SWFL: Ladder-leaders Busselton lead the way in extended Country Championships senior squad

South West Football League ladder-leaders Busselton have led the way in an extended senior squad for next month's Country Championships, having nine players selected on a 57-strong longlist
Liam Creighton, the SWFL's leading goal kicker so far this season and the player of the final in last year's tournament, is joined by fellow Magpies Ryan Ekert, Mitchell Cameron, Jalen Hoffman, Ky Meers — all of whom were recruited over the off-season — Jozef Parkinson, Jon Meadmore, Aidan Austen and Ben Ganzer.
Each of the league's 11 clubs have at least two players selected in the squad and nine have four or more.
Bunbury, who trail the Magpies only on percentage with an 8-1 win-loss record, and fifth-placed Donnybrook have both had seven players picked, with Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault and Carey Park providing six apiece.
With the South West looking to defend a title they won back at last year's championships, the squad includes only nine players who featured in the 11-point win over Avon in the final.
But it has been bolstered by a number of players who have joined the competition this year, including Durak Tucker (Bunbury), Jesse Crichton (Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault), Haydn Busher (Bunbury), Luke English (Collie) and Jason Carter (Eaton).
Somewhat surprisingly, reigning premiers South Bunbury have only four players in the squad, with recruit Jye Clark joined by Tom Gorter, Blaine Johnson and Kade Szyszka.
Undefeated colts ladder-leaders HBL have far and away the biggest presence in the 62-player colts squad with 14 representatives, ahead of Carey Park (eight), Busselton (seven), South Bunbury and Dunsborough (both six).
Both sides will be led by the same coaches as in 2024, with Seth White — who won the Dick Smith Trophy as the coach of the carnival in his first year in charge in 2024 — set to lead the seniors and the long-serving Brett Maguire in charge of the colts.
The senior championships will take place in Perth from July 11-13, with the colts to be played on July 10 and 11.

Bunbury and Districts Hockey Association to defend pair of division one titles at Country Championships

The women's championships will be staged from Friday to Sunday before the men's tournament takes place over the same days next week. Bunbury's men's side will be hunting their fourth consecutive title, having won a thrilling final over Upper Great Southern via one-on-ones at last year's championships. After going out of 2023's championships in the semifinals, Bunbury's women's side put together a dominant tournament which they capped off with a 1-0 win over Upper Great Southern in the final to reclaim the title last year. The tournament will feature a number of other associations from the region, with Busselton to send men's and women's masters outfits while Warren (women's division four), Donnybrook (women's division five) and Margaret River (men's division three) will send one team apiece. The latest leg of the Pro League will see the Kookaburras play eight games around Europe, the first of which will come against India in Antwerp on Saturday at 4.30pm WA time. Fitting tribute for North Melbourne superfan Scott Hough as children run out with favourite Roos in Bunbury

A heart-warming and fitting tribute paid homage to one of Bunbury's most loved North Melbourne superfans at the weekend with Scott Hough's two children running out with his beloved Roos at Hands Oval. Sunday presented a special moment for two local youngsters who got the chance to run out with the North Melbourne players ahead of the history-making Bunbury clash, with their late father a Roos superfan who never got the chance to see his beloved team in the South West city. Mila and Liam Hough stepped onto the oval in a tribute to Scott, who died in 2023 after a three-year battle with motor neurone disease. It came as the rest of the AFL community celebrated their annual Big Freeze for MND round, with celebrities taking cold plunges around the country as punters donned blue beanies for the Neale Daniher-led cause. Hough, a 2001 league premiership player with Bunbury, lost his lengthy battle with motor neurone disease in 2023 and was well-known as a North Melbourne fan. So, when the top-level club was looking for youngsters to be mascots for the players as they ran through the banner on Sunday, Bunbury Football Club's Tom Busher and Jenelle O'Reilly knew just the kids. Mila told the Bunbury Herald it was 'really exciting' to run through the banner with the players. 'I thought I was going to be famous,' she said. 'It was really good.' Her favourite part of the day was North Melbourne winning — fitting for a young player whose favourite part of AusKick is getting to kick goals. Adele Hough, Scott's wife, said it was heart-warming to see their children take part in such a fitting tribute to their dad. 'It was really heart-warming, they loved it,' she said. 'It was all heart-warming to watch them in front of the crowd.' Ms O'Reilly said it was special to see the pair run out in honour of the club life-member, much-loved friend and well-missed premiership player. Scott's love of football has been passed on to the young pair, with Mila playing AusKick for the Bulldogs and both kids excited to don their North Melbourne gear and watch the game.
