Valerie the dachshund reunited with owners after 540 days
The last time Georgia Gardner saw her miniature dachshund, Valerie, the dog cut a slight figure, barely 6in tall and weighing 8lb. Her pet's existence consisted of toys, treats and getting wrapped up in a little pink jumper with matching collar and lead when the weather turned cold. Then Valerie disappeared into the wilderness of an Australian island.
After 540 days of separation, Gardner has finally been reunited with her beloved pet, who is now 4lb heavier — a muscular and stocky dog who no longer fits into her pink harness.

When asked about the plot, Sweeney kept the details vague as she teased it is about 'how far a mother would go for their own child.' After the anchors pressed her for an Euphoria update, the performer assured fans their 'favorite version' of her beloved character Cassie was 'coming back.' Sweeney smiled as she reflected on the privilege of returning to her breakout role for season three. 'It's such a dream being able to play a very emotionally raw and chaotic character; it's so much fun,' the Fifty-Fifty Films co-founder said. Sweeney's latest appearance comes after recently breaking her silence on her split from Jonathan Davino. When asked by The Times if she was still planning a wedding, she confirmed she was no longer engaged. 'I'm learning a lot about myself, spending more time with my friends. And I'm loving it,' she said of the single life. She and Davino, 41, had been together since 2018 and got engaged in 2022. He was a producer on her successful romcom, Anyone But You, co-starring Glen Powell. She and the 36-year-old Texan had such chemistry in the film that many wandered if they were a couple at the time, especially since they decided to lean into the spark while promoting the movie. 'Glenn and I adore each other, so I think we were so happy for the reception of the film.' she said, seeming to shut down any idea of a love connection. 'When you spend so much time with someone, you become close and you talk to each other about anything. So work, life, family, friends, he's just there for me. I'm there for him.' For now, Sweeney is happy to share snuggles and go on outdoor activities with her dogs Sully Bear and Tank, work on restoring vintage cars, and create a real estate empire. Brighton's dog show is the highlight of my year

In what has become an annual event for us, my friends Ben, Janine, David and Nancy and I bring along a light picnic and a few drinks, and we sit down to watch Brighton's finest dogs, and their owners, compete for rosettes awarded for discipline, talent, self-control and generally being a good boy/girl. Some people and their dogs have been training for it all year. And some of them, one suspects, have not. The first few rounds are nothing special when compared to the final rounds. This might sound dismissive but, really, the last rounds are something else. I arrive at about one o'clock to watch the doggy triathlon. One of its tests involves jumping through a hoop. Very few dogs manage this smoothly, for the owners have to let go of the lead and this leaves the dogs baffled. I turn up just in time to see a bulldog grab hold of the hoop with its teeth and refuse to let go. Its owners, and a few stewards, chase it around the arena to try to prise the hoop from its jaws. This is what we are here for. The crowd goes wild. There are about 200 people here, I'd say, sitting around a roped-off area about 30 square metres in each direction. People are of all ages, and there is a Mr Whippy van, a French-crêpe vendor in an antique Citroën and numerous local businesses selling dog merch such as freshly baked dog treats from the Paws Bakery. Just behind us is a bratwurst van and the smells coming from it are driving me crazy, so God alone knows how the dogs are keeping it together. This is fitting, for one of our favourite rounds is coming up: Temptation Alley. In this, the dogs have to run, or pace, a gauntlet of tempting snacks on either side, and ignore them all, saving themselves up for a much nicer treat at the end. The rate of failure is fairly high, and I do not see how it could be otherwise. But first there is the Golden Oldies round, where dogs over seven years old are walked around the arena and expected to survive. They all do. I don't know who won, but it should have been the white, exhausted-looking dog who may have been a Dachshund once, and who measured the ground in slow, deliberate steps. 'That,' said David, 'is my spirit animal.' Ben sidles up to me and murmurs in my ear. 'Don't look now,' he says, 'but there's a man behind us who's been saying it's weird to turn up to a dog show without any dogs.' (We do not have dogs, but Ben used to look after a savage Pomeranian called, of course, Simon Le Pom. I do not have the space to tell the stories of his reign of terror.) 'Is it really that weird?' Ben continues. 'I mean, if we'd turned up to a school sports day without any kids, then, yes, that would be weird.' This, for reasons I am sure I do not have to explain, is a particularly controversial and hard-fought round. One year a dog was given a lion's mane and it looked magnificent, but did not win first prize. 'Fix!' we shouted. It struck me then that this would be fertile ground on which to run an illegal book. One would have to have more inside knowledge, of course, but I have a year until the next one. The dogs in their glad rags parade. 'There's a dog there that's dressed as another dog!' cries Ben, outraged. 'It's a panda,' says his wife, the unspoken words 'you berk' hanging in the air. Three days on, and Ben is still fuming about this. 'It's like they skinned a dog, and then made the other one wear its pelt.' (It didn't really look like that had happened. In fact, it looked rather cute, and definitely like a panda.) In the end it won. A red setter dressed as a belly-dancer came third, even though her dress had slipped off by the end. 'Doesn't have the hips,' says Janine. But the absolute highlight of the day is the sausage catching. In this, the owners throw their dogs a Morrisons cocktail sausage and their dogs have to catch it in mid air without stepping over the line. This is as much a test of the humans' ability to throw as it is of the dogs' ability to catch. More so, in fact. One feels for the dogs let down by their people, who themselves have had all year to train for this. One dog doesn't even stand up to take his sausage. The crowd goes delirious. But in the end, the prize goes to a chocolate Lab, who had also, amazingly, won Temptation Alley. To both ignore treats and catch them in mid air on the same day is a rare, once-in-a-generation skill set. I think of the great England all-rounders: Botham, Flintoff, Stokes. Look, this is the best of Britain. It is amateur, hilarious, and as wholesome as a sunny summer's day. I am going to pitch a documentary about this to Channel 4. Think of the Great British Bake-Off, but with dogs. And none of that Crufts business where, as Ben puts it, the judges lift their tails up and look at their arseholes. The Project stars are left utterly shocked as magician repeatedly reads their minds live on air: 'I feel sick!'
The stars of The Project were utterly dumbfounded when an illusionist repeatedly read their minds during Wednesday night's episode. Waleed Aly, Sam Taunton, Sarah Harris and Georgie Tunny were joined by Scottish magician Scott Silven, who tasked them with thinking of an object that would take them back to their childhood. They were then asked to name the age they experienced the object they were thinking of, or that was a significant year in their lives, and each age the hosts gave was written down. Silven asked Georgie to then reveal her memory - and she said it was of a lamington cake she had at her seventh birthday party. Throughout the trick, a gift box sat on the table, and when Silven opened it, the box contained a lamington, shocking the group. Sam was asked what object he had thought of, he said a lotto ticket - and Silven pulled one out of the centre of the cake. Silven did not reveal how he pulled the trick off, but the cast were absolutely shocked by the results. There was another show on the show when Peter Helliar was back on The Project on Tuesday night. The comedian, who sensationally quit the current affairs series in 2022, appeared alongside series regulars Waleed Aly, Sam Taunton, Sarah Harris and guest star Kate Langbroek. While fans of the show were happy to see Peter back behind the desk, he was just dropping by to promote his new children's book, Detective Galileo. Peter admitted he felt a little unusual sitting in a spot on the desk normally reserved for guests. Throughout the trick, a gift box sat on the table, and when Silven opened it, the box contained a lamington, shocking the group as Georgie Tunny admitted it was the item she had in mind Sam (right) was asked what object he had thought of, and he said a lotto ticket - Silven then pulled one out of the centre of the cake 'I used to be on this side of the desk, and then the last few times on that side, and now back on this side. I'm playing tennis with myself!' he joked. Peter explained that his three sons Liam, Oscar and Aiden 'are 22, 20 and 16' so no longer the target audience for his kid's books. 'I still sit at the edge of their bed and read to them' he joked. 'They are less interested to hear my ideas, but they love it and they are supportive. I try to get in touch with my own inner child rather than talk to my kids about it'. It's not the first time Peter has returned to the show since his departure. Last year, he appeared on the desk alongside Michael Hing, Max Rushden and Sarah Harris. The Project was rocked by two other high-profile exits in late 2022. Lisa Wilkinson announced she was quitting effective immediately, and long-time anchor Carrie confirmed her departure a month prior.
