UAE tourism sector eyes more growth as experts target untapped potential
The high occupancy levels pushed hotel revenues to reach nearly AED45 billion last year, posting a three per cent increase compared to 2023.
Industry officials and tourism experts, however, affirmed that the sector still holds vast untapped potential.
They emphasise that major projects — within tourism and across other sectors — are set to further stimulate tourism growth and boost the attractiveness of investment in the field.
Mohamed Al Rais, Honorary Chairman of Dubai Travel and Tour Agents Group (DTTAG), and Executive Director of Al Rais Travel and Shipping Agencies (Al Rais Group), said the UAE has witnessed numerous pioneering and exceptional projects in the tourism sector in recent years.
These developments, he said, have elevated the sector to a leading position in the region in terms of tourism experiences, and established the UAE as a global leader in various tourism-related fields.
Hosni Abdelhadi, CEO of Carlton Hotel and Suites UAE, said the strong momentum in the country's tourism sector reflects a clear leadership vision aimed at solidifying the UAE's position as a fully integrated global tourism and investment destination.
He also noted that the ongoing expansion of tourism and hospitality infrastructure projects is boosting investor confidence and opening new avenues for growth.
Sector experts said the UAE's tourism sector is witnessing a surge in investment opportunities across all areas – from infrastructure development to hotels, resorts, entertainment projects, and sustainable tourism initiatives aligned with the country's green economy goals.
The country ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 18 th globally in the Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2024 issued by the World Economic Forum.
According to global consultancy Arthur D. Little, the UAE has gone beyond building luxury hotels, successfully integrating hospitality with rich cultural and entertainment experiences.

Emiratis can renew UAE passports up to a year before they expire in travel rule update
Emiratis will be able to renew their passports up to a year before they expire from Monday. The extended period – up from the previous six months – was announced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). Most countries require visitors to have at least six months left on their passports to be allowed to travel. There are some exceptions, with New Zealand, Iceland, Sweden and Albania requiring three months. 'The move aims to improve citizens' quality of life by enabling them to plan overseas travel in advance, complete necessary procedures seamlessly and expand the use of digital official documents,' said ICP director Ali Al Shamsi. 'It is also part of the authority's strategy to provide proactive and innovative government services.' The UAE passport continues to rank among the world's most powerful and trusted travel documents, he added. It moved into the top 10 of the Henley Passport Index for the first time in 2024. The country was ranked ninth with visa-free access to 185 countries, an increase of 152 countries since the index began in 2006. 'The new order will further strengthen the UAE passport's global standing and set a benchmark for passport issuance and renewal systems worldwide,' he said. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai renewed 7,425 UAE passports during the first half of 2025. The centre has issued 139,000 passports for Emiratis since its inauguration in 2008.
