IND U-19 vs ENG U-19, 2nd Test: Rew, Ekansh steady England innings after Indian bowlers shine on Day 1

The Hindu7 days ago
India Under-19 bowlers struck at regular intervals before skipper Thomas Rew and Ekansh Singh rescued the hosts on day one of the second Youth Test here on Sunday.
Thanks to a 90-run stand between Rew and Ekansh, England U-19 recovered from 80 for five to close at 177 for six in 44 overs. Rew top-scored while RS Ambrish and Aditya Rawat claimed two wickets each.
India U-19 skipper Ayush Mhatre's decision to bowl first was immediately vindicated. Rawat trapped Ben Dawkins lbw with the first ball of the match, and in the next over, Henil Patel removed Adam Thomas, leaving England reeling at 4 for 2. One-down batter Aaryan Sawant managed to settle in with a boundary but struggled to build momentum.
Rain delayed the start and forced another interruption with England at 18 for two in 5.3 overs, prompting an early lunch.
Resuming play, Sawant and Rocky Flintoff attempted to rebuild, but Rawat struck again, dismissing Flintoff for a 26-ball 16, caught by Vihaan Malhotra, to make it 29 for three. Ambrish then removed Sawant (20), also caught by Malhotra.
Ben Mayes offered brief resistance with a 31 off 40 balls, laced with five boundaries, before falling to Ambrish.
Rew, captaining and keeping wicket in this match, then combined with Ekansh Singh (46 not out) for a vital 90-run partnership that steadied England U-19's innings. Their stand was broken late in the day when leg-spinner Naman Pushpak claimed the prized wicket of Rew.
Brief scores
England U-19: 177/6 in 44 overs (Thomas Rew 59; Aditya Rawat 2/42, RS Ambrish 2/39) vs India U-19.

Morne Morkel reportedly faces sack; BCCI unhappy with bowling and assistant coaches

Indian cricket team's poor performance in patches in the ongoing Test series against England has put bowling coach Morne Morkel and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate on the brink, with BCCI reportedly wanting to sack them after Asia Cup. read more Indian cricket team's memorable fightback and draw against England in the fourth Test at Manchester may not help bowling coach Morne Morkel and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate retain their jobs as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly decided to axe them. As per a report in the Telegraph, the BCCI is 'hell-bent on ringing in the changes' and will sack Morkel and ten Doeschate ahead of India's next Test series against the West Indies at home. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, the duo may continue with the team till the Asia Cup 2025, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), due to a lack of time to find their replacements. The Test record for India under head coach Gautam Gambhir and the new support staff has been disastrous, with eight defeats in 14 matches. However, Gambhir is set to get an extended rope as Test team coach, as BCCI doesn't want wholesale changes in a team that is under transition. Morkel faces sack; BCCI unhappy with bowling coach But BCCI's top brass feels that Morkel and ten Doeschate have 'failed to deliver in their respective positions,' especially in Test cricket. The latest case of debutant pacer Anshul Kamboj bowling at the speed of 120kmph in the fourth Test against England at Manchester seemingly confirmed Morkel's exit. Morkel has also been accused of failing to nurture a single talent since his time with Team India. The decision-makers in BCCI are also unhappy that Kuldeep Yadav has been consistently kept out of the playing XI despite Indian bowlers at times struggling to take wickets. 'The coaches always talk of balance, but keeping a world-class wrist spinner like Kuldeep Yadav out has had disastrous consequences," a source told the Telegraph. It's not just the support staff, the chief selector, Ajit Agarkar and East's representative Shiv Sundar Das are also under the scanner. Both Agarkar and Das are currently in England with Team India. As per the report, there's a disconnect between the Team India management and the players when it comes to a few selection calls. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Both Morkel and ten Doeschate joined Team India, along with former assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, last year after Gambhir became the new coach. Gambhir had worked with them in the past at Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises. Nayar was sacked earlier this year after India lost the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1.

Euro 2025: England beats Spain in a penalty shootout after 1-1 draw to retain title

Super subs England had fallen behind in the first half, fought back in the second and relied on its superb substitutes — including Kelly – just as it did against Italy and beating Sweden on penalties previously in the knockout rounds. "I actually can't believe it myself," Wiegman said. "How can this happen? But it happens. We're just going to party tonight." England leveled the score in the 57th on Alessia Russo's header from a cross by Kelly after Caldentey had given Spain the lead in the 25th finishing Ona Batlle's cross. Spain trailed for only four minutes in the entire tournament — and not for one second against England — yet could not seal its first European title against the team it beat in the World Cup final two years ago. "I think this team deserved more. At least not living with this bitter feeling," Spain coach Montse Tomé said in translated comments. Kelly had scored an extra-time winning goal for England at Wembley three years ago to beat Germany 2-1. Spain's missed chance In extra time Spain had good possession in the England penalty area so many times yet did not force a decisive goal. "It was cruel," Bonmatí told Spanish broadcaster La 1, after being named best player of the tournament. "We played better, created more scoring chances, but in soccer sometimes that's not enough." Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll saved spot kicks from England captain Leah Williamson and the first by Beth Mead. It was appropriate in England's memorable tournament that Mead's penalty had to be retaken under a new soccer rule that allows a second chance when a player scores by slipping and touching the ball twice. It did not matter after Hampton's saves.

After India's spirited fightback which saw them recovering from 0/2 with centuries from Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and an unbeaten 101* from Washington Sundar, emotions ran high on both sides. While the cricketing effort drew praise, it was a post-match moment involving Ben Stokes that lit up social media. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Multiple clips circulated online claimed the England captain refused to shake hands with Jadeja and Sundar, supposedly in response to the pair declining an early draw and continuing to bat through the final session. Video evidence posted on X clearly shows Stokes offering a handshake to Jadeja after the day's play. The interaction was brief, almost fleeting, as Stokes quickly moved past the Indian batters, but it did happen. So, did Ben Stokes snub a handshake? The answer is no. The 2-1 series scoreline in England's favour remains unchanged after the draw, but the emotional moments from the Old Trafford finish are likely to spill into the final Test at The Oval.
