Peshawar launches cochlear implant programme for hearing-impaired children

A formal cochlear implant programme has been launched at the Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) in Peshawar to support children born with hearing impairments, according to Express News. The initiative has been introduced by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government in collaboration with Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal.
The HMC's ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) team has already conducted nine successful cochlear implant surgeries as part of the pilot phase.
The procedures, which cater to children aged between six months and five years, are now being offered under the government's flagship Sehat Card (Health Card) programme, significantly easing the financial burden on families.
Each cochlear implant surgery costs approximately Rs2.15 million. This expense will now be covered through a combination of support from Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal and the Sehat Card initiative.
In a recent milestone, the ENT team, under the supervision of senior healthcare specialists, organised a two-day cochlear implant marathon at HMC, during which nine surgeries were successfully performed.
The hospital administration praised the collective efforts and dedication of the HMC ENT team, crediting their perseverance as a key driver behind the successful implementation of the programme.

Sale points: No complaint of livestock disease received: minister
LAHORE: Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq has said that no complaint of livestock disease or dengue has been received at any sale point so far. He expressed these views presiding over a meeting held on Friday to review the Eid cleanliness plan and arrangements for the sacrificial animal sale points. Special Secretary Local Government Asia Gul and Additional Secretary Ahmer Kaifi were also present. At the same time, CEOs of waste management companies and municipal chief officers from across Punjab participated through a video link. Punjab Cattle Marketing, Management and Development Company (PCMMDC) CEO Taseer Ahmed and CEOs of waste management companies gave a presentation on the arrangements. On this occasion, he demonstrated a resolve to provide outstanding cleanliness facilities on Eid-ul-Azha, stating that this year, more work will be done than last year to achieve the targets set by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. He further said that each waste management company will distribute eco-friendly waste bags for safe disposal of waste; a total of 11.698 million waste bags will be distributed across the province. It is estimated that 360,657 tons of waste will be collected during the three days of Eid, he added. According to him, currently 124,672 human resources are available under the Suthra Punjab programme; however, 15,204 additional recruitments have also been made temporarily for Eid. Currently, the number of equipment available in Punjab is 29,638, while an additional 125,794 equipment and machinery will be arranged for Eid. Moreover, 3870 primary collection centres and 4262 UC camps have been established in Punjab. Awareness camps have been activated in every city and union council where staff will be present. Moreover, he directed to setting up of control rooms in the offices of municipal committees, adding that each waste management company will monitor the cleaning operation from its control room; the central control room in Lahore will monitor the overall situation. 'In addition to the Shahpur Kanjran Model Cattle Market, five sale points are functioning in Lahore. In the remaining areas of the province, 28 markets of PCMMDC have been declared as sales points. In addition, 180 sales points have been established by the Punjab Local Government Department. Moreover, 84 cattle markets are active on their scheduled days every week,' he added. Dust storm, rain in upper parts predicted
LAHORE: The Met Office has predicted that moist currents are penetrating the north-eastern parts of the country and a westerly wave is also likely to approach upper parts on June 3. Under the influence of this weather system, dust storm/rain-thunder (isolated heavy falls/hailstorm) are expected in Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Mansehra, Battagram, Shangla, Kohistan and Abbottabad from June 2-5 with occasional gaps. Dust storm/rain-thunder (isolated heavy falls/hailstorm) are also expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mianwali, Sargodha, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Charsadda, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Kohat, Bannu, Karak and Waziristan on June 3 and 4 (evening/night) with occasional gaps. Dust storm is also expected in southern Punjab during the period. Meanwhile, rain-wind/thunderstorm is expected on Eid-Ul-Adha in Dir, Swat, Chitral, Kohistan and Mansehra from 07th (evening/night) to 09th June. So far as possible impacts are concerned, the Met Office has highlighted that windstorm/dust-thunderstorm/hailstorm/lightning may damage loose structures like electric poles, trees, vehicles and solar panels etc in upper/central parts including Islamabad. Farmers are advised to manage their crop activities keeping in view the weather conditions. General public, travellers and tourists are advised to take precautionary measures during the weather activity. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also advised all concerned authorities to remain 'ALERT' and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation.
