Skipper nabbed, RM367,050 worth of diesel confiscated off Sandakan
The operation was uncovered when officers intercepted the vessel in the waters off Pulau Berhala at about 3.15am yesterday.
A total of 7,000 litres of diesel were seized, and a 54-year-old boat skipper, believed to be the mastermind, was arrested at the scene.
Sabah Region 4 Marine Police Commander Assistant Commissioner Nazri Ibrahim said a patrol team had earlier spotted a trawler heading towards the waters off Taganak.
"Checks on the boat led to the discovery of eight fibre tanks filled with diesel believed to be subsidised.
"The total estimated value of the seizure is RM367,050," he said in a statement.
The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Control of Supplies Act 1961.

Cigarette smuggler's 200km high-speed run from Lahad Datu to Tawau ends in dramatic crash
TAWAU, Aug 9 — A cigarette smuggler's attempt to escape arrest by speeding 200km from Lahad Datu to here ended when he crashed into a tree in Kg Titingan early Friday. Sabah Region 4 Marine Police (PPM) Commander, ACP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim, said the suspect's arrest, along with the seizure of 678,400 sticks of cigarettes of various brands and a white van – all worth more than RM1 million – took place at around 2.20 am. 'The suspect, a 43-year-old foreigner male, and the seized goods have been brought to the Tawau Operations Base for further investigation,' he said in a statement. Nazri said the initial attempt to arrest the suspect occurred in the Silam area, when the van was seen acting suspiciously. However, the suspect made a desperate move by speeding towards Kunak before entering Tawau. The suspect's refusal to stop despite being ordered led the Marine Enforcement Unit (Ungerin) and the Marine Intelligence Unit (URM) to seek assistance from the police teams at the Kunak and Tawau District Police Headquarters. 'The chase and arrest were successful after the van lost control and crashed into a tree near a residential area in Kg Titingan, which is located on the outskirts,' he added. Nazri said the suspect acted aggressively and again tried to flee, but was apprehended at the scene. An inspection found van loaded with black plastic packages containing smuggled cigarettes from various brands. An investigation was launched under the Customs Act 1967 concerning the act of protecting, storing, and concealing goods without customs duty or legal authorization. 'PPM Region 4 remains committed to combating smuggling activities and welcomes information from the public to ensure the safety and well-being of the country,' he said. Over 1,200 litres of smuggled diesel seized in Perak
IPOH: The Perak Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has seized 1,220 litres of liquid, suspected to be diesel fuel and equipment worth RM132,446.80 in a raid at Kampung Kepayang here. Perak Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry director Datuk Kamalludin Ismail said that the raid, under Ops Tiris 2025, was carried out in a workshop at 6.10pm on Aug 8 (Friday) following a week-long intelligence operation and monitoring by enforcement officers. 'The syndicate's modus operandi was to obtain diesel at a low price of about RM1.80 per litre from dishonest lorry drivers who had stolen the fuel from their employers. "The diesel was then sold to industrial buyers on the black market for about RM2.40 per litre,' he said in a statement Saturday (Aug 9). During the inspection, officers discovered 1,220 litres of suspected diesel stored in IBC tanks mounted on two lorries. Kamalludin added that a 21-year-old man, who admitted to being a lorry driver, failed to present any related documents, such as a licence, permit letter, or controlled goods storage permit, when requested by the enforcement officers. "Following this, enforcement personnel seized the suspected diesel, two lorries and the IBC tanks with pumps, valued at RM132,446.80. "The case will be investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 for allegedly possessing or storing scheduled controlled goods (diesel) without written permission from the Controller of Supplies," he added. He added that the ministry would not compromise with any party involved in the misappropriation of controlled goods and would ensure stern action, including prosecution in court. "The public is urged to be the 'eyes and ears' of the authorities by providing information on such activities," he added.
