Uddhav-Raj Thackeray joint rally for Marathi, against Hindi imposition: Thackerays are brand in Maharashtra politics and their reunion could change scenario ahead of Mumbai polls
After years of discord, the Thackerays of Maharashtra — Uddhav and Raj — are set to hold a joint protest rally on July 6 to to protect Marathi and oppose what they call the forced imposition of Hindi in state schools, a claim the Devendra Fadnavis government has refuted.
Sanjay Raut, senior leader from the Uddhav Thackeray camp, made the announcement on social media, tagging Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Thackerays are a brand in Maharashtra politics and their unity could considerably change the scenario ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) or Mumbai civic elections at the end of the year. But is a reunion easy?

Unhappy with Uddhav being made in charge of the Shiv Sena by Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, Raj formed his Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in March 2006. The MNS showed promised winning 13 assembly seats in 2009, but the party's graph dropped, with the MNS scoring a duck in the assembly elections last year. Raj tried several political combinations over the past 10 years. The MNS chief's decision to contest solo in the 2024 assembly elections, too, backfired, as the party's vote share dropped from 6 per cent to 1 per cent. So much so that his son, Amit, too couldn't win his debut election. While his charm as a speaker remains intact, it doesn't translate into votes, say analysts.
Uddhav didn't have it easy either. After fighting his cousin, Raj, and falling out with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), an ally for decades, Uddhav managed to patch together an alliance with the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), called the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to become the CM in 2019. However, the Shiv Sena was split vertically by Eknath Shinde in 2022, leading to the fall of the MVA government. Shinde, who claimed to be the upholder of Thackeray legacy, then went on to become the CM, forming a government with the BJP. Shinde won the symbol, was legally called the Shiv Sena and even managed an impressive score in the 2024 assembly elections, joining the BJP government as a deputy CM, along with Ajit Pawar, the head of another split party, NCP. Uddhav, meanwhile, was forced to form Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) with the very few who didn't desert him.
The Sena UBT won 20 assembly seats, half of which were in Mumbai. The results showed that the party had limited presence in the rest of Maharashtra. On the other hand, Raj has been frequently meeting Shinde and Fadnavis.
Analysts say the two parties are facing an existential crisis and the two seem to be aware of it.
In a recent podcast with actor-director Mahesh Manjrekar, the MNS chief said that for the larger good of Maharashtra, he was willing to forget 'insignificant fights" with Uddhav. To this, Uddhav responded saying that he was willing to let go of their small differences if Raj was willing not to hobnob with Mahayuti leaders whom he considers 'anti-Maharashtra".
A reunion, if materialised, could actually help the two stay politically relevant in Maharashtra and their parties survive.

What does Uddhav-Raj Thackeray reunion mean for Maharashtra?
Balasaheb Thackeray had formed the Shiv Sena in 1966 on the plank of Hindutva, Marathi manoos and sons of the soil. Shinde left the party claiming that Uddhav-led Sena had compromised on the ideals. With Marathi in schools as an ideal issue, the ground is ripe for Thackerays to bring back the 'Marathi First' motto.
While the BJP is strong in its nationalist Hindutva ideas and is winning polls, the Marathi manoos idea has been sidelined, with only the MNS raising it in bits and spurts over shopkeepers not speaking the language or not using Marathi signboards.
Earlier this month, News18 had reported on a survey —Vote Vibe— which showed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continues to lead the race, but the Sena UBT is far from out, riding on a wave of emotional connect, legacy politics, and discontent against the current civic setup. Another trend observed in the survey was the emotional weight carried by the Thackeray surname. Uddhav's son Aaditya's consistent outreach and Uddhav's connect with the grassroots have kept their faction politically relevant.
Sena UBT, though weakened after the split, continues to draw support in Marathi heartland pockets where Thackeray's image looms large.
The survey also showed that legal battle aside, the Thackeray name remains attached with the Sena. Their reunion could spell trouble for Shinde, who, according to several reports, felt cornered after being made the deputy CM, that, too, along with Ajit Pawar. Shinde even met Raj, with murmurs that it was related to an alliance for the upcoming civic body polls in Maharashtra.
The reunion of the Thackerays could bring back the Marathi manoos agenda.

What does Uddhav-Raj Thackeray reunion mean for Mumbai?
The Shiv Sena has been ruling the BMC, the richest civic body in the country, since 1997. But with the Shinde rebellion and many ex-corporators leaving Uddhav, it would be tough to retain the prestigious civic body. Raj faces a similar situation in the Nashik Municipal Corporation which has been under his party since 2012. If the cousins come together, and Marathis vote for the alliance, there is a strong chance of Sena UBT retaining the BMC and possibly the MNS getting good traction in other civic bodies.
The idea of Uddhav and Raj joining hands got surprising support among voters, according to the survey. Many believe a united Thackeray front could re-energise the Shiv Sena brand and reclaim its central space in Mumbai politics. 'Mumbai belongs to Balasaheb. His family still speaks our language," said Vinay Pawar, a 38-year-old resident of Dadar.
The survey findings revealed a growing sense of dissatisfaction among Mumbaikars—not just with the prolonged absence of elected corporators, but also with the way administrators have run the show for over two years. Many citizens feel ignored, voiceless, and stuck with an inefficient civic structure. 'There's no one to hold accountable. The roads are broken, the drains are clogged, and nobody is answerable," said Rukmini Sharma, a schoolteacher from Kurla. 'We miss the days when we could approach our corporators directly."

At many places in Mumbai, like Goregaon in western suburbs and Girgaon in South Mumbai, supporters of the Thackerays had put a banner urging them to reunite for betterment of 'Marathi manoos'.
Will they? Sena UBT mouthpiece 'Saamana', while quoting Uddhav Thackeray with a picture of Uddhav-Raj from undivided Sena, had answered this question: 'What is there is in the heart of Marathi manoos, it will happen."

Assault on Constitution's soul: Opposition slams RSS' view on Preamble
Several opposition parties on Friday denounced RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale's call to review the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble, terming it a "deliberate assault" on the soul of the Constitution. The attack came a day after the RSS proposed reviewing the two words, saying they were included during the Emergency and were never part of the Constitution drafted by B R Ambedkar. While the Congress saw it as a "deliberate assault" on the soul of the Constitution and claimed the RSS-BJP had never accepted Ambedkar's Constitution, the CPI(M) said the demand exposes the RSS' long-standing objective of subverting it. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the mask of the RSS has come off again as they want 'Manusmriti'. "The Constitution irks them because it speaks of equality, secularism, and justice," he said in a post in Hindi on X. "The RSS-BJP doesn't want the Constitution; they want 'Manusmriti'. They aim to strip the marginalized and the poor of their rights and enslave them again. Snatching a powerful weapon like the Constitution from them is their real agenda," he alleged. "The RSS should stop dreaming... we will never let them succeed. Every patriotic Indian will defend the Constitution until their last breath," the former Congress chief asserted. CPI(M) leader and Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Hosabale's call is a "brazen attempt to dismantle the core ideals of our Republic". "Invoking the Emergency to discredit these principles is a deceitful move, especially when the RSS colluded with the Indira Gandhi government during that time for its own survival. To use that period now to undermine the Constitution reflects sheer hypocrisy and political opportunism. "Secularism and socialism are not additions; they define India. Every citizen who believes in democracy must raise their voice against this communal agenda," Vijayan said on X. The Left parties and RJD alleged that Hosabale's proposal was part of a conspiracy to change the Constitution. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the BJP/RSS attacked Ambedkar, Nehru, and others involved in the framing of the Constitution from November 30, 1949, onwards. "In the RSS' own words, the Constitution was not inspired by Manusmriti," he said in a post on X. "The RSS and the BJP have repeatedly given the call for a new Constitution. This was Mr (Narendra) Modi's campaign cry during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The people of India decisively rejected this cry. Yet the demands for changing the basic structure of the Constitution continue to be made by the RSS ecosystem," Ramesh said. Sharing the Supreme Court's November 25, 2024, judgment on the issue, he said, "Would it be asking too much to request him to take the trouble to read it?" In a post on X from its official handle, the Congress alleged the RSS-BJP's ideology stands in direct opposition to the Indian Constitution. "RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale has openly called for the removal of the words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble. This is not just a suggestion -- it is a deliberate assault on the soul of our Constitution," it said. "It is part of a long-standing conspiracy to dismantle Babasaheb Ambedkar's vision for a just, inclusive and democratic India -- something the RSS-BJP has always been plotting. Let us not forget: when the Constitution was adopted, the RSS rejected it. They didn't just oppose it, they burnt it." The Congress said the people saw through their agenda and gave them a resounding answer. "Now, they have returned to their old playbook. But let it be known: The Congress will stand as an unbreakable wall against any attempt to undermine the Constitution. Jai Samvidhan," it asserted. The party's deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari said, "Once again, the truth slipped out. The hidden agenda of the BJP and RSS is now out in the open. They want to remove the core values of secularism and socialism from the Constitution." RJD president Lalu Prasad, who claimed that social justice and communal harmony are his guiding principles, voiced his anguish on X by terming the RSS a "casteist" outfit. The RJD supremo also said, "They do not have the guts to cast an evil eye on the Constitution and reservations provided therein. Why are people with an unjust character so full of hatred for democracy and Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution?" Party MP Manoj Kumar Jha said, "Perhaps he (Hosabale) hasn't read it; I would advise him to seriously read the Constituent Assembly debates. Socialism and secularism were integral parts of our Constitution." In a statement, the CPI(M) Politburo said the inclusion of 'socialism' and 'secularism' in the Preamble is not an arbitrary addition and reflects the core values for which freedom fighters sacrificed their lives. "The Communist Party of India (Marxist) strongly denounces the proposal made by the RSS general secretary to remove the words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. This proposal exposes the RSS's long-standing objective of subverting the Constitution and its intent to transform India into a Hindu Rashtra, in pursuit of its Hindutva project." "It is the height of hypocrisy for the RSS, which played no role in the freedom movement, to now advocate for the removal of these foundational principles. That it cannot tolerate the values cherished by our martyrs betrays its reactionary, anti-people, and divisive ideology," the Left party said. It "firmly" opposed "any attempt to alter the core values enshrined in our Constitution. We appeal to the people to remain vigilant and resolutely resist all such efforts by the RSS and its protege BJP." CPI General Secretary D Raja said everyone knows what RSS wants. "Everyone knows it is opposed to constitution/why they spoke of '400-paar' and that is why defending constitution became the central issue for opposition parties." Hosabale, while addressing an event on the Emergency, said on Thursday that "the preamble of the Constitution Baba Saheb Ambedkar made never had these words." "During the Emergency, when fundamental rights were suspended, Parliament did not work, and judiciary became lame, then these words were added." The RSS leader said discussions were held on this issue later but no effort was made to remove them from the Preamble. "So whether they should remain in the Preamble should be considered," he had added. Union Minister Jitendra Singh, however, sought to defend Hosabale's call, saying any right-thinking citizen would endorse it because everybody knows that these words were not part of the original Constitution written by Ambedkar.

Kolkata college gangrape case: BJP, TMC trade barbs, accuse each other of shielding 'rapists'
Two days after a college student in Kolkata was allegedly raped by her two seniors and a former student of the educational institute, ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party trade barbs of words on Friday. With the Bharatiya Janata Party hitting out at the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led state government for failing to protect women in the state, TMC alleged that in BJP-ruled states, accused are shielded and sheltered. The TMC also mentioned that despite the West Bengal government bringing Aparajita Bill, the Bill lies ignored by the BJP-led Central Government. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari took to X and wrote, 'The empire of crime wasn't established just like that; it has grown and swelled in the company of various miscreants!!!' To this, TMC wrote on X, "While @BJP4India leaves NO STONE UNTURNED to SHIELD RAPISTS, AITC has consistently stood firm - condemning such heinous crimes, taking swift action, and demanding the strictest punishment. Lauded by all, the Aparajita Bill was introduced as a crucial step to ensure a stronger legal framework for women. But today, the Bill lies ignored, gathering dust with the BJP-led Central Government. BJP does not punish rapists, they protect them. Their mobile phones have been seized, and the victim's statement has been taken. She has named the accused... It has been taken seriously... Earlier, a law student was allegedly raped inside a South Calcutta Law College in West Bengal's Kolkata between 7.30 pm and 8.50 pm on June 25. The Kolkata Police have arrested three accused named – Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay. According to the victim, the incident took place on the evening of June 25 when the woman went to the college. She was reportedly taken by the three accused to a room inside the educational institute and gang-raped, the police said. During the probe, it was found out that the accused recorded the assault on a mobile phone and threatened to upload the footage online if she spoke to anyone about the incident, news agency PTI reported, citing a police source. 'She has alleged that the three accused had kept the mobile footage of the assault and threatened to release it on the internet if she talked to anybody about the incident,' the police source told PTI. Police added that the mobile phones of the three accused have been seized and sent for forensic analysis. Meanwhile, all three accused were presented before the additional chief judicial magistrate's court in Alipore, which sent them to police custody till July 1.
