2025 PGA Championship preview: Rory McIlroy leads loaded field
Fresh off his Masters win, Rory McIlroy headlines a stacked field at the 2025 PGA Championship.
It's PGA Championship week and professional golf's second major of 2025 will once again feature a loaded field in pursuit of the Wannamaker Trophy.
First-round action begins Thursday at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, which also played host to the 2017 PGA Championship won by Justin Thomas. He was there earlier this week with most of the living PGA Championship winners from the past when defending champion Xander Schauffele hosted the event's annual champions' dinner.
The first PGA Championship was contested in 1916 and the tournament has been taking place every year since with pauses only for World War I and World War II. The winners list is a who's who from the sport's history, with legends of the game like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods and unlikely champions like John Daly and Shaun Micheel.
Here's a look at every previous PGA Championship winner ahead of the 2025 event:

How much money does 2025 U.S. Open winner get? What about the trophy?

How much money does 2025 U.S. Open winner get? What about the trophy? The 2025 U.S. Open begins Thursday at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, outside of Pittsburgh. For the 156 players in the field, there's plenty at stake at one of the USGA's anchor sites. There's a lot more that comes with winning at Oakmont than just a trophy. Here's everything the winner of the U.S. Open receives. U.S. Open winner prizes The U.S. Open winner receive a trophy engraved with the names of past winners, like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus among many others. They also receive a gold medal. As far as prize money, the 2025 purse has yet to be unveiled, but the number was $21.5 million in 2024, with Bryson DeChambeau taking home $4.3 million for winning at Pinehurst No. 2. The winner also receives an exemption into the U.S. Open for the next 10 years and gets a five-year exemption into the three other men's majors: The Masters, PGA Championship and Open Championship. For PGA Tour members, there's also an invitation to the next five Players Championships and the 2026 Sentry. Can't forget the massive amount of Official World Golf Rankings points that come with a win. And for PGA Tour members, 750 FedEx Cup points and a big boost to those trying to make the Ryder Cup team. Only three months until Bethpage Black.

2025 U.S. Open odds: Scottie Scheffler a clear favorite at Oakmont

The 2025 U.S. Open tees off on Thursday, June 12, at Oakmont Country Club just outside of Pittsburgh. As always, the U.S. Open is expected to be a grueling test, and there may be no course that emphasises that more than Oakmont. Considered one of the most challenging tracks on the circuit, Oakmont has hosted the U.S. Open nine times before, including the 2016 iteration of the tournament, which Dustin Johnson won at 4-under par. DJ was one of four players to finish under par in the field. In 2007, Angel Cabrera won the U.S. Open at Oakmont with a final score of 5-over par. The U.S. Open is always full of surprises, especially at a course like Oakmont, but that still hasn't stopped the oddsmakers from installing Scottie Scheffler as a resounding +280 favorite to lift the trophy. Scheffler is in absurd form, with three wins in his last four events, including at the 2025 PGA Championship last month. The 28-year-old has yet to win a U.S. Open, though he finished T2 in 2022. Defending champion and two-time winner Bryson DeChambeau is the second favorite at +700, making him the only other golfer in the single digits. Rory McIlroy, two months removed from his historic win at Augusta National, is 11/1 to win. Jon Rahm, who hasn't finished outside the top 10 at any LIV event this season, is right behind McIlroy at 12/1. Bryson DeChambeau is looking for his third U.S. Open title. Getty Images There's a decent jump after Rahm to Xander Schauffele (22/1) and Collin Morikawa (25/1). No other golfers are listed under 30/1 as of Monday afternoon. As is always the case at majors, there are some tempting prices out there on some of the biggest names in the sport. Brooks Koepka hasn't made much noise lately, but he'll certainly get some love as a 50/1 outsider. Shane Lowry, also 50/1, will get plenty of support given his ability to carve up tough tracks. Don't be surprised to see Ben Griffin attract some long-shot money at 75/1 after winning the Charles Schwab and then finishing second at the Memorial in his last two outings. 2025 U.S. Open odds Player Odds Scottie Scheffler +280 Bryson DeChambeau +700 Rory McIlroy 11/1 Jon Rahm 12/1 Xander Schauffele 22/1 Collin Morikawa 25/1 Ludvig Aberg 30/1 Joaquin Niemann 30/1 Tommy Fleetwood 40/1 Justin Thomas 40/1 Shane Lowry 50/1 Tyrrell Hatton 50/1 Patrick Cantlay 50/1 Brooks Koepka 50/1 Sepp Straka 50/1 Jordan Spieth 55/1 Viktor Hovland 55/1 Corey Conners 60/1 Hideki Matsuyama 65/1 Russell Henley 70/1 Ben Griffin 75/1 Sam Burns 75/1 Justin Rose 100/1 Harris English 100/1 Matthew Fitzpatrick 100/1 Keegan Bradley 100/1 Odds via FanDuel

Dustin Johnson returns to Oakmont, site of 2016 U.S. Open triumph, as game rounds into form

A lot has changed for Dustin Johnson since the last time he was at Oakmont Country Club nine years ago. He captured his second major title, winning the November Masters in 2020. He was one of the first players to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf in 2022, where he remains with one win in each of his first three seasons, though he hasn't collected a worldwide win since February 2024. Advertisement This week, the 40-year-old is back in Western Pennsylvania looking to rekindle the DJ of old's flame at the 2025 U.S. Open. He has missed the cut in five of his past seven majors and sits 27th in the LIV Golf season standings after eight events with three top-10 finishes on the year, including last week at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. But he remains far from his form in 2016, when he entered the final round at Oakmont trailing by four but won by three, claiming his first major championship title a year removed from a disappointing finish at Chambers Bay, when he had an eagle putt from 12 feet to win on the 72nd hole and walked off the green with a par to miss a playoff by one shot. "The course is just as hard as I remember, if not harder. Yeah, I like coming back here. I love the golf course," Johnson said Monday at his pre-tournament news conference. "First time I played it, probably two weeks prior to the 2016 Open, so obviously a lot of good memories from that year. Coming back, I was back here one other time when I got my honorary membership here, for that ceremony, which was really nice. Proud member of Oakmont. I'm probably their favorite member because I never come." Johnson calls Oakmont the toughest course he has ever played, and he couldn't name a second off the top of his head. Dustin Johnson walks to the eighth tee during a practice round for the U.S. Open golf tournament at Oakmont Country Club. Even with softer conditions expected this week thanks to upwards of 13 inches of rain in the past 10 weeks, and more expected early on and possibly on the weekend, it could make the golf course a bit easier to hold the fairways and greens, but it could lead to it playing longer, too. Advertisement That's how conditions were when Johnson won in 2016. "The conditions right now are similar," he said. "Hopefully it will be dry, we won't get any more rain, and it will dry out a little bit by Thursday." Johnson said his game has been trending in the right direction, even if the results don't show it. He's currently in the midst of one of his longest winless streaks (16 months) of his lengthy pro career. "Golf is a strange sport. I don't feel like I've slipped any. My scores haven't reflected, but it is a really fine line," Johnson said. "I remember a few years ago, I missed two cuts in a row. I think I shot 80-80, and then I won the next week. Dustin Johnson of the United States signs autographs for fans during a practice round prior to the 125th U.S. OPEN at Oakmont Country Club on June 09, 2025 in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. "For me it's always really close to being good, but just getting back there and keeping it consistent which over the last couple months I'm starting to see a lot of patterns and the game feels like it's coming back into good form." Advertisement Before he won at Oakmont in 2016, Johnson went 15 months between victories. A lot has changed in nine years, but the competitive fire remains inside DJ, and he's hoping some good vibes at Oakmont can be the spark to another special week. "I have confidence in this golf course because I know I played well, but obviously this week puts a lot of pressure on the driver. I feel like I'm driving the ball really good right now," he said. "Even from there, though, it doesn't get much easier. You definitely have to hit it in the fairway if you want a chance to win around here. "I'm looking forward to playing in it this week and hopefully can contend." This article originally appeared on Golfweek: U.S. Open 2025: LIV Golf's Dustin Johnson returns to Oakmont
