County Sheriff's Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Seventh Circuit State Attorney's Office. Among those arrested was Moshe Josue Delgado Juarez, 25, of Ocala, who accelerated his car into a deputy, fracturing his leg. In addition to being charged with traveling to meet a minor for sex, Delgado Juarez was also charged with aggravated battery and assault on law enforcement officers, aggravated fleeing with injury, and resisting arrest with violence. Delgado Juarez was being held Tuesday, June 10, without bail at the Volusia County Branch Jail. Joshua Lee Walker, 45, Lexington, North Carolina, who apparently wanted to do more than spend time with his girlfriend and three children in Florida, also ended up in handcuffs when he showed up to meet who he thought was a child, police said Walker was charged with using a computer to seduce/solicit/lure a child, traveling to meet, and the unlawful use of a communication device to facilitate the commission of a felony. Court records show he is being held on $22,500 bail. The other 12 arrested were Julio Cesar Real Chavarria, 33, South Daytona, Mathieu Merveil Kouatonou, 29, Orlando, Niegel George Johnson, 28, Daytona Beach, Sourab Chilakamarri, 26, Daytona Beach, Reinaldo Ray Medina Jr., 31, South Daytona, Carlos George Guebara, 51, DeLand, Kenneth Leon Baldwin Jr., 39, Daytona Beach, Thomas Edward McKee, 39, Port Orange, Patrick James Concree, 40, Kissimmee, Francisco Javier Jurado, 33, Orange City, Robert Scott Shipley Jr., 26, Vero Beach, and Joseph Alan Williamson, 55, Port Orange. The suspects were charged with traveling to meet a minor for sex, using a computer to seduce/solicit/lure a child, and unlawful use of a two-way communication device, the Sheriff's Office said.
