They said dairy may cause 'gastrointestinal disturbance' that can disrupt sleep.
Study author Dr Tore Nielsen, from the University of Montreal, in Canada, said: 'Nightmares are worse for lactose-intolerant people who suffer severe gastrointestinal symptoms and whose sleep is disrupted.
'This makes sense because we know that other bodily sensations can affect dreaming. These findings imply that changing eating habits for people with food sensitivities could alleviate nightmares.
'They could also explain why people so often blame dairy for bad dreams. We're routinely asked whether food affects dreaming. Now we have some answers.'
Experts reckon digesting dairy can cause gut pain that plays havoc with the sleeping brain. Speaking previously, Dr Dennis Schmoltzi, CEO at Emma Sleep, said: 'Whether scientifically proven or just an old wives' tale, there's no doubt that Brits have identified a link between their cheese intake, and the strange visions that feature in their dreams.

Failing to diagnose and treat this condition risks creating a 'powder keg' of future ill health, according to the British Heart Foundation. Health experts have warned that around five million Brits living with an undiagnosed 'silent killer' condition are at risk of heart attacks and strokes. It is estimated that millions of people in the UK currently have high blood pressure, but aren't aware. ‌ Also known as hypertension, high blood pressure is a condition where the force of your blood against your artery walls is consistently too high. Over time this can cause damage to the blood vessels as well as organs. ‌ It is also a key contributing factor to many serious medical issues. However, it typically doesn't appear with any symptoms - earning it the nickname as a "silent killer". In an update provided by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) as many as 125,000 heart attacks and strokes could be prevented in the coming decade by finding and treating the millions of people with undiagnosed high blood pressure in the UK,. ‌ The charity warned that failing to do so risks creating a 'powder keg' of future ill health that threatens to 'devastate families' and pile 'unsustainable pressure' on the NHS. Around half of heart attacks and strokes are linked to high blood pressure condition, it said. The BHF said: 'Of the 16 million adults in the UK estimated to have high blood pressure, up to half are not receiving effective treatment, our latest estimates show. As many as five million are estimated to have undiagnosed high blood pressure.' ‌ It is now calling on the UK to 'reimagine how it prevents cardiovascular disease' through research and innovation. Professor Bryan Williams, chief scientific and medical officer at the BHF, said: 'Huge gains can be made by reimagining how we detect and treat common risk factors for cardiovascular disease such high blood pressure. "But at the moment, millions of people are still living undiagnosed with these conditions, which raise the risk of serious illness such as heart attack and stroke – this is a powder keg for the nation's future health, so making sure these people are identified and treated is critical. 'Such change is within our grasp – years of medical advances mean we have highly effective, evidence-based treatments to treat high blood pressure. This is one of the many tools we have to stop heart disease before it starts, but we must get more effective at identifying those at risk and treating them. ‌ "Moreover, we must change the way we approach disease prevention, making it more convenient to access and by using cutting edge science and technology to more precisely identify and effectively treat people at risk, so that serious illness is avoided in the first place.' What is considered to be high blood pressure? The only way to be sure if your blood pressure is too high is to get it tested. You can do this either with an at-home kit or by asking your GP or pharmacist. ‌ Blood pressure readings are given as two numbers, with the first number higher than the second (for example, 130/80). According to the NHS, if you're under 80 years of age, you're usually considered to have high blood pressure if your reading is either: 140/90 or higher when checked by a healthcare professional 135/85 or higher when checked at home ‌ If you're aged 80 or over, you're usually considered to have high blood pressure if your reading is either: 150/90 or higher when checked by a healthcare professional 145/85 or higher when checked at home To lower your blood pressure, the NHS recommends you: Have a healthy, balanced diet Exercise regularly – aim to do at least 150 minutes of exercise a week Lose weight if you're overweight Do not eat too much salt – avoid salty food or adding salt to your meals Do not drink too much alcohol – avoid drinking more than 14 alcohol units a week on a regular basis Do not drink too much caffeine – drinks high in caffeine include coffee, tea and cola Do not smoke If you're concerned about your blood pressure, you should speak to your GP.

Waitrose has issued a product recall over fears the item could be contaminated with salmonella. The supermarket is recalling its Waitrose and Partners Egg and Spinach Protein Pot with best before dates of July 31 and August 1. Waitrose has warned anyone who has purchased the product not to eat it, and says they should return it to their local branch for a refund. A statement by the Food Standards Agency said: 'Point of sale notices will be displayed in stores that are selling this product. 'These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product. 'If you have bought the product do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. 'For further information, please contact Waitrose Customer Care.' Waitrose says salmonella, a type of bacteria which can cause fevers, diarrhoea and stomach cramps, could be present in the affected product. More Trending The FSA warns that anyone experiencing these symptoms should stay away from work, school, or nursery until they stop having symptoms for at least 48 hours, to avoid passing it on to others. The supermarket apologised for any inconvenience caused and 'that it has been necessary to recall this product'. Eating one type of food linked to '41% higher cancer risk'

Scientists say restricting ultra processed foods (UPFs) - which include everything from sausages to fizzy drinks and sliced bread - could reduce cancer cases Eating more processed junk food has been linked to a 41% higher risk of cancer. ‌ An international research team tracked the health and diet of more than 100,000 Americans with an average age of 63 and looked at their chances of developing lung cancer. Over an average of 12 years 1,706 people developed the disease. People who consumed the highest amounts of Ultra Processed Foods (UPFs) were 41% more likely to develop lung cancer compared with those who consumed the least. The findings were adjusted to factor in whether or not people smoked tobacco. A quarter of cases occur in non-smokers. ‌ UPFs are food products that have undergone multiple industrial processes and contain ingredients not typically found in home cooking. Additives include preservatives, emulsifiers, artificial colours and flavours which are used to enhance taste, texture and prolong shelf life. ‌ The types of UPFs consumed most were processed meats like sausages and burgers as well as soft drinks. Author Dr Kanran Wang, of Chongqing University Cancer Hospital in China, said: "Although additional research in other populations and settings is warranted, these findings suggest the healthy benefits of limiting UPF. Limiting UPF intake globally could contribute to reducing the burden of lung cancer." Brits consume a greater proportion of UPFs than any nation apart from the US. Estimates suggest they make up more than half of the average UK citizen's diet. However most have no idea what this internationally recognised food category includes. Most supermarket sliced bread is a UPF as well as shop-bought sandwiches, wraps, pastries, instant noodles, crisps, formed ham, breakfast cereals, cheap yoghurts and ice cream. ‌ UPFs have unhealthy artificial additives to boost flavour and shelf life including emulsifiers, sweeteners, stabilising gums, flavour compounds and colouring agents. These are typically not used in home cooking but can be cheaper in mass produced food than natural ingredients. ‌ Previous research has suggested that people who eat more UPFs are 24% more likely to have a heart attack or stroke. Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the world. And in 2020 alone there were an estimated 2.2 million new cases and 1.8 million deaths from the disease worldwide. The latest study drew on data from the US Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trials. ‌ Researchers focused in particular on UPF that included sour cream, as well as cream cheese, ice cream, frozen yoghurt, fried foods, bread, baked goods, salted snacks, breakfast cereals, instant noodles, shop-bought soups and sauces, soft drinks, sweetened fruit drinks, hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza. The average study participant had just under three servings of UPFs each day. Consumption ranged from half a portion a day in those who ate the least, up to six servings a day in those consuming the most UPFs. The authors said that they did make adjustments to their findings based on whether or not people smoked but they did not make adjustments for smoking intensity, which may have an impact on findings. It is an observational study so they point out that "causality cannot be determined". The results are published in the journal Thorax. Commenting, Prof Sam Hare, consultant radiologist at the Royal Free London NHS Trust, said: 'A quarter of lung cancer cases occur in non-smokers so we do need research exploring whether other factors are associated with lung cancer. We also know immunity is linked to cancer biology so it is a good idea to do research into factors like diet. However further work is needed to establish direct causation between UPFs and lung cancer.' Tom Sanders, Professor of Nutrition at King's College London, said: 'Unhealthy diets often go hand in hand with smoking habit and low socioeconomic status. There appears to be no plausible mechanism to explain why ultra processed food should affect risk of lung cancer.'
