Science Gallery Bengaluru hosts one-year long exhibition to explore food culture
In a bid to address this concern, Science Gallery Bengaluru (SGB) in Ganganagar (off Kempegowda International Airport Road) launched a year-long exhibition Saturday titled "Calorie: The Breakdown," exploring complexities of food consumption, its journey to plates, and its impact on individuals and society.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.
Jahnavi Phalkey, founding director of Science Gallery, stated the exhibition is of great relevance, considering Bengaluru's increasing outdoor food culture. "Bengaluru has a distinct outdoor food culture with diverse restaurants. But what does it mean to be eating out all the time? Our exhibition includes an exhibit on food delivery, examining its implications for both deliverers and consumers," she said.

One of the exhibits features an innovative display that addresses the habit of eating while watching screens. A sensor camera projects grains onto a TV screen when a viewer's head is bowed towards their food, encouraging visitors to focus on their meals rather than digital content.
Another notable exhibit uses artificial intelligence to create a 'food council', where each ingredient, including meats and vegetables, is given personified traits.
This virtual council discusses issues such as biodiversity loss, agriculture, food waste, and ultra-processed food, aiming to raise awareness about the advantages and disadvantages of various food choices.
Phalkey clarified the exhibition does not seek to judge dietary habits, but aims to equip individuals with the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions about their health.
Beyond focusing on food and nutrition, the exhibition also highlights the role of food providers.
A large Olympic wrestling ring model portrays the farmer as a wrestler, who combats various challenges to supply food to society. Additionally, the struggles faced by food delivery agents and meat and vegetable sellers are also focused upon.
The event running till July 2026 will also host workshops by scientists, chefs, and artists, to reimagine food in its many dimensions. These are designed specifically for the city's youth to understand the processes behind diets and food culture.

Mohali rehab centre packed, admn scouts for new facility
Mohali: With the district's sole government de-addiction centre in Sector 66 filled to capacity, Mohali administration has started searching for an additional facility to house drug addicts being brought in as part of the ongoing anti-drug drive in the state. Officials from the district administration recently inspected the civil hospital in Phase 6, where a ward on the fourth floor is being considered for conversion into a temporary de-addiction centre. Authorities said that if implemented, the ward would require heavy security arrangements — similar to a jail — to prevent inmates from escaping. The demand for additional accommodation grew over the past week after the 100-bed de-addiction centre in Sector 66 reported that it could no longer take in more patients. Earlier this year, its capacity was increased from 70 to 100 beds as part of the state government's intensified "War against drugs" campaign. Under this drive, police are arresting drug smugglers and detaining drug users, who are sent to de-addiction centres for treatment instead of prison. The Sector 66 facility has been operating under strict surveillance ever since an incident two months ago, when 24 inmates escaped after breaking a window during a storm-induced power outage. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Vitauthority Learn More Undo An FIR was lodged at the Phase-11 police station and the escapees were later re-arrested. Following the incident, permanent police deployment was sanctioned at the centre. Iron grills were fixed on windows and the number of security guards was increased, effectively turning the ward into a high-security barrack. Officials now fear that the proposed facility at the civil hospital may also require similar iron grills and continuous police presence if it has to house addicts brought in forcibly by the police. With the Sector 66 centre overflowing and inflow of patients rising steadily under the anti-drug campaign, officials say expansion of capacity is urgent. A final decision on shifting a ward in the civil hospital is expected soon after the submission of a security feasibility report. BOX: Drive against addiction intensifies Under the ongoing crackdown, suspected drug users are subjected to dope tests and, if found positive, booked under the NDPS Act. Instead of being sent to jail, they are admitted to the government de-addiction centre for medical rehabilitation and are released only after completing treatment. 2 more cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis in Kozhikode, Kerala health deparment on alert
Kozhikode: Three days after a nine-year-old girl from Thamarassery succumbed to amoebic meningoencephalitis, two more persons — including a three-month-old baby — have tested positive for the disease and are under treatment at Kozhikode govt medical college hospital. According to hospital authorities, the baby, hailing from Omassery in the district, was admitted on Aug 4, and the amoebic infection was confirmed in tests conducted in the college. Health authorities said it was the first time in the state that the infection was reported in a baby as young as three months. Superintendent of the institute of maternal and child health, Kozhikode medical college, Dr Arunpreet said the condition of the baby was critical. The samples have been sent to a virology lab in Chandigarh to identify the exact strain of amoeba. Health department sources said tests on water samples taken from the well at the infant's house confirmed the presence of amoeba, but further tests were needed to ascertain if the strain caused the disease. Kozhikode district medical officer Dr R Rajaram said people had been asked not to bathe infants in ponds. A 40-year-old man from Annassery in the district is also undergoing treatment for the disease at the hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Vitauthority Learn More Undo Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is mostly linked to bathing or swimming in waters containing the amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, which lives in warm and shallow bodies of freshwater, such as lakes and rivers. It is considered a free-living organism because it doesn't need a host to live. The infection occurs when the infected water goes into the nose, and the amoeba then moves to the brain, where it destroys the brain tissue. Anaya Sanoop, a Class IV student, succumbed to fever-related complications on Aug 14 night, and PAM infection was confirmed later.
